What is the origin of the word 'golf?'

How did the terms 'birdie' and 'eagle' come into golf?
...
Where does the word 'mulligan' come from?

What is the origin of the word 'golf?' top The word 'golf' is not an acronym for anything.  Rather, it derives linguistically from the Dutch word 'kolf' or 'kolve,' meaning quite simply 'club.'  In the Scottish dialect of the late 14th or early 15th century, the Dutch term became 'goff' or 'gouff,' and only later in the 16th century 'golf.' The linguistic connections between the Dutch and Scottish terms are but one reflection of what was a very active trade industry between the Dutch ports and the ports on the east coast of Scotland from the 14th through 17th centuries. Some scholars suggest that the Dutch game of 'kolf,' played with a stick and ball on frozen canals in the wintertime, was brought by the Dutch sailors to the east coast of Scotland, where it was transferred on to the public linkslands and eventually became the game we know today.

USGA To Expand Museum And Create "Arnold Palmer Center For Golf History"
March 19, 2005
Far Hills, N.J. – The United States Golf Association plans to renovate and expand its museum and archives facility in Bernards Township, N.J., to feature a new golf history center named in honor of three-time USGA champion Arnold Palmer, who has served as the national chairman of the Association's Members Program since its inception in 1975. Scheduled to open in 2008, the "Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History" will consist of a 22,000-square-foot addition to the existing museum building. It will house championship collections and showcase the 13 national championship trophies. The current museum building, to which the Palmer Center will be connected, will close for renovations at the end of March 2005. "I am thrilled to be forever associated with the USGA, an organization I have held dear for nearly all of my life," said Palmer, who was the first to win a U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open and a U.S. Senior Open. "I am honored and humbled, and I feel like I've just won the U.S. Open again." "I can't think of a more fitting tribute to the man who has meant so much to the game of golf," said Fred Ridley, USGA President. "His play, conduct and influence have reflected the positive aspects of this game for a generation. He has done it all with a gracious manner that has made him the game's most eloquent diplomat. We want Arnold Palmer to know that this organization and its more than 700,000 Members nationwide will always be Arnie's Army."

Many say that if St. Andrews was the true home of golf, than it lives and breathes at Pinehurst. No other place in America carries a more storied golf past, from Ben Hogan's first professional career win to Payne Stewarts unforgettable putt at the 1999 U.S. Open. Here's where the stories begin to unfold.
    • Pinehurst's first golf course, a nine-hole, primitive set of links, is laid out by Dr. D. LeRoy Culver, an amateur designer. When the first Pinehurst clubhouse is completed, it contains dressing rooms for both ladies and gentlemen, reflecting the interest in golf by both sexes. English pro and world champion Harry Vardon plays an exhibition match on the resort's 18-hole course, bolstering Pinehurst's reputation among a growing number of golf enthusiasts. Scottish-born golf pro Donald Ross comes to Pinehurst in December for what will be a 48-year stay.

Scottish Golf History and Famous Golf Course Architects
Despite the game's subsequent growth and worldwide popularity, it did not have such an easy beginning. Originally the game of "gowf", as it was called by the Scots (the English referred to it as "goff", the Dutch, "koff"), was forbidden on Sundays by Act of Parliament, nevertheless, golf continued to flourish at an astonishing rate. The game was born on the linksland of Scotland's east coast, the Kingdom of Fife, and five hundred years later is still going strong. Through the passage of time there have been countless names etched into the fascinating history of the game, yet none more prominent than the men who designed the world's greatest golf courses, such as James Braid, Donald Ross, Old Tom Morris and Dr Alistair MacKenzie. Before they turned to design and construction some of them were the leading golfers of their time (mainly Braid and Morris), yet many golf historians believe they left a more distinctive mark in golf courtesy of the land they touched, as opposed to the silverware.

In less than three decades La Manga Club has become one of Europe's most prestigious golf destinations. Like almost all successful projects, this initiative was the brainchild of an almost legendary personality in the area, Gregory Peters. This American "magnate" arrived in this part of Spain in the mid 1960's, at the same time as the early development of La Manga strip. Impressed by the enormous possibilities of the Mar Menor and aware of its huge potential as a tourist attraction, he started to participate in a number of investments, purchasing several properties. His experience and knowledge of the world's finest golf resorts in the United States, and especially California, meant that a much bigger project soon began to hatch in his mind: the first golf course in the area as a high level tourist attraction. In the initial project, Gregory Peters and his partners intended to build a 9-hole golf course and a small residential development, for which, on February 1970, they purchased a 500-acre land, located in a valley some ten kilometres from La Manga. It was the perfect place to play golf, with over 3000 hours of sun a year and an average temperature of 17°. The project was received with considerable excitement, so much so that the owners of the adjoining properties wanted to participate and gave up their land in exchange for a shareholding in the real estate company created to promote the development. As a result, the initial project, involving the construction of a 9-hole course and a small urbanisation, became the construction of two golf courses and the development as a whole grew to 1400 acres called "La Manga Golf Course" which, years later, would become "La Manga Club" as we know it now.
