Bios on Past Internal Speakers Cedric W. Dempsey NCAA President Cedric Dempsey became the NCAA's third executive director January 1, 1994 (his title was changed to president April 22, 1998). As president, Dr. Dempsey oversees a staff of 350 and provides leadership in the governance structure for the more than 1,200 colleges, universities, conferences and affiliated organizations that comprise the Association. Prior to joining the NCAA in 1994, Dr. Dempsey was director of athletics at several universities, including the University of Arizona, the University of Houston, San Diego State University and University of the Pacific(California). Prior to serving in these positions, Dr. Dempsey was assistant director of health, physical education, recreation and athletics; assistant basketball coach and professor at Arizona.
