Comedown for Woods and Monty 11.32PM, Thu Aug 11 2005 Tiger Woods and Colin Montgomerie came crashing back down to earth at the US PGA after recent good form. Both golfers were on a high after finishing first and second in the Open last month. Montgomerie's euphoria dissolved in a sea of bogeys and double bogeys as he began the USPGA Championship at hot and humid Baltusrol with a seven-over-par 77. Woods was only two shots better than that and, in relation to par, that represented his worst-ever start to a major as a professional. The world number one has not yet given up hope of becoming the first player in golf history to win three majors in a season twice - and it ought to be remembered that he came from seven behind at the Masters in April after opening there with a 74. But he was already eight behind when he signed his card, both 2003 Open champion Ben Curtis and South African Trevor Immelman coming in with 67s and then Australian Stuart Appleby, Immelman's compatriot Rory Sabbatini and world number four Phil Mickelson joining them. Out on the course Swede Jesper Parnevik, given a special invitation to the event last month, was also three under with three to play, while England's Greg Owen, controversially denied a place in the Open, and last year's Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer were just one behind - Langer after closing with an eagle.

There was a time when Tiger Woods' appearance and subsequent assault on the PGA Tour was considered nothing but a boon to golf at every level. Golf's exposure soared, as did attendance, television ratings, participation and interest from a segment of the population long disenfranchised by the game's elitist tendencies.

Minea Blomqvist rewrites golf history at British Open
print this Minea Blomqvist , 19, finished eighth in the women's fourth major golf tournament of the year, the British Open, with a score of 278, ten under par. The winner of the tournament, England's Karen Stupples , finished at 19 under par.
The result is the best ever achieved by a Finn in a major tournament. The Espoo native, who is in her first season on the European Tour, also played her third round in 62 shots, the best ever result in a women's major and on the European Tour. The previous record was 63. Blomqvist posted two eagles, six birdies, and ten pars in a flawless round.
Blomqvist's task at the British Open was made significantly harder after a disastrous second day, when she carded a 6-over 78. She only barely made the cut for the last two days.
Blomqvist's professional career has begun favourably this year, and the Finn took her first European Tour victory in her last tournament before the British Open, in Hungary.

Palmer, Player, Nicklaus, Watson, Faldo and Woods. PRE 1400: THE ORIGINS OF THE GAME Throughout recorded history, every civilisation has played a game with a club and a ball. Pangea for example, as described by Roman scribes, would appear to be the father both of modern hockey and the Celtic games of Shinty and Hurling. In one form or another, the variant games of present day golf were clearly enjoyed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The game persisted over the centuries and the form that it took and rules that were applied varied as widely as the terrain the game was played over. In short, the game consisted of knocking a ball from one pre-designated place to another where the ball was to be struck off a predetermined object in the least number of blows. Games often extended from village to village.

Have a look at both our Gallery and
After the second hole at Royal Dornoch, you round a corner past a hedge and golfing heaven breaks loose. Holes are visible everywhere, the North Sea frames the right, mountains are ahead and hills lie to your left. You'll see people walking their dogs, cycling or wandering along a path up above. In late April and May the banks of whins are a carpet of yellow. Although it's a private course, Dornoch sits on public land, meaning that visitors are welcome.
The fairways are inviting as they ramble this way and that, and golfers may feel encouraged to take a big swing and still stay on course. But simply hitting the fairway is rarely enough. It's no good, for instance, to hit the right side of the fairway on "Foxy," the par-four, 445-yard 14th hole, because the green isn't visible from there. It's hidden behind a sand hill that cuts into the fairway. Better to drive down the left side, then try to contrive a shot that finds the green, which is set on a precipice at nearly 90 degrees to the fairway.

An Abbreviated History of Disc Golf
1 million B.C.E. to Present Day
The Discoblus TOP OF THE PAGE
Disc golf in one form or another has been with us since the beginning of time. The early cavemen in their search for weapons to extend their ability to slay food probably found rocks before clubs. If they could kill something from a safe distance it would be much safer than a club or a sharp stick.
Test of skill where a necessary pastime, closest to the target sounds familiar! Flat rocks had a different flight and flew further than round objects, skipping flat stones on the water, throwing shields, Eureka! Then came the discus that Discoblus threw which certainly resembled a Frisbee. BACK TO THE TOP OF THE PAGE In the early steel age sharpened rings where thrown with devastating effect. They flew with accuracy, caused serious injury and looked like the modern Aerobie. Then came the ancient word "scaling" (to throw a thin flat object), so that it's edge cuts through the air. Pie pans, film can lids and toy flying saucers where the recent predecessors of the modern Frisbee which was invented in 1964 by Ed Headrick, US Patent 3,359,678. He also formed the International Frisbee Association which had over 112,000 members by 1972.
