Sizzling year. Torrid decade. Blistering future?
5 FEB 1999 When the global warming debate first heated up in the late 1980s, scientists warned that the Earth our grandkids walked might be cooking like a fried egg on an El Paso sidewalk. The prediction ran like this: Gathering levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere would trap heat, causing a rapid warming and damaging the atmosphere, the oceans and the economy. Measurements at weather stations around the globe show these global average temperatures in degrees Celsius, relative to the 1951-1980 average (about 14°C). Recent data is better than older data Goddard Institute for Space Studies And our grandchildren could face drought, fire and flood essentially a list of biblical catastrophes. These days, after 18 straight months of record temperatures, the concern is not about the next generation. It's about next year . And 18 record-setting months are only one of the warning signs.
1998 saw the 20th straight year of above-normal surface temperatures, 0.4 degrees F hotter than 1995, the previous record. In 1998, the hottest year since scientists began keeping track of such things in the mid-1800s, global temperatures were 1.04 degrees F above the average for 1961-1990.

Global warming unpredictable, scientists say
This animation shows the ozone hole over Antarctica from Aug. 1-Nov. 30, 1997. The dark purple represents a thin layer of ozone, dark red represents a thick layer of ozone.
Climate scientists are changing their theory about greenhouse gas emissions and global warming and have come up with more pessimistic — and even optimistic — outlooks, according to the Sept. 16 issue of New Scientist. Emissions in the year 2100 could be five times as high as today's, which is double the amount previously predicted. Or, emissions could be lower, the scientists say. The unknown factor that allows predictions to be good and bad is how technology to reduce emissions will be developed. The warning was issued in a draft special report on emissions from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change due out in March of 2000. The draft reflects the consensus view of hundreds of scientists and economists.

The Carbon Cycle
The concentration of carbon in living matter (18%) is almost 100 times greater than its concentration in the earth (0.19%). So living things extract carbon from their nonliving environment. For life to continue, this carbon must be recycled. That is our topic.
Carbon exists in the nonliving environment as:
  • carbon dioxide (CO ) in the atmosphere and dissolved in water (forming HCO
  • carbonate rocks (limestone and coral = CaCO
  • deposits of coal, petroleum, and natural gas derived from once-living things
  • dead organic matter, e.g., humus in the soil
Carbon enters the biotic world through the action of autotrophs:
  • primarily photoautotrophs , like plants and algae, that use the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide to organic matter. Links to photosynthesis
  • and to a small extent, chemoautotrophs archaeans that do the same but use the energy derived from an oxidation of molecules in their substrate.
Carbon returns to the atmosphere and water by
  • respiration (as CO
  • burning
  • decay (producing CO if oxygen is present, methane (CH

Senators Struggle to Act on Global Warming
By Juliet Eilperin Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, July 22, 2005; Page A03 After listening to some of the world's preeminent climate researchers yesterday, a bipartisan group of senators said they saw the need to take quick action on global warming but were struggling to reach consensus on what policy to adopt. Several Republicans on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee said during the two-hour hearing that they would consider adopting mandatory limits on emissions of heat-trapping gases but that they prefer the approach of promoting new technologies that do not contribute to the problem.
Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.) said he does not believe there is a simple solution to global warming.

Bush to unveil global warming plan
WASHINGTON (CNN) Facing mounting criticism over his failure to confront the problem of global warming, President Bush is set to announce two global warming research initiatives. The multi-million dollar programs would be dedicated to researching the causes of global warming and developing technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a senior administration official told CNN. Bush is scheduled to make the announcements during a Rose Garden ceremony Monday morning, just hours before departing for his first presidential trip to Europe where global warming is one of a handful of issues expected to dominate the agenda. Aides did not reveal the total dollar amount for the new programs, but said up to $25 million would be used to build climate observation systems in developing countries. 112. A Statement On Global Warming (P. Barrett)
A statement by Professor Peter Barrett (Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand) on the reality of global warming from the viewpoint of an earth scientist.
http://www.gsnz.org.nz/gs_archive/gsprpb.htm
Evidence for global warming - and why we need to take action The following statement was prepared by Professor Peter Barrett FRSNZ (Director of the Antarctic Centre, Victoria University of Wellington), and is a slighly amended version of an article originally published in the "Evening Post". We still see letters and articles in our newspapers claiming that global warming has nothing to do with human activity, and that there is no need to do anything about it. This claim is echoed and promoted by business interests, and risks deflecting Government efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas pollution. Do we really need to be concerned about this? I believe we do on two counts: 1. The claim denies a huge body of contrary published scientific evidence amassed over the last 15 years. Thus it trivialises this effort, and by implication all science.
2. Earth scientists have a better understanding than most of earth history and behaviour, and can appreciate the magnitude of effects that are bound to follow the 3-4 degree C global temperature rise projected for the next 100 years - giving a temperature as warm as the Eocene. How can we be so sure of this? For the last few years I have been following the work of the UN-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It consists of three Working Groups:

A Global Warning on Global Warming!
What is global warming?
Global warming is a general rise in global temperatures caused by an increasing concentration of gases in the atmosphere. These gases are overloading the natural blanket of gases that regulate the Earth's temperature and climate. The result is what we know as global warming. Virtually all respected scientists link the increase to emissions from human activities - things like burning oil, coal, and natural gas in our cars, power plants and factories. Carbon dioxide is the principal greenhouse gas that we emit from burning fossil fuels, which have naturally stored carbon underground for millions of years. Moreover, we do double damage by destroying great forests, grasslands and wetlands that in the past have absorbed excess gases from the atmosphere. This blanket of carbon dioxide is warming the planet at an increasing pace. Temperatures in the United States have increased by an average of one degree Fahrenheit during the 20th century, but the changes have been more pronounced in some regions and seasons. For example, winter temperatures in Alaska have increased by as much as seven degrees in the past 50 years. Globally, the ten hottest years on record have all occurred since 1991.

Please consider these materials carefully. The United States is very close to adopting an international agreement that would ration the use of energy and of technologies that depend upon coal, oil, and natural gas and some other organic compounds. This treaty is, in our opinion, based upon flawed ideas. Research data on climate change do not show that human use of hydrocarbons is harmful. To the contrary, there is good evidence that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is environmentally helpful. The proposed agreement would have very negative effects upon the technology of nations throughout the world, especially those that are currently attempting to lift from poverty and provide opportunities to the over 4 billion people in technologically underdeveloped countries.

118. Global Warming -- Research Issues
Would you like to do some research to find out more about global warming? The following are key questions in your research on global warming
http://solar-center.stanford.edu/sun-on-earth/glob-warm.html
Global Warming
Does it Exist?
If so, is it Man- or Sun-made?
Linked by GEsource Graph of solar activity versus climate
From Friis-Christensen, E., and K. Lassen, "Length of the solar cycle: An indicator of solar activity closely associated with climate," Science, 254, 698-700, 1991. Global warming a gradual increase in planet-wide temperatures is becoming more well documented and seems to be accepted by many scientists and people now as fact. Generally, this warming is attributed to the increase of green-house gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Some solar scientists are considering whether some part of global warming may be caused, by a periodic but small increase in the Sun's energy output. An increase of just 0.2% in the solar output could have the same affect as doubling the carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.
What is the Problem?
What is the evidence for global warming? Certainly, there are considerably more green-house gases (e.g. carbon dioxide) in our atmosphere than in previous times. And there appears to be some evidence that global temperatures are rising. But, how accurate and correct are our global warming statistics? And, do we really know what role, if any, the Sun might play in any global warming patterns? These issues are currently being debated, and may significantly affect you for the rest of your life. Would you like to do some research to find out more about global warming?

(Christian Science Monitor) This story was written by Peter N. Spotts. For years, hurricanes and typhoons have served as poster children for the hazards of global warming. When simulated tropical storms churn inside the silicon universe of researchers' computers, such cyclones grow in power, and sometimes in number as well, as tropical temperatures increase. But when researchers have looked for global warming's fingerprints on real tropical cyclones, the evidence often has been inconclusive. Now, one of the top researchers in the field reports that worldwide, these storms are nearly twice as powerful today as they were 30 years ago. Global warming has intensified the trend, exerting an influence stronger than he would have believed even a few months ago, he says.
