Power plants, cattle, and cars are some of the major contributors of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane.
Some possible effects of global warming are the inundation of low-lying islands due to rising sea levels, increased frequency of severe storms, and the retreat of glaciers and icecaps. In truth, the future probably fits somewhere between these two scenarios. But to gain an understanding of global warming, it is necessary to get to know the science behind the issue. next: Our Warming Planet Global Warming Introduction

Description
The 6+ billion inhabitants of earth aspire to higher standards of living. This takes energy. If fossil fuels continue to be the key source of energy their waste product, carbon dioxide, will produce disagreeable changes in the climate. Depletion of fossil fuels will cause the cost of energy and fuel based chemicals to spiral. Climate change and high fuel prices will thwart these aspirations and will increase the probability of lethal international conflicts over energy supplies. We must stop using fossil fuels.
Optimistically, we could switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources (solar, wind, etc.). Regrettably these sources are difficult to harvest and unreliable. They cannot, alone, serve as a base load energy supply for humanity. Fission nuclear power yields extremely hazardous waste for which no fully agreeable disposal method has been developed.
Laurence Williams applied aerospace systems analysis techniques to seek a new energy system.

He says that global warming is a contributory factor. In a paper appearing in the online edition of the journal Nature Kerry Emmanuel, professor of meteorology in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, writes: "My results suggest that future warming may lead to an upward trend in [hurricanes'] destructive potential, and - taking into account an increasing coastal population - a substantial increase in hurricane-related losses in the 21st century."

    Focus Areas
    Environmental Policy
Called “the best environmental think tank in the country” by The Wall Street Journal, the Competitive Enterprise Institute focuses on the development and promotion of free market approaches to environmental policy. We believe that where individual property rights exist in environmental resources, the environment is most likely to be protected, and that market institutions more effectively allow for the realization of environmental values than political agencies and bureaucracies. As a leading proponent of free market environmentalism, CEI’s program includes both an overall effort to reframe the environmental debate and a series of targeted projects to reform specific policies, ranging from risk regulation to global warming.

    Focus Areas
    Health and Safety
CEI is working to change the nature of the regulatory reform debate through its Death by Regulation Project. In the past, such debates have usually been lopsided affairs: On one side were regulatory advocates claiming to protect our health and safety; on the other side were reformers portrayed as being interested only in saving money. The Death by Regulation Project attempts to reframe this debate by examining how overregulation itself can be deadly. CEI has pioneered in exposing the lethal effects of a number of such regulations, such as automotive downsizing due to federal fuel economy standards and the delayed availability of new medical therapies due to Food and Drug Administration rules.
