161. Global Warming
Describes how the greenhouse effect is changing the climate.
http://library.thinkquest.org/CR0215471/global_warming.htm
What is global warming? Global warming is when the earth heats up (the temperature rises). It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This hurts many people, animals, and plants. Many cannot take the change, so they die. What is the greenhouse effect? The greenhouse effect is when the temperature rises because the sun’s heat and light is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere. This is like when heat is trapped in a car. On a very hot day, the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the car, by going through the windows, but it can’t get back out. This is what the greenhouse effect does to the earth. The heat and light can get through the atmosphere, but it can’t get out. As a result, the temperature rises. The squiggle lines coming from the sun are visible light and the lines and arrows inside the car are infrared light. The sun’s heat can get into the car through the windows but is then trapped.

Global Warming is an interactive online lesson that will educate students about this highly debated environmental issue. Students will be given the chance to research global warming with global warming web sites linked to our lesson. Then students can put their knowledge to the test with either a classroom debate on global warming, or a written essay about the effects. Grade Level: The Global Warming lesson is designed for grades 9 through 12.
It is designed to take 30 minutes to read through. Research using the lesson could take several hours. Overview: The Global Warming lesson is designed to give students a working definition of global warming and some of the reasons why there are two divided sides that debate about it. The bulk of information about global warming is left for the students to discover. The lesson explains the arguments of both sides and gives suggestions on topics to research and find out more. To help the students, we have provided links to web sites from both sides of the global warming debate. Those pages have links from them to other global warming pages, and so on. There is a wealth of information about global warming on the Internet, and with a little work, students can find what they need. By making the students research global warming instead of just reading it from the lesson, students learn research skills, and are free to make up their own minds about global warming. The motivation for students to do the research is their assignment.

Increased carbon dioxide has, however, markedly increased plant growth rates. Predictions of harmful climatic effects due to future increases in minor greenhouse gases like CO2 are in error and do not conform to current experimental knowledge. Audience Anyone who is concerned over the hysteria generated by the current misinformation about Global Warming.

Greenhouse Effect Shown above is an Infrared Map of the Earth. Red areas represent regions of high heat retention in the atmosphere. This is an equatorial band because that is where the atmosphere has the most water vapor. The earth has a natural greenhouse effect due to trace amounts of H and CO that naturally occur. The enhanced greenhouse effect refers to the augmentation of these natural gases by human activities. What's the evidence? The energy balance in the atmosphere is shown here:
The main components in this diagram are the following:
  • Short wavelength (optical wavelengths) radiation from the Sun reaches the top of the atmosphere.
  • Clouds reflect 17% back into space. If the earth gets more cloudy, as some climate models predict, more radiation will be reflected back and less will reach the surface
  • 8% is scattered backwards by air molecules:
  • 6% is actually directly reflected off the surface back into space
  • So the total reflectivity of the earth is 31%. This is technically known as an

The Green House Network (GHN) is dedicated to public education about the dangersof climate change, and the need for urgent action to halt global warming.
http://www.greenhousenet.org/
Green House Network Take action to stop global warming! Green House Network global warming education programs multiply grassroots leadership supporting the clean energy revolution that we need to stop global warming. Our model for social change is the Highlander Education and Research Center in Tennessee. During the late 1950s, virtually every major civil rights activist, from Rosa Parks to Dr. Martin Luther King, attended Highlander workshops. As the Highlander Center did during the labor and civil rights movements, we bring together citizen activists and educators, provide information, networking, tools, and organizing models. These leaders return home to engage in action and education helping to stop global warming now. THE NEED TO ACT IS URGENT:
Global warming demands action now. Scientists are forecasting a warming of between 2 and 11 degrees F over the next century. During the last Ice Age the world averaged only 9 degrees cooler than it is today. We thus face the very real possibility of a swing in global temperatures of Ice-Age magnitude within the lifetimes of our children. It is no exaggeration to say that, unchecked, global warming will cause more human suffering and destroy more natural ecosystems than has any other industrial pollutant in our history. Climate stabilization will require an extremely rapid transition toward a clean energy future-one based on solar, wind and biomass-generated power, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It will take a powerful social movement to overcome political and corporate inertia and catalyze the clean energy revolution we need in order to avoid unimaginable change to human and natural systems. We need committed, skilled, persuasive climate communicators and advocates to make that movement a reality.

E-Mail This Article Published on Friday, January 30, 2004 by CommonDreams.org How Global Warming May Cause the Next Ice Age... by Thom Hartmann While global warming is being officially ignored by the political arm of the Bush administration, and Al Gore's recent conference on the topic during one of the coldest days of recent years provided joke fodder for conservative talk show hosts, the citizens of Europe and the Pentagon are taking a new look at the greatest danger such climate change could produce for the northern hemisphere - a sudden shift into a new ice age. What they're finding is not at all comforting. In quick summary, if enough cold, fresh water coming from the melting polar ice caps and the melting glaciers of Greenland flows into the northern Atlantic, it will shut down the Gulf Stream, which keeps Europe and northeastern North America warm. The worst-case scenario would be a full-blown return of the last ice age - in a period as short as 2 to 3 years from its onset - and the mid-case scenario would be a period like the "little ice age" of a few centuries ago that disrupted worldwide weather patterns leading to extremely harsh winters, droughts, worldwide desertification, crop failures, and wars around the world. Here's how it works.

Hurricanes getting worse with global warming
If it sounds to you like Florida is besieged more now than in the past by hurricanes, you'd be right. Kerry Emanuel, professor of meteorology in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, analyzed records of tropical cyclonescommonly called hurricanes or typhoonsfrom the middle of the 20th century in the North Pacific and North Atlantic and found that the duration of the cyclones and the highest wind speeds have increased by about 50 percent over the past 50 years. The increase in storm intensity, he added, mirrors the increase in the average surface temperature of the more southern tropical oceans. This suggests that this warming is responsible for the greater power of the cyclones. Although some holdouts remain, most scientists, upon reviewing temperature and climate data, agree that global warming is real. A debate, however, still exists on how much of it is caused by human behavior, and the debate has become highly politicized. Even so, the phenomenon is being given a high priority among researchers.

171. Global Climate Coalition Is The Voice Of Business And Industry On Global Warming
Lobby group formed in 1989 to provide a voice for industry and in particular the oil industry - in the debate on climate change and global warming. Seeks to discredit human-induced climate change theories and argue against CO2 reduction.
http://www.globalclimate.org/
The Global Climate Coalition has been deactivated.  The industry voice on climate change has served its purpose by contributing to a new national approach to global warming.
The Bush administration will soon announce a climate policy that is expected to rely on the development of new technologies to reduce greenhouse emissions, a concept strongly supported by the GCC.
The coalition also opposed Senate ratification of the Kyoto Protocol that would assign such stringent targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions that economic growth in the U. S. would be severely hampered and energy prices for consumers would skyrocket. The GCC also opposed the treaty because it does not require the largest developing countries to make cuts in their emissions.
At this point, both Congress and the Administration agree that the U.S. should not accept the mandatory cuts in emissions required by the protocol.  NEWS

Hurricanes and Global Warming - Is There a Connection?
Filed under: by Stefan Rahmstorf, Michael Mann, Rasmus Benestad, Gavin Schmidt, and William Connolley On Monday August 29, Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, Louisiana and Missisippi, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. It will be some time until the full toll of this hurricane can be assessed, but the devastating human and environmental impacts are already obvious. Katrina was the most feared of all meteorological events, a major hurricane making landfall in a highly-populated low-lying region. In the wake of this devastation, many have questioned whether global warming may have contributed to this disaster. Could New Orleans be the first major U.S. city ravaged by human-caused climate change?

My topic today sounds humorous but unfortunately I am serious. I am going to
argue that extraterrestrials lie behind global warming. Or to speak more
precisely, I will argue that a belief in extraterrestrials has paved the
way, in a progression of steps, to a belief in global warming. Charting this
progression of belief will be my task today. Let me say at once that I have no desire to discourage anyone from believing
in either extraterrestrials or global warming. That would be quite
impossible to do. Rather, I want to discuss the history of several
widely-publicized beliefs and to point to what I consider an emerging crisis in the whole enterprise of science-namely the increasingly uneasy relationship between hard science and public policy. I have a special interest in this because of my own upbringing. I was born in the midst of World War II, and passed my formative years at the height of the Cold War. In school drills, I dutifully crawled under my desk in
