http://www.epa.gov/globalwarming/kids/gw.html
Earth has warmed by about 1 over the past 100 years. But why? And how? Well, scientists are not exactly sure. The Earth could be getting warmer on its own, but many of the world's leading climate scientists think that things people do are helping to make the Earth warmer. Greenhouse Effect, Climate Change,
and Global Warming The Greenhouse Effect: Scientists are sure about the greenhouse effect . They know that greenhouse gases make the Earth warmer by trapping energy in the atmosphere Climate Change: Climate is the long-term average of a region's weather Global Warming: Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. When scientists talk about the issue of climate change, their concern is about global warming caused by human activities. next Global Warming Home Privacy and Security Notice Glossary ... EPA Home

NRDC’s global warming site provides information on the causes and effects ofglobal climate change, and offers solutions to the problem.
http://www.nrdc.org/globalWarming/default.asp
Higher temperatures threaten dangerous consequences: drought, disease, floods, lost ecosystems. And from sweltering heat to rising seas, global warming's effects have already begun. But solutions are in sight. We know where most heat-trapping gases come from: power plants and vehicles. And we know how to curb their emissions: modern technologies and stronger laws. NRDC is working to put these fixes in place. By shifting the perception of global warming from abstract threat to pressing reality, and promoting online activism. By pressing businesses to use less energy and build more efficient products. And by fighting for laws that will speed these advances.

Global Warming
In Brief : FAQ
Global Warming Basics
What it is, how it's caused, and what needs to be done to stop it.

What causes global warming? Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO annually.
Here's the good news: technologies exist today to make cars that run cleaner and burn less gas, modernize power plants and generate electricity from nonpolluting sources, and cut our electricity use through energy efficiency. The challenge is to be sure these solutions are put to use. Is the earth really getting hotter?

28. What Is Global Warming?
What is global warming? Simply put, human activities that create pollution are raising the Earth's temperature.

the farther forward you are likely to see."

The last decade of the 20th Century was the warmest in the entire global instrumental temperature record, starting in the mid-19th century. All 10 years rank among the 15 warmest, and include the 6 warmest years on record. This warmth is unusual for the past century, but what about in the context of past centuries or millennia? It is only through the reconstruction of past climate that we can truly evaluate the magnitude of this warming. NOAA's Paleoclimatology Program is working with scientists from around the world to study past climate in hopes of achieving a better understanding of the Earth's present and future climate. This site was developed to help educate, inform and highlight the importance of paleoclimate research; as well as to show how paleoclimate research relates to global warming and other important issues of climate variability and change. 19 May 2000

Developing the ability to confidently estimate the impacts of climate change on agriculture is critically important. If ever achieved, it could provide the global information needed to help farmers develop their own long-range responses to climate change. Unfortunately, we are a long way from having such a capability, and it may take a decade or more to substantially improve the resolution and accuracy of the Global Climate Models (GCMs) and evaluate the implications for agriculture.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Global mean surface temperatures 1856 to 2004 Mean temperature anomalies during the period 1995 to 2004 with respect to the average temperatures from 1940 to 1980 Global warming is a term used to describe the increase over time of the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans The scientific opinion on climate change , as expressed by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and explicitly endorsed by the national science academies of the nations, is that the average global temperature has risen 0.6 ± 0.2 ° C since the late 19th century, and that "most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities ", most prominently the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO ) and methane (CH ). A small minority of qualified scientists contest the view that humanity's actions have played a significant role in increasing recent temperatures. Uncertainties do exist regarding how much climate change should be expected in the future, and a hotly contested political and public debate exists over what actions, if any, should be taken in light of global warming. Based on the climate models referenced by the IPCC, temperatures may increase by 1.4 to 5.8 °C between 1990 and 2100
