ANIMAL WELFARE
AWI staff. Animal Welfare Institute's Standards for Pigs, Cattle and Sheep . Animal Welfare Institute, Washington, DC, 2002-2005.
FULL-TEXT
AWI's criteria require that husbandry, housing and diet allow the animals to behave naturally. AWI requires that farms accommodate the animals' needs. Animals must be able to perform behaviors essential to their physiological and psychological health and well-being. AWI will only endorse independent family farms that own their animals, depend upon the farm for a livelihood and participate in the daily physical labor of caring for the animals and operating the farm.

1. INTRODUCTION
Biotechnology is a rapidly developing area of science that has made a great impact on human lives in one way or another. Its broadest definition encompasses activities of many scientific fields, and has brought about a revolution in the understanding of biological systems and their interactions with the environment at a molecular level. In the production line, creating organs for transplant, animals and plants as pharmaceutical factories, production of edible vaccines at low risk to the recipient and high nutrient containing food items are becoming demand value driven industries. Thus, the speed of the technology’s development has sparked a great debate among the advocates and those who oppose it. Today, around the world, this technology is contributing to the understanding and advancements in the fields of medicine, agriculture and the environment. The momentous achievements within the past decade have brought in newer challenges propelling the goals of the discipline even further. Thus, the impacts of biotechnology are multifaceted, and a wealth of information has been generated within the last few decades. The outcomes of activities of biotechnology benefit developed and developing countries alike. However, there is a vast gap in knowledge and skills between the two categories with respect to research and development. Thus, it is important to develop programmes that enhance the knowledge and skills of the potential researchers in our own country as the positive aspects could be manipulated to suite a country’s national needs.

    Abstract
Balík, J., Veverka, J., Kyseláková, M.: Evaluation of reverse osmosis for modification the content of alcohol and volatile acids in wine. Acta univ. agric. et silvic. Mendel. Brun. (Brno), 2000, XLVIII, No. 3, pp.: 7–11
Reverse osmosis offers ranging technological improvements in wine technology. The concentration of grape must or separation of select wine components can result in meaningful qualitative change of treated wine . The aim of the work was to evaluate the efficiencies of polyamide ACF 99 membrane (PCI Membrane Systems Ltd.) in the separation of alcohol and volatile acids from wine. The wine variety Veltlinské zelené by alcoholic strength 11,58 % was used for observation of alcohol separation with or without cooling wine samples. Separation of volatile acids was applied for wine variety Ryzlink vlašský in two variations: sample with the content of volatile acids 0,34 g. l and vinegar wine. During reverse osmosis there have been measured physical and chemical parameters of retentate and permeate. Under conditions cooling the content of alcohol in treated wine increased to 13,59 % and without using cooling was final alcoholic strength 11,75 %. In vinegar wine increased concentration of volatile acids from 5,82 g. l
