It started out as a stick drawing in the dirt of the Pemberton Valley flood plain along Airport Road. Just nine lines were drawn. Then the loggers and local contractors, and folks in the Village of Pemberton, who wanted to be able to play golf in their own neighbourhood and not have to drive all the way down to Whistler, went to work.
The l40-acre parcel of Crown Land was purchased by the Society for $160,000 and handed over to the Village. The Club leases the land back from the Village. Through the efforts of a dedicated group of Villagers, the Pemberton/Whistler area added another course to the Whistler Golf Club. In 1991, noted course architect Boyd Barr was brought in to redesign the drawings, and in 1994 the full l8-hole course opened for play. It is a remarkable piece of property.
The course is located on a flat floodplain. The greens and tees were built a meter and a half above the flood line to avoid water on the course. Barr utilized the design elements of mounding, contours and doglegs to create a challenging variety of holes. As the course winds its way through the valley in the shadow of Mount Currie, 12 lakes and ponds along with the Pemberton and Lillooet Rivers combine to provide a fine test of golf.

In the mid 1970's, one hundred and fifty acres of the Park were converted into a golf course, but with the expansive layout and such wonderful views it became far more popular than expected and by the 1990's it started to deteriorate. An action plan was devised with Gaunt and Marnoch, Golf Architects commissioned to design not only a new 18-hole course but also an Academy which would provide the best facilities for budding golfers of all ages. Professional Sportsturf Design led by John Hacker were appointed as Project Consultants and work began in 1998. In 2001, the Ryder Cup captain, Sam Torrance, visited the partially completed course and was amazed at the facilities being developed - especially the Academy, where 100 local school children were receiving tuition. The entire facility was officially opened on 27th September, 2002, and is now welcoming players of all abilities to experience the challenges of the 18-hole, to receive tuition in the Academy, or to enjoy the 9-hole, and then retire to the 19th in the Stables Golf and Visitor Centre.

Okanagan Golf News Thompson Okanagan Regional Golf History By Michael Riste / BC Golf Museum Jun 4, 2005, 12:51 Email this article Printer friendly page When Dr. Carruthers relocated his practice to Kelowna in 1899, he knew the health benefits golf provided for his patients. To remedy the deficiency in his new home, Carruthers called the locals together to form the Kelowna GC. Unfortunately when the Doctor moved his practice to Revelstoke in 1903, the game died. The Clerk of the Weather was distinctly unkind to the City Fathers and guests who braved the elements to officially open the Kamloops GC on the 4th of May, 1914. “ Watch me I’ll show the experts something beyond reach” His Worship blamed the climatic conditions for his “wiff” on his first attempt to strike the ball. His 2nd attempt opened the course. Following Vernon and Kamloops, the Kelowna GC was reconstituted on the 30th of April, 1914. Under Lionel Taylor’s guidance and foresight the 2700-yard course, with natural undulations and excellent natural hazards, interspersed with challenging bunkers for any novice, officially opened in September 1914 on the Bankhead Orchard property.
