Primate Printouts
Primates are an order of intelligent mammals. They have good eyesight, and many are arboreal (they live in trees). Most have grasping hands, flat nails (instead of claws), and a large brain. Primate mothers carry their young on their bodies until they are weaned; the ties between mother and baby are very strong.
There are about 200 species of primates, including monkeys, lemurs, chimps, humans, and others. Primates are divided into three groups:
  • Tree shrews
    • Tupaiidae: Tree shrews
  • Prosimians
    • Cheirogaleidae: Dwarf lemurs
    • Lemuridae: Large lemurs
    • Megaladapidae: Sportive lemurs
    • Indridae: Leaping lemurs
    • Daubentoniidae: Aye-Aye
    • Loridae: Lorises and galagos
    • Tarsiidae: Tarsiers
  • Anthropoids
    • Callitrichidae: Marmosets and tamarins
    • Cebidae: New World Monkeys (like the Howler monkey
    • Cercopithecidae: Old World monkeys (like the mandrill
    • Hylobatidae: Lesser Apes (Gibbons and siamangs)
    • Hominidae: Great Apes (like gorillas, chimps, and orangutans) and humans

Gorilla gorilla graueri
Looking for food (580 KB) Gorillas are the largest of the primates, weighing p to 400 pounds. They have a much heavier build than the chimpanzee, having more muscles, bigger canine teeth, and a much larger stature. The Eastern lowland gorilla has longer teeth, stronger jaws, and a broader body than the Western lowland gorilla. Gorillas walk on all fours, but use the knuckles on their hands instead of their palms. Eastern lowland gorillas have black coats, and the males develop silver backs as they mature. Gorillas are mostly folivorous . They never eat all the leaves from a single plant. Instead, they leave plenty of leaves so that the plant can replace the leaves quickly. The Eastern lowland gorilla is only found in the tropical forests of eastern Zaire, Africa.

editLink('skunkworks/.accounts/200310302254') 2005/09/18 16:57:12.091 GMT-4 By Phil Myers Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Order: Primates Family: Hominidae Members of this Family Until recently, most classifications included only humans in this family; other apes were put in the family Pongidae (from which the gibbons were sometimes separated as the Hylobatidae). The evidence linking humans to gorillas and chimps has grown dramatically in the past two decades, especially with increased use of molecular techniques. It now appears that chimps, gorillas, and humans form a clade of closely related species; orangutans are slightly less close phylogenetically, and gibbons are a more distant branch. Here we follow a classification reflecting those relationships. Chimps, gorillas, humans, and orangutans make up the family Hominidae; gibbons are separated as the closely related Hylobatidae. Thus constituted, the Hominidae includes 4 genera and 5 species. Its nonhuman members are restricted to equatorial Africa, Sumatra and Borneo. Hominid fossils date to the Miocene and are known from Africa and Asia.

In most of Africa the demand is growing for the meat of forest animals-this is known as "bushmeat". The "bushmeat" most in demand is that from Gorillas, Elephants and Chimpanzees. Thousands of hunters earn their living from slaughtering these animals. Some of the "notable" casualties have been the Gorillas Mushauuka, who was featured in the movie "Gorillas in The Mist" and Manheshe, who was featured on the Zaire 50E000 currency note. The Eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla graueri) is found only in eastern Congo. In 1998, before the most recent wave of killings, there were fewer than 17 000 of them left alive. The loss in elephant numbers has been even more dramatic in the Kahuzi-Biega park, with a total population of 320 in 1996 reduced to fewer than 20, and possibly as little as five.

Academy Main General Info Events Calendar Exhibits Aquarium Planetarium Natural History Research Education Publications Membership Support Volunteer Site Map Search Primates in Peril The Ebola virus has caused a massive die-off of gorillas and chimpanzees in central Africa. Because humans, chimps and gorillas share over 90% of their DNA, they also share the ability to contract the deadly Ebola virus. This disease, which was first recognized in Africa in 1976, causes death through massive blood loss in up to 90% of its hosts. Spread through bodily fluids, Ebola is particularly dangerous for highly social animals like primates. At the end of November, scientists working with the ECOFAC program in the Republic of Congo recorded the first Ebola-related gorilla deaths in the current outbreak. This month, they reported that 139 gorillas in the Lossi Gorilla Sanctuary have died or disappeared from their study area since December. Tissue samples from four of these gorillas, as well as from two chimpanzees, confirmed the presence of Ebola in all six cases. The epidemic appears to be spreading east toward Odzala National Park - home to the densest population of lowland gorillas in Africa. Meanwhile, Ebola has claimed over 50 human lives in nearby towns. Villagers likely contracted the disease initially by eating meat from infected primates. Local authorities are trying to teach people not to view primates as a food source - for their own sake, as well as for the sake of the endangered apes. Currently, there is no known cure for Ebola in humans or other primates.
