How to Teach Your Children About Goal Setting
As parents we want our children to have a clear sense of purpose, to be motivated and self-assured, to know the importance of helping others, and to understand that they are at the controls of their life.
According to John Bishop of GoalSettingForStudents.com, "We want our children to know how to step up to the plate and take ownership of their education and their life. Teaching our children the goal setting principles will help them take ownership of their future."
As parents we understand that when our children take ownership they will embrace our efforts, and those of other concerned adults, to help them succeed. The key is having an effective plan to discuss these important life skills with them. Your talk about goal setting should be organized and well thought out. You should have several discussions over a couple of months before they start to fully understand and implement these valuable life-lessons.
First, give your child something to read about one aspect of goal setting. Discuss with them what they learned by using open-ended questions. Facilitate the discussion rather than lecturing to them. Let them express their thoughts. This is your opportunity to learn what they are thinking. Guard against your biases and praise and congratulate your child.

Goal Setting:
Making Dreams Come True
Teach your child to turn dreams into reality with the practical magic of goal setting. Goal setting is the process of making a dream come true step-by-step. The desire to meet a challenge and succeed has been a part of many cultures throughout history. The ancient Peruvians used to draw out their goals in symbols and paint them in primitive colors on the walls of caves. The Egyptians used to create elaborate rituals to move from the state of desire to actualization. They believed that writing out a dream in advance would assure a positive outcome. Here are a few simple steps to follow to help your child set goals successfully.
Seven Principles for Setting Goals
1. Listen First: Encourage your child to become quiet and listen to the wisdom within before setting a goal. Many goals are born out of competition or excessive striving, rather than from one's own integrity. A healthy and solid goal follows listening to one's inner wisdom, rather than the reverse. Go over these vital questions before setting goals:

The Dangers of Goal-Setting
By Paul Bauer
(Why Goal Setting can be hazardous to your health)
People ask me often, "Paul, is goal setting the best way to get what I want in life"?
There are many methods that you can use to create a happy and fulfilling life. Over the years, "experts" have popped up that have been extolling the virtues of "go for your goals!" Well... there's a small problem that has popped up for many people...
The Addiction To Goal Setting
People have become addicted to "getting more" because the "go for your goals" hype has gotten them dis -connected from who they really are
Examples:
Well intentioned business owners have set their goals to grow their business and forgotten their own families
Aspiring writers have set their goals to become "best sellers" and forgotten the passion of why they wanted to write in the first place.
Politicians have set goals to become famous and powerful... and forgotten the very people who voted them into office There's an old Hopi Indian phrase called Koyaanisqatsi . Koyaanisqatsi means life out of balance . When we get to attached to "wanting" something, (like most goal setting programs teach), the aspiring goal setter ends up fixating on "wanting more" to cure the

In this article we'd like to share our approach to learner goal setting in the hope that other programs will find it useful.
Goal setting at intake
During the intake interview, Massachusetts adult education programs ask learners about their reasons for wanting to study. Among other things, this activity supports a Department of Education reporting requirement. At this stage, students usually have only a broad idea of what they want to accomplish. Examples of goals frequently mentioned at intake interviews are: "to speak English," "get a job," and "learn about the U.S." However, if students are to feel successful and motivated in class, and to persist in adult basic education classes in the face of the many obstacles in their lives, we believe it is necessary to make these general goals clearer and more specific.

Today, I would like to share with you this 'old' story that probably most of you had heard before. But, there is no harm to read it again and may be you will have different reflection this point in time. Here you go ...... One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

    Ways to Solve Relationship Problems
(*well, almost everything - we can't give you a 5 inch taller body!) by Stephanie Relfe B.Sc. (Syd.) Ten years ago I did a workshop where I learned a great secret about goal setting and how to have your life EXACTLY the way you want it. The secret is to WRITE your goals down. I heard that this was researched in a study at Yale University about this, as is described in Tony Robbins' book Unlimited Power. I have since been informed that that is an urban myth and that no such study was done. See http://www.realscienceofsuccess.com/YaleStudy.htm However - it DOES WORK! (Was the original study covered up?) This is so childishly simple, that it is hard to believe that it works. I have used this many times over the years. I have found that this REALLY works. Writing what you wants creates a kind of miracle. This probably works in the following manner. When you first think of something, it is just a thought in your head. It is not yet in the physical universe. However, thought is energy and the universe and everything in it are also made of energy. When you write something down, your thought now exists in the physical universe. Somehow, the physical universe eventually follows suit. Many intuitive people know that thought creates reality. If you need scientific, rational reasoning as to why this works, I suggest you read "The Holographic Universe" by Michael Talbot.

7 Must-Have Conditions to Goal Setting
    By Emmanuel Segui
The three keys to living without limits have always been the same. They are clarity, competence, and concentration. Goal setting will help you live without limits. Learning how to set goals is an art. Learn why setting goals is a necessity. Here are 7 Must-have conditions to set goals.
  • State your goal in positive terms . People often set a goal in terms of what they don't want! "I don't want to smoke, to be angry..." It's "what I want to do or want to be" See the difference? Hear the nuance? Are you ready to state positively every goal you want to achieve?
Make sure the goal can be self-initiated and maintained. The goal doesn't depend on the attitude of your neighbor, on the behavior of your wife or family. The success of your goal must depend on you, and you alone.
Your goal must be sensory specific . Here comes the importance of clarity. The clearer the picture, the more compelling and the more attractive it is, the greater the drive to reach your final destination. Act as if the goal is already achieved. Make a very clear image, in rich details, and you will be so enthusiastic that you will automatically attract the solution.
State the context of the goal . "Where and when will my goal be achieved?" The answer can be obvious for some goals but not at all for others. Try to be as specific as possible.

In relation to family goal setting it must be recognized that most families live within a certain budget. Living within budget can help your family pay off those credit cards once and for all and realize your child’s dreams of going to college or your dream of getting a bigger and better house. Perhaps your family goal settting includes seeing your kids go from a C average to a B or have more quality family time together. Maybe you want to start your own home-based business so that you can spend more time with your family.

Goal Setting 101: Some Simple Things that Harvard Never Taught Us
... but We Found Out Anyway
Here's a few things you need to know about goals that they are not going to teach you in school.
First Short term goals are far more likely to be met than long term goals. In fact, achieving small goals one after the other builds self-confidence. When coaches take over professional sports teams and want to turn them around into winners, they do their magic by first giving the players small, short term goals they can succeed in. After awhile, the players believe they can do the bigger things demanded of them. Moral : For your spiritual practice start with small goals and then build upwards. If you want to change things or have trouble getting started, don't try to be Superman in one day. Start with little achievable bits and pieces, record your goals and efforts in a checklist, and keep at it. Start meditating with only 10 or 15 minutes a day and then expand upon that. First get started, then embellish.
Two Long term goals that are too big can actually seem so overwhelming that you don't even want to get started. So here's what you do don't look at how far you have to go, but at how far you have come.
