Western lowland gorillas ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla ) are a familiar species often exhibited in zoos. Yet because the animals are difficult to approach scientists know little about their lives in the wild. Even for an experienced primatologist, a first face-to-face encounter with a 400-pound (181-kilogram) gorilla can be a bit unnerving. "I generally work with primates all over the world," said Ultimate Explorer correspondent Mireya Mayor, who recently visited the World Wildlife Fund's Gorilla Habituation Project in the Dzanga-Sangha protected area. "It has never been as painstaking as this habituation process." "The first time I was charged by one of these gorillas, even though I knew that it was likely a bluff, it was terrifying," she explained. "I'd be lying if I didn't say that. They are letting you know who is the boss. But I already knew who was the boss; it was very clear from their sheer size and power."

Our Company representative will pick you from the airport and transfer you to your accommodation in Kampala. If your flight arrives in the morning you are advised to change money. To get to know Kampala, you can visit some exciting places with the help of your driver/guide. These may include: Kasubi Tombs, Namungongo Martyrs Shrine, museum and many others. Dinner and overnight at Speke Hotel Kampala. DAY 2: KAMPALA - BWINDI After early morning breakfast we depart to Bwindi, which is around an 8-hour journey. With a stop at the craft village at the equator for pictures and shopping, we continue to Mbarara for lunch and later proceed through the beautiful evergreen mountain country referred to as the "Little Switzerland of Uganda". Arrive Bwindi late evening for dinner and overnight at Lake Kitandara Luxury Tents or A&K Luxury Tents.
DAY 3: BWINDI - GORILLA TREKKING After early breakfast, with your packed lunch go for a briefing at 08:00 hours before beginning the trek. Gorilla tracking is unpredictable, so it is difficult to foresee how many hours you will hike. It may take 2-8 hours, and you should be prepared to walk a long distance in steep and muddy conditions, sometimes with rain overhead, before you encounter any gorillas.

CAMEROON: Primates die from anthrax, causing bush meat scare
The government of Cameroon has warned people against eating monkey meat after discovering that several chimpanzees and gorillas in a game reserve near the capital had died of anthrax. The warning was issued on Tuesday following medical tests on the bodies of two chimpanzees and two gorillas found dead in the Dja game reserve, 100 km southeast of Yaounde. "Analysis of samples taken from the dead animals indicates that the principal cause of their death is anthrax, a highly contagious disease to humans," the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife said in a statement on Tuesday. Law prohibits the killing of gorillas and chimpanzees, but the meat of both primates is a prized delicacy for many Cameroonians, who enjoy a wide variety of bush meat. This is the first time that anthrax, an acute and potentially fatal disease usually found in cattle, sheep and goats, has been detected in gorillas and chimpanzees in Cameroon. The government warned people living in and around the Dja reserve to avoid touching or consuming any monkey found dead. It also urged them to bury such animals without delay and to report their death to the authorities.

MOUNTAIN GORILLA
Remaining Population: Unknown Range: Africa
Gorillas are one of the most feared animals in the world, thanks to movies like King Kong and Congo . While it is true that they are large, powerful creatures, they are also gentle and affectionate. Mountain gorillas are easygoing vegetarians who lead a peaceful, playful life. Large males patiently allow young gorillas to climb all over them without a murmur of protest, and they are not aggressive toward humans unless they are threatened. As primates, humans and gorillas share a common ancestor. Humans did not evolve from gorillas; rather, humans and gorillas simply took separate evolutionary paths about 10 million years ago. We seem to have a special affinity for these animals despite our differences. As George Schaller, one of the world's leading gorilla researchers, has written: No one who looks into a gorilla's eyes intelligent, gentle, vulnerable can remain unchanged, for the gap between ape and human vanishes; we know that the gorilla still lives within us. Do gorillas also recognize this ancient connection?

Deeply impressed with the region and the gorillas, Akeley later led a success-ful campaign for the estab-lishment of a sanctuary for mountain gorillas. WHAT MAKES A PRIMATE HUMAN?
      • What are the implications of the shared characteristics between humans and the other primates? Why do anthropologists study the social behavior of monkeys and apes?
      • Information about primate behavior and ecology plays an integral role in the story of human evolution.
      • Humans are primates, and the first members of the human species were probably more similar to living nonhuman primates than to any other animals on earth. Thus, by studying living primates we can learn something about the lives of our ancestors. Humans are closely related to primates and similar to them in many ways. If we understand how evolution has shaped the behavior of animals so much like ourselves, we may have greater insights about the way evolution has shaped our own behavior and the behavior of our ancestors.

    Bwindi
The Bwindi-Impenetrable Great Ape Project (BIGAPE) was begun in 1996 in Bwindi-Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. The research project's central goal is a better understanding of the ecological relationship between the park's populations of mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii). The world population of mountain gorillas is currently estimated at 600, half of which live in the 331 square kilometers of Bwindi. The Bwindi chimpanzee population size is unknown but roughly estimated at 350-400. The nearby Virunga Volcanoes Conservation Area has a population of 300 mountain gorillas but no chimpanzees, making Bwindi the only forest in Africa in which these two apes occur together.
Bwindi is an African montane rainforest with exceptionally high levels of species endemism. The park is on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites due to its ecological uniqueness and natural beauty. Bwindi is home to a number of other primate species, including black-and-white colobus (Colobus guereza)
