'Freemasons invent Golf Club' - Reuters Wm St Clair Hon Company Clubhouse Burgess foundation date Knuckle Club ... Rosslyn Chapel Several authorities cite the ‘secrecy’ of the Freemasons for the ‘absence’ of early Scottish golf history records, particularly of the Royal Burgess , but t his statement needs clarification and certainly there is no evidence Freemasons destroyed golfing records The main reason that the members of early golf clubs were Freemasons was because virtually all middle class men of ability in Scotland in the century after 1717 were Freemasons from senior law officers to skilled artisans as well as poets and writers. ( Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott were masons This was apparently because, from 1717, the Scottish 'stonemason' Freemasons, called Operative Masons, began to allow merchants and professional people, termed Speculative Masons, to join Lodges or create their own. This practice spread elsewhere in the world. For example, in France Voltaire and Napoleon were Mason s as were the luminaries of the American Revolution such as George Washington who was buried with full Masonic honours.

Here is a brief write up about the history of the game of golf. The origin of the game of golf has never been clearly established. The Romans during the reign of Caesar played a game resembling golf by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped branches. Book illustrations show the Dutch playing a similar game on their frozen canals about the 15th century. Cross-country variations were popular in France and Belgium. In 1457 golf was banned in Scotland because it interfered with the practice of archery, which was vital to the defense effort. Nevertheless the Scots continued to brave the opposition of both Parliament and church by playing the game on seaside courses called links. Scotland is the home of the world's oldest golf course, St. Andrews, which was used as early as the 16th century.

Restoring antique golf clubs
One of my passions in recent years has been collecting antique golf clubs. One of the problems I've faced has been restoring clubs that have been neglected for decades. The question you have to answer is, how far do you go in restoring an antique golf club? To clarify my own thinking, I wrote this piece
Valuing hickory shaft golf clubs
Since I posted the previous article, I've been asked by several readers about how to value old golf clubs. It's not an easy job and there are few real experts, but I've put together some information that might be useful.
Golf history in Australia
Golf has been played in Australia since the 1830s, but the first golf professional and club maker recorded here was Richard Taylor in 1891. So clubs with Australian markings date from that year. Living in Australia, I've come across many hickory shaft golf clubs associated with the early Australian golf professionals. Many clubs have the professional's name impressed on their head or shaft. This gives us a way of dating the club, provided we know something about the man. It turns out to be quite a difficult job. Working with collector and dealer Leon Rowbell in Melbourne, I've put together a list of golf professionals in Australia between 1891 and 1941. So far as I know, this is the only list of its kind.

The History of the Golf Club
As a result of people finding my other Web pages on antique golf clubs, I've had several requests for information on the history of the golf club. There are a number of books on golf history, (see below ), but many of these are hard to find. Some of the good sources are out of print. So I felt there would be some interest in a short piece on golf clubs and their history. This isn't a definitive history, and certainly not an academic treatise. It provides an outline of the subject, some thoughts of my own, and a list of books that you can try to track down. [When I wrote this piece in February 1998, there was practically nothing on the Web about golf history. Searching on the phrases "golf history" or "golf antiques" in the major search engines will now turn up a number of useful Web links: many more than it did a year or so ago. DN, June 1999]
History of the Game
Golf's origins are lost in history, but in its present form it is generally agreed to have been played in Scotland near St Andrews in the late 1400s. A lot has been said about fanciful links to a game played on frozen ponds in Holland earlier, but I think the connection with Golf is too tenuous to be credible. Golf as we know it was first recorded in Scotland in the region around Edinburgh in the 15th Century. It became quite notorious then, and was even banned for a while by the King of Scotland, as golfers had become so obsessed with the game that they neglected their archery practice. (Not much has changed.)

Hotelling's New Book Documents Pebble Beach Golf Links History
By David R. Holland Senior Regional Staff Writer PEBBLE BEACH, CA - Neal Hotelling's first panoramic view of Carmel Beach, with Pebble Beach Golf Links to his right, was of a surfing competition. "I saw this white-sand beach, bikinis and bongos," Hotelling said. "I said good-bye to snow of Michigan." It was 1985 and for a boy from Grand Rapids, Michigan, he must have been in heaven. He had already married a California girl and three months later he was living here. Almost 15 years later, Hotelling is now an author. His new book, a combination history and coffee-table pictorial, is entitled: "Pebble Beach Golf Links". It is "The Official History" because the Pebble Beach Company sanctioned it. Joann Dost provided the recent photos.

The Evolution Of The Golf Ball™ highlights major changes in the game of golf and depicts important golf landmarks. The development of the golf club, the golf course, and the rules of the game all were affected by this evolution.
Golf, as we know it, was first played with a leather-covered ball stuffed with goose or chicken feathers. Several pieces of stout leather were tightly stitched, leaving a small opening. The casing was turned inside out. Feathers - a "gentleman’s top hat full" by measure - that had been boiled and softened, were tediously stuffed into the casing before the final stitches were made. The surprisingly hard feather ball was hammered into roundness and finally coated with several layers of "paint". Because of the difficulty and time involved in making Featheries, they were relatively expensive. This fragile missile was used for almost four centuries. The first "Gutta" ball is believed to have been made in 1848 by the Rev. Dr. Robert Adams Paterson from gutta-percha packing material. Gutta-percha is the evaporated milky juice or latex produced from a tree most commonly found in Malaysia. It is hard and non-brittle and becomes soft and impressible at the temperature of boiling water. Gutta balls, were handmade by rolling the softened material on a board. The new durability of the Gutta, together with its much lower cost, resistance to water, and improved run, provided rejuvenation to the game of golf. Not without some resistance from traditionalists, the Gutta gradually replaced the Feathery.

A History of Golf since 1497
The Birth Of Golf
Golf as we know it today originated from a game played on the eastern coast of Scotland in the Kingdom of Fife during the 15th century. Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club.
Some historians believe that Kolven from Holland and Chole from Belgium influenced the game. The latter was introduced into Scotland in 1421. However while these games and countless others are stick and ball games, they are missing that vital ingredient that is unique to golf - the hole. Whatever the argument, there can be no dispute that Scotland gave birth to the game we know as golf today.
During the mid-15th century, Scotland was preparing to defend itself against an English invasion. The population's enthusiastic pursuit of golf and soccer to the neglect of military training (archery primarily) caused the Scottish parliament of King James II to ban both sports in 1457. The ban was reaffirmed in 1470 and 1491 although people largely ignored it. Only in 1502 with the Treaty of Glasgow was the ban lifted with King James IV (James 1 of England) himself taking up the sport.
Golf's status and popularity quickly spread throughout the 16th century due to it's royal endorsement. King Charles I popularised the game in England and Mary Queen of Scots, who was French, introduced the game to France while she studied there. Indeed the term 'caddie stems from the name given to her helpers who were the French Military, known in french as cadets.
