Chiropractic and Golf
A Therapeutic Treatment and Prevention Program
by Jeffry Blanchard,DC, with Leonard Finkel This is the first in a 12-part series concentrating on the assessment and treatment of golfers and golf-specific injuries. Each installment will focus on a different physical problem, its causes and treatment. In the U.S. there are almost 30 million golfers, and every one of them a potential chiropractic patient. Because of the unilateral movement in the golf swing, virtually every golfer at some point experiences some form of injury or pain: some chronic, and others acute. There are three fundamental causes of golf injuries: poor posture, lack of flexibility and poor swing mechanics. The root cause of poor mechanics is often a result of a physical restriction or mechanical dysfunction, which may be alleviated through chiropractic procedures. Lack of flexibility can also be addressed by treatment and a prescribed stretching program specifically designed around each patient's restrictions. Obviously, chiropractic care is ideally suited to deal with poor posture.

Sport Specific Spring Training Routines To Help Your Golf Game
by Lisa A. Leonard
Certified Fitness Professional

Improving your performance on the links starts now while your local course is still covered in snow. Before long the season will be upon you and without preseason conditioning, your handicap won't be much better than last year.
Tiger Woods' climb to the top of the profession has astounded the golf world. While you will never see him go toe to toe against a heavily conditioned football player, his hours in the gym have definitely paid off.
While cardiovascular endurance isn't necessary in the game of golf like it is in long distance marathon running, walking 18 holes can be a challenge. If you sat around all winter consuming copious amounts of comfort food and getting little or no physical activity, your first few trips to the course will be exhausting. 20-30 minutes of cardio training 3 times per week between now and golf season will give you a significant edge on your competition.
Some cardio options that can be done to prepare your body for the rigors of your sport are treadmill walking and elliptical training. Both modalities work the large muscles of the body and will improve heart and lung function.

The Shanks by Rick F. Ever since my last golf lesson, I seem to have developed an awful case of the "shanks."
To those of you who are not familiar with them, the "shanks" occur when one strikes the ball where the clubhead meets the hosel. With the ball contacting the curved area between the club head and hosel, the result is a shot that shoots immediately right, scaring the living shit out of any playing partners stupid enough to stand to the right, ten yards forward of a right handed hacker like myself.
To anyone who has seen the golf movie Tin Cup , the main character, Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy , caught the shanks just as he was about to compete in the US Open. Just one day out of the blue, he hits one off the hosel. Not worried about one silly shot, he hits another, then another off the hosel, and no matter what he tried, or how hard he tried, he just couldn't shake them. He questioned everything he had ever learned about the swing, looking for an answer, any answer for the dreaded shanks.
Mine showed up a week after possibly my best golf lesson ever. Hitting a solid and powerful high draw for my instructor, I was anxious to got out and use what I had learned. Unfortunately, it has rained literally everyday for the past 2-3 weeks making practice or playing more than difficult. After a week, rain or no rain, I was going to be "that" dumbass, hitting golf balls in a light but cold steady rain.

"How to Develop More Consistency in the Golf Swing" By Sean Cochran Author Bio Publish This Article The majority of us are aware that golf is a game that requires consistent shot making to be successful (and have fun). If we are hooking, slicing, and hitting our wedges fat, it can really start to get frustrating. Consistency is key to hitting a low score and enjoying the game. So how do we get there? First, let us do a little review of the golf swing. To hit the ball squarely on the center of the club head you must take the club through the proper swing path. A proper swing path will allow the club to align itself correctly with the ball to hit the shot you are trying to hit. For more advanced players this could be in the form of a draw, fade, cut, or some other variation. Higher handicappers will be happy with just plain old straight shots. Anyway, this process begins with your address, moves through your take away, into the back swing, onto the transition between back swing and down swing, into contact, and finishes with the follow through.
