Negro Rights Activities in Gold Rush California By RUDOLPH M. LAPP Long before the Civil War free Negroes were active in movements to improve the position of their people in American society. Recent events of this kind are actually a continuum of earlier, lesser known efforts. The nineteenth century free Negro also had his detractors and his supporters. His struggles were marked by some successes and many defeats. Little has been written of the leadership he developed, the campaigns he conducted, and the frustrations he endured. While the greatest part of this story is set in the eastern states of the North, the Gold Rush brought a chapter of it to California The Negro population of Gold Rush California was not large. They comprised roughly 1 percent of the population. The significance of their story is not in their number but rather in the moral force that the Negroes were able to exert and the courage they displayed. Above all, the account of Negro organization and their struggles against often insurmountable odds testifies to the inaccuracy of the belief that the American Negro did little on his own behalf.

What was the Gold Rush?
Where was the Gold Rush?
There have been many gold rushes in the history of the United States. The two most famous are the 1849 in California and the Klondike Stampede in the the late 1890s in Alaska and the Yukon Territory of Canada. The gold rush that affected Valdez and the Prince William Sound Region was the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897. It began when the ships Excelsior and Portland reached their "lower 48" ports in July 1897, laden with gold. The stories spread like wildfire and people rushed to find riches beyond imagination. An All American route to the gold fields was desired. Valdez and a route over the Valdez Glacier were marketed by steamship companies as the "All American" route to the Klondike. Thus began Valdez's history as a transportation hub for interior Alaska. Unfortunately for many, by the time they reached the Klondike all the claims had been staked and they were forced to look elsewhere. Others decided not to attempt the arduous journey from the coast to the Interior and elected to find their fortunes closer to their ports of entry. This is the way many of the gold and copper mines in the Prince William Sound Region were found. Once a miner landed in Valdez, they had to pack their 1500 pounds of gear to the foot of Valdez Glacier to begin their ascent. The Glacier rose approximately 4,800 feet and it was a twenty mile hike to the top. Miners were victims of storms, avalanches, crevasses; all which claimed some of the intrepid souls. Provisions had to be packed up the Glacier in stages. The miners had arrived in Valdez only to find their trips had only really just begun. Some chose not to go further and either stayed in the Prince William Sound Region or returned home.

A Unit Study of the Gold Rush Era
Talk about exciting potential in a unit study. The activities that I've gathered for this unit study can make for an activity packed, very hands-on, fun time. Even if you live in New England or Florida, which are both at opposite ends of the country from the Gold Rush area, you can still have a dynamic unit study on this time period. This can be both a mini-unit to be used with a study of the Wild West or it can be a stand-alone study.
A component that I have not gone into in great depth that could be added is studying the impact of the immigrant on the Gold Rush. There were large numbers of Chinese and Spanish who participated in the gold rush as well as European immigrants who travelled from the East Coast of the US seeking the great American Dream.
Other extensions to this study could be the study of: Californian history, trails west, Native Americans, and the geology of the west.
GENERAL RESOURCES:
Teacher Created Materials (www.teachercreated.com) has several selections in their thematic units series that would work with this unit study. Each book comes with a sample lesson plan that will help you use the book in your own unit study.

Deller used his honorarium to buy a beat-up Jeep (in which he scoured the back roads) and five acres of land ($2,000 at auction) in the beleaguered nine-church, one-bar town of Trona, California, staking a presumably enduring claim on the West Coast. There's no ocean view, however; Deller's homestead is a barren slice of the Mojave Desert. Continue article Advertisement
Inspired in part by the lucid muckraking spirit of Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, Deller's guidebook points out revealing landmarks and minor tourist attractionsa mini-museum devoted to burlesque, for examplethat have deep, sometimes insidious cultural meanings (like the seemingly ubiquitous correctional facilities along the highway) and, as it happens, house individuals who carry the torch of some vanishing belief system. On his trips, Deller got out of the car and met folksformer Black Panthers, aging strippers, political exiles. "I listened to these characters for hours, drinking it in," he enthused in a conversation about the project. "You forget a landscape, but you don't forget the people."

  • The tunes here were not all written by Americans, but are songs that were known in America. Most songs of the Colonial and Revoltionary Era were songs that originated in England, Scotland and Ireland and immigrated with their people.
  • These dates are, of course, not perfect. I have struggled to put them in APPROXIMATE/BEST GUESS date order. If you have an educated correction, please let me know. A few tunes are listed more than once to make clear they were popular in several eras.

Gold Rush Grub The first food history of its kind, Gold Rush Grub presents a panoramic view of an exciting period in American history. The grub that stampeders ate was affected by everything from arctic weather to Pacific Coast agriculture and Midwest meat packing. For those who struck it rich, there were oysters, ice cream, and cognac. The less fortunate had to make due with beans and nettle soup. Readers with an adventurous palate can experiment with recipes for scalloped grayling and caribou scrapple. Those who prefer to leave the porcupines and bears in peace will enjoy the engaging prose and historic photographs. Gold Rush Grub will appeal to general readers, cookbook aficionados, and anyone who loves a good meal and a great story. Pocock, Jan Goldstein, Mary Sheriff, Peter Fenves, and Jon Mee These seven essays treat the ways that "enthusiasm" was defined in the discourses of philosophy, physiology, psychology, politics, and aesthetics in Germany, France, and England. In all of these disciplines, "enthusiasm" was connected with dangerous states of transport, especially by proponents of the key Enlightenment value, reason (which had an energetic following of its own, sometimes referred to as a "cult of Reason"). But important eighteenth-century thinkers rehabilitated enthusiasm in order to explain the power and importance of artistic inspiration. The papers were originally given as a seminar held at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, UCLA, in 1996.

By Steve Wiegand
Bee Staff Writer
Published Jan. 18, 1998 COLOMA If you are a Californian, part of you was born here. Perhaps it's the adventurous part, or the inventive; the inquisitive or the acquisitive. If you are a Californian, part of you knows this serene valley, cut by a branch of the American River, where oak gives way to pine and the foothills bow to the Sierra. Because this is where California was born. Its father was James Marshall, a dour, paranoid carpenter from New Jersey. Its mother was the natural happenstance of geological and hydrological forces that placed a pea-shaped dollop of gold in a sawmill ditch here on the chilly morning of Jan. 24, 1848. "Boys," Marshall told the group of laborers who were helping him build the sawmill, "By God, I believe I have found a gold mine." What he had really found was the ignition switch for one of the most massive migrations in human history: the California Gold Rush. It was quite literally a rush. More than 90,000 people made their way to California in the two years following Marshall's discovery, and more than 300,000 by 1854 or one of about every 90 people then living in the United States. The stampede of humanity ripped families apart and stripped towns of a large percentage of their young men. It changed the country's view of the relationship between wealth and labor. And it ensured that California would always be a different kind of place in America.

It's a trend, observers say, that is percolating in other cash-strapped states. Fulfilling a campaign promise to push the state's 104 Indian tribes to pay their "fair share" of state government revenue, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been renegotiating federally mandated compacts with several tribes, most of whom currently pay nothing to the state.
