The mission of NiblickGolf.com is to provide information on the rich traditions and heritage of the game of golf. We want to look at the foundations of the game by examining both the early courses and the golf pioneers who built them. By studying the past, we can often improve on the present and prepare for the future. NiblickGolf.com offers several avenues for you to explore: GOLF IN HEAVEN? - Is this possible? If it is, surely it would be like playing golf on the linksland of the British Isles and Ireland … on courses warmed by the sun and cooled by ocean breezes. Courses where you can taste the salt in the wind that blows in off the Firth of Clyde or the Irish Sea. Courses where you might be faced with a blind shot over a grassy dune more than once in a round … a shot that Horace Hutchinson described in 1895 in The Badminton Library: Golf . “The holes were for the most part, out of sight when one took the iron in hand for the approach; for they lay in deep dells among these sandhills, and you lofted over the intervening mountain of sand, and there was all the fascinating excitement, as you climbed to the top of it, of seeing how near to the hole your ball may have happened to roll.” I was fortunate to make my first trip to Ireland and Scotland in 1989, which was not a happy summer for the links. A severe drought had parched the fairways and greens, providing tons of yardage for drives but making it difficult to stop the ball on the green. Carnoustie was almost not playable and many players asked for their money back at that famous old course. I took seven putts on the first two greens: wind moved the ball back and forth on the cement-like putting surface, giving one the illusion that he had too much to drink the night before. It was a far cry then from the championship status it enjoys today. I played lots of the big ones - Prestwick, Turnberry, Gleneagles, the Old Course, Muirfield, Gullane, Gleneagles, Portmarnock, Royal Dublin, and County Louth. I had the pleasure of playing with members at most of these courses, helping to make the round so much more memorable. I was hooked.

May, the founder of the company, played a major role in popularizing the game of golf. In the 1940s and 1950s he was the preeminent golf promoter in the world, staging a number of annual tournaments at his country club, Tam O'Shanter, located in Niles, Ill. While George S. May was a golfer, he became more interested in the business behind the game, not just the playing of the game. Mr. May became known for his keen business insights, promotional flair, innovative ideas and vision for the future of golf. Among his honors is the fact that George S. May is listed as one of Golf magazine's 100 Heroes of American Golf. The book "Chicago Golf: The First 100 Years" by Tom Govedarica includes a chapter entitled: The George S. May Decade: 1951-1960. Mr. May was inducted into the Illinois Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) Hall of Fame on October 9, 1992. Tiger Woods aims to carve out another slice of golf history this week as he hunts his third major victory of the year at the US PGA Championship on a course that could not set up better for him. Damp conditions have made the par-70, 7,392-yard classic layout at Baltusrol Golf Club, which finishes with a pair of par-fives, play even longer with soft fairways that favour prodigious, high-ball hitters like Woods. "I can see why a lot of people love this place, because it's fair," the US Masters and British Open champion told a news conference on Wednesday. "I mean it's one of the old-school golf courses where it's just right in front of you," he added of a heavily bunkered A.W. Tillinghast design that offers no extreme slopes on fairways or greens. "There are no hidden tricks. There are no elephant burial grounds that we have to play now on some of the golf courses. It's just right in front of you."

RSS Washington has a richer golf heritage than many folks realize. Here are some assorted historical facts and some bits of information about the game in the Evergreen State: The first U.S. Women's Open was held at the Spokane Country Club in 1946 and the winner was Patty Berg. The PGA Championship , one of golf's four "majors," has been held in Washington twice. In 1944, it was held at the Manito Country Club in Spokane and Bob Hamilton upset Byron Nelson 1-up in the match-play final. The tournament returned to Washington in 1998 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish and Vijay Singh won with a four-round total of 271. Jack Westland of Everett won the 1952 U.S. Amateur at the Seattle Golf Club and used the victory as a launching pad for a successful campaign for the U.S. Congress.

Golf returned as an intercollegiate sport at Haverford after a decade-and-a-half absence when Tim Harvey organized a club during his freshman year of 1998-99. Harvey and classmate Dan Steinhagen both competed in every fall and spring season from Spring 1999 until their graduation in 2002, except for their respective junior semesters abroad at The University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In the spring of 2003, the Fords were granted the opportunity to compete in the Centennial Conference Championships - against varsity teams from the other member institutions of the conference.
