The purpose of this module is to provide your Instructional Learning Team with a time frame for how you can begin implement and use lesson study to benefit you and the students with whom you work. The tasks to complete in this module will help you work through the process of establishing a timeline for your team. As in the previous module, this module provides links to several video clips featuring Japanese educators working through the lesson study process. The videos have been dubbed with English and provide a glimpse into a working lesson study group. Some of the video clips are on the Lesson Study in Japan Web site funded by the National Science Foundation. In order to view the videos you will need to have the QuickTime player installed on your computer.

Lesson plans that do the job of linking past, present, and future learning As teachers, we are privileged to guide children through the magical journey that is learning, building a continuum of knowledge that embraces past, present, and future. But do children always experience individual lessons as part of the learning journey? By helping children to see the acquisition of knowledge as a whole, rather than as a collection of unrelated steps, we can strengthen the power of our teaching. One way to do this is by planning lessons that help the students evaluate what they have learned, while also giving them a direction in which to proceed. An effective lesson contains these four distinct features:

    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/teachers/lessonplans/health/fitness/fitforlife
Design and Implement a Personal Fitness Plan OVERVIEW:
The NASPE national standards in physical education indicate a need for "students to exhibit a physically active lifestyle" and understand that "physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction." The goal of education is to facilitate a learning environment that encourages learning for all and provides opportunities for students to engage in, apply, synthesize and evaluate ones learning. The goal of the physical educator is to provide an avenue for students to participate in and establish lifetime health and fitness habits and goals. Once the teacher has provided instruction in a fitness center on the FITT principle, components of fitness, overload principle, specificity, safety and proper technique of all equipment, motivational and monitoring techniques and strategies, it is time to move from guided practice to independent practice. The overall goal is having all students through self - evaluation, create and implement a personal fitness plan to be carried out over ten physical education classes. Estimated Time:
This unit is approximately 12 - 15 classes. Students will need to know proper technique and safety of all fitness room equipment prior to the unit of designing and implementing a fitness plan to be recorded in a journal over ten class periods.

    Understanding the health care crisis
Grade Level: High School Students (Grade 9-12) Overview
At least two million people lost their health insurance in the last 13 months as unemployment rose and growing numbers of consumers decided they could not afford steeply rising costs. At least 40 million Americans were uninsured in February 2002. Estimated Time:
Two 55 min. periods preparation time with outside class time between preparation and presentation to allow for the possible extension involving interviews with community members involved in he total picture. Lesson objectives
    Students will:
Understand some of the problems faced by the uninsured through data collection.

is committed to providing training and service to school based law enforcement personnel. We know that we can make a positive difference through the relationships we build with students, administration and faculty in the school setting. One way to build these relationships is through education. Whether you teach daily or occasionally, we know it is important that you be professional, prepared and knowledgeable. As a result of the training we do nationally, one of the needs we hear expressed time and time again is the desire to share lesson plans. While we do this with the students in our Basic SRO Training, others may not have had the opportunity to attend our training or any formalized training, to teach them how to prepare a formal presentation. Many of you have expressed a desire to have lesson plans that have been prepared by other officers. To help meet your needs, we are providing you with a monthly lesson plan, on our web site, which has been prepared by officers currently teaching. All credit is given to the officer who's lesson plan is offered along with the officer's location, should you wish to contact him/her directly. The only thing we ask is that you be certain to verify any information before presenting it to your schools and consult local ordinances and state statutes to make it appropriate for your location. We offer this benefit to you in the hopes that it will help you to "build relationships that last a lifetime". This is the foundation and mission of our company to help not only you, but most importantly the young people who so desperately need your help and guidance. If you have information you'd like to share with other school based professionals please contact us by phone (407)851-5058, fax (407)855-8962 or e-mail: sroinfo @ aol.com.

Taking these reasons, as well as language acquisition needs, into consideration when planning a class or individual instruction is crucial for a successful learning experience. This is probably as important for the student as for the teacher. When a student understands his/her reasons for learning English well, he can then better plan his learning strategy. In the classroom, he/she can help the teacher identify needs and desires. If the student is learning alone, he/she can find learning materials based on a better knowledge of what his/her objectives are. Let's take a look at two of the more common reasons for learning English and what might work well for achieving learning goals.

"The Dangers of Drug Abuse" Estimated Time of Completion: Two to three classroom periods. I. Summary:
For grades 4-7. Students this age should understand that they will be faced with a variety of decisions regarding their health, and that some of them might involve substances of abuse. Experimentation with drugs often begins in early adolescence. According to the results of the 2001 Youth Risk Behavior Survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov):
    • 78.2% of high school students had one or more drinks of alcohol in their lifetime.
    • 47.1% had one or more drinks of alcohol in the past 30 days.
    • 29.9% had 5 or more drinks of alcohol on one or more occasions during the past 30 days.
    • In addition to morbidity and mortality due to injury, drug use is related to suicide, early unwanted pregnancy, school failure, delinquency, and transmissions of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
    • Despite improvements in recent years, drug use is greater among youth in the United States than has been documented in any other industrialized nation in the world.
