How to Find Your Gold Rush Relative: Sources on the Klondike and Alaska gold rushes, 1896-1914
Compiled by R. Bruce Parham, May 1997 (Updated April 2001)
National Archives and Records Administration-Pacific Alaska Region
Anchorage, Alaska Presented by The Alaska Gold Rush Centennial Task Force This guide is intended to provide a basic list of Alaska and Yukon genealogical resources for individuals who were in the north during the Klondike and Alaska Gold Rushes (1896-1914). While not comprehensive, the information includes promising and up-to-date sources with others that may be obscure and un-indexed. This guide includes:
  • major Alaska repositories major Yukon repositories repositories outside Alaska and Yukon genealogical societies ... newspaper indexes and guides

  • Many of the repositories have guides to their archival, manuscript, and photograph collections and specific finding aids to their Gold Rush materials. The list of active genealogical societies includes information on how to hire individuals or groups to do research. The Internet has become a valuable genealogical research tool and, as such, addresses for sites particularly in Alaska and Yukon are included. The sources listed are at the larger Alaska or Yukon libraries; some items may be borrowed on interlibrary loan through your local public library.

Friday June 6, 2003 Oakland historian probes Jews of West: Sleuthing unearths Gold Rush treasures DAN PINE
Bulletin Staff Ava Kahn swears she's not hallucinating when she wanders the streets of San Francisco. "I'm not completely nuts," she laughs, "but I know what used to be here. When I walk down Sutter, I picture the original Temple Emanu-El from the 1860s." Kahn can be forgiven for her time-warped visions of antiquity. As an expert on the history of Jews in the West, she knows the territory well. Her newly published magnum opus, "Jewish Voices of the California Gold Rush," only reinforced her long-standing affection. The book was a true labor of love for the Oakland-based teacher and historian. And it was labor. Kahn spent 13 years poring through and editing rare documents, many of which had gathered dust for decades. That indelible last shot from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," depicting a cavernous warehouse full of crated and forgotten museum objects, is not far removed from reality, she says. Her sleuthing took her from the Western Jewish History Center at the Judah L. Magnes Museum in Berkeley, where she works as a research associate, to the American Jewish Historical Society in New York, to the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati.

The Club Pacific Gold Rush Ramblers was found in 1996 as a chapter of the American Motors Corporation Rambler Club. Our purpose is to encourage the use, restoration, and preservation of automobiles built by American Motors Corporation from 1957 through 1969. Although our focus is the cars made during these years, our club is open to anyone with an interest in the cars and trucks built by American Motors Corporation. About us We publish The Gold Standard bi-monthly. It is one of the many benefits that our members receive. Our dues are a modest $25/year. We encourage our members to join AMCRC for $24/year as well. The Pacific Gold Rush Ramblers holds meetings bi-monthly. We meet at various sites in and around the area between San Francisco Bay and the Gold Country in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Each meeting has a theme of interest to the members. We have met at the Jelly Belly Factory, the Behring Auto Museum, the Towe Ford Museum, the Gold Bug Mine, taken a drive tour to Mt. Diablo State Park, and the Pacific Western Railroad Museum.

We have it all with our one and two day California river trips, private riverside camping, modern bathhouse and much more. We have a wide variety of river trips to please our river guests. Gold Rush Whitewater Rafting has been operating on the South Fork of the American River for the last 26 years with permit #2 issued by El Dorado County. The South Fork is 21 miles in length, with many whitewater rapids, that our trained river guides will take you through. We raft the South Fork of the American River, which is a class III River, for beginner and experienced white water rafters on half day, full day, and two-day river trips. Net specials start at just $65 per person. We also raft the Middle Fork of the American River (class IV) on a 1-day river trip. Many feel that the excitement of discovering gold pales compared to the excitement of the whitewater action available on the American River today! As a Class IV run, the Middle Fork offers a great combination of water ranging from gentle flows to challenging and technical whitewater. Our river trips meet at our private riverside camp in Coloma, California, which is 2 hours from San Francisco and 45 minutes from Sacramento. For Middle Fork trips, we meet in our camp on the South Fork or with special circumstances we can meet in Auburn at Foresthill road. Our guides are vastly experienced and have been with our company for years. Even the owner has 18 years of whitewater guiding experience to add to the leadership of the best staff around. You might even be surprised to find him guiding your trip! But be forewarned…. he doesn't mind a little "swim" occasionally. The love of whitewater rafting by ALL the employees of Gold Rush is what makes our staff so unique and fun to be with, completing the experience.

    "Golden Dreams and Silver Linings"
A History of Mining in Idaho
In the Fall of 1860, a party of ten prospectors led by Captain E.D. Pierce entered the Nez Perce Reservation in search of mineral wealth. After a month of frustration, one of the men, Wilbur Bassett, found what he'd been looking for. Gold! Bassett's discovery along Canal Gulch was far more significant than the Pierce party could have ever imagined. It was destined to set off one of the largest migrations in American history, and it would change forever this part of the country that would become known as Idaho. Mining became Idaho's first industry. Even today, more than 140 years after the discovery of gold, mining remains a keystone of the Idaho economy. Mining in Idaho has shaped the state's political boundaries, built cities, and supplied the nation with minerals necessary for today's modern lifestyle which many of us take for granted. The history of mining in Idaho is as colorful as the metal that first drew thousands of fortune seekers to the Gem State. It's a history of golden dreams and silver linings. Six months after Wilbur Bassett's discovery of gold, 1600 claims had been staked along Canal Gulch, and Pierce City was growing by hundreds of fortune seekers a day. They came from Sacramento, San Francisco, and Vancouver. Their migration up the Columbia and Snake Rivers caused Idaho to be one of only two states to be settled west to east.

North Georgia s gold rush, America s first. North Georgia s gold rush Few with an interest in the gold rush, Georgia history, or the Cherokee Removal.
    http://ngeorgia.com/history/goldrush.html
Few words in the English language create the fervor that the cry of "Gold" does in man. A driving force in the colonization of America, gold was the primary reason for Hernando De Soto to visit the North Georgia region in the early 1540's. Indians along the Chattahoochee River north of Atlanta routinely panned for gold and found significant amounts of the material. Spanish miners joined them and formed minor settlements that operated almost continuously until the early 1700's. Much has been written as to who discovered gold in Georgia and when. Mines operated illegally in Cherokee Territory for years, but the first contemporary reference to a gold mining operation in the state points to present-day White County (then Habersham County) in 1829. By then at least two mines had been constructed in the Nacoochee Valley and there are indications are they were in operation in late 1828. Most modern historians and the state of Georgia discount the story of Benjamin Parks discovering gold at Licklog ( Dahlonega After the Spanish were forced from Georgia, interest in gold died for a number of years, but mining continued off and on throughout 18th century and into the 19th century. As early as 1819 there is evidence that gold was being mined by whites near the Cherokee town of Sixes. Although people knew of the gold, Frank Logan "discovered" it in

Antoine Janis is believed to have been the first Euro-American settler in Larimer County. Janis was born in Missouri to French parents and his father freighted supplies from St. Louis to Wyoming during the heyday of the fur trade. In the waning days of that era, Janis again passed through the Cache la Poudre Valley. Charmed by its beauty, he staked out a squatter's claim west of the present site of Laporte in 1844. Janis reported that when he claimed the area, "the streams were all very high and the valley black with buffalo...and I thought the Poudre valley was the loveliest spot on earth...." Janis marked his property in the event that settlement came to the area, but did not erect a residence at that time.
