Print Preview of Section Ape , any of 13 species of large, highly intelligent primates , including chimpanzees gorillas gibbons , and orangutans . Apes are sometimes confused with monkeys , but unlike their smaller primate counterparts, apes do not have tails and their arms are usually longer than their legs. Apes live in tropical woodlands and forests of Africa and Asia. Despite sharing similar habitats, different ape species show striking differences in behaviors and ways of life. At one time, apes were classified as a single group of primates, but today most zoologists divide them into two distinct families: the lesser apes, or gibbons, and the great apes. Gibbons are similar to monkeys, with lithe, slender bodies and extremely agile movements. Gibbons spend all of their lives in trees, using their hands like hooks to swing arm-over-arm between branches. Known as brachiation, this method of locomotion is so fast that gibbons can easily overtake a person running on the forest floor.

The primates include the most familiar of the placental mammals , because they include us, Homo sapiens . Primates also include familiar animals, such as the chimpanzees, gorillas, and monkeys, as well as the somewhat less familiar lemurs, lorises, galagos, pottos, sifakas, indris, aye-ayes, and tarsiers. We're sorry that we don't yet have a proper exhibit on primates, but we've received so many requests for information that we have provided links below to some on-line resources on primates and paleoanthropology. The primates are typically thought of as acrobatic monkeys or impressive gorillas. However, the 181 species in the order Primata represent a very diverse group. The Dwarf bush baby weighs a mere 3.5 ounces, while the gorilla can weigh over 220 pounds. Almost all primates are located in the tropical band around the equator. The diet of the various primates is also diverse. Some eat primarily fruit, while others eat leaves or insects. Still others are omnivorous , meaning they eat both meat and plants.

    Willie B - Atlanta Zoo
Willie B was born in Africa in 1958. He is one of the oldest gorillas in captivity. Willie B lived in a cage without any contact with other gorillas for 27 years. In 1988 Atlanta Zoo opened the Ford African Rain Forest, a large natural habitat area for Willie B and other gorillas. Since then many other zoos have created better habitat areas for our animal friends. Sadly, Feb. 2000 Willie B. died ... it was an honor to have met you Willie B. You have taught the world a lot about the animal kingdom, and the need for natural habitats so your world can continue to grow and prosper... may we continue to learn.
