The controversies that grip our society and world make the study of politics more intriguing now than ever before. In response, over the last few years we have expanded our Department's focus, encompassing both the traditional examination of government structures and processes, as well as the broader politics influencing our society. Our objectives, which are consistent with the University's mission, are wide-ranging and ambitious. The Politics department offers the following minors/programs:
Minors: Criminal Justice Studies

We want our students to develop skills in critical thinking, modes of analysis and research that will last long after students have forgotten the details of our courses. We want to convey to our students a sense of civic responsibility. We want to provide student with opportunities for experiential learning outside the classroom. In the classroom, we want to expose students to both government and politics; that is, to formal institutions and processes and also the dynamics of the power and politics than run our system both inside and outside government structures. Consistent with the University's mission, we want our students to be concerned about issues of peace, economic development and human rights at home and abroad.

    Accessibility: the Politics of Design
    by Alan Herrell
A little over a year ago I wrote an article here on the upcoming U.S. Accessibility Regulations for the web. Specifically on Section 508 of the WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT OF 1998, which required all United States Federal Agencies with websites to make those sites accessible to individuals with disabilities, within 24 months of enacting of this law. The Regulations are finally out and the clock has started ticking again. "But I don’t work for the government," you cry! Probably true. But the impact of these regulations will extend far beyond the .gov domain. If you work for a University or other .edu that takes federal grants and have a website, surprise! It’s gonna be your day in the barrel too. One of the lesser known provisions of the The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the "effective communication rule." In a Letter Dated September 9, 1996, to Sen. Tom Harkin, Deval L. Patrick, Assistant Attorney General, Civil Rights Division had this to say

    Virginia Government and Virginia Politics
The organization chart of state government shows the structure of the three branches. The governor has authority to make numerous appointments , and the Virginia Supreme Court has the authority to rule on the constitutionalty of a law. When push comes to shove, however, the General Assembly is the center of political power in Virginia ... even though most residents of the state could not name their elected representatives to the House of Delegates or the State Senate. The General Assembly is the oldest elected representative body in the United States in continuous operation. It replaced the House of Burgesses in 1776 (12 years before the Federal Congress was first elected in 1788 after adoption of the Constitution).
The reconstructed House of Burgesses in Williamsburg is an incorrect architectural representation of the building's appearance in 1776, but still worth a visit. There, you can see the last page of the House of Burgesses' journal that someone wrote the final word concluding it's operation - Finis . That was done after colonial governor Lord Dunmore sought to block the rebellious House from continuing to meet. Members just adjourned to the local pub and created a new mechanism for representative government. There were 5 extralegal Virginia Conventions in 1775-76, before Virginia declared its independence and then adopted its first constitution, formally converting from a colony to a state and establishing the General Assembly as the replacement for the House of Burgesses and the Governor's Council.
