This site created by Spencer Weart supplements his much shorter book, which tells the history of climate change research as a single connected narrative. Serious readers will find the full history on this site (about 250,000 words). Or see what critics say about the book and then order it from Harvard University Press or Amazon.com . Here are a series of items that summarise current arguments concerning global warming. They present various points of view and some of the basic problems in following the science. Keep in mind that the concept of global warming involves the study of an immense and very complex system. While the general consensus is that global warming is occurring and is in part caused by human activity [anthropogenic], anyone who tells you that global warming is understood and proven (or disproven), followed by some trite reason, simply does not understand the situation. The first two items that follow are recent reports on macro-climate.

ASHINGTON Allergy sufferers, beware: Global warming could bring more hay fever, according to government research that shows ragweed produces significantly more pollen as carbon dioxide increases. The ubiquitous weed makes nearly twice as much pollen now as it did 100 years ago and will likely double its production again over the coming century with predicted increases in carbon dioxide levels, the Agriculture Department study suggests. "This research may help us better understand the troubling impact of high carbon dioxide levels on our environment and our health," Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said Tuesday. About 15 percent to 20 percent of the population has hay fever or allergic reactions to plant pollen, dust and other airborne particles and ragweed is the major cause of the problem in the fall. The plant is found all over the country and is particularly prevalent in the Northeast and Midwest. The pollen grains are so small that they can travel many miles.

US Senate Rejects Greenhouse Gas Limits

Associated Press, June 23 2005
The US Senate rejected the amendment to the energy bill offered by Sens. McCain (R.-AZ) and Lieberman (D.-CT) by 60 votes to 38. The amendment would have imposed a "cap and trade" system on the US energy industry in an effort to restrict greenhouse gas emissions. The vote represented a reverse to Sen. McCain, whose amendment received 43 votes the last time it was offered.
European Emissions Increase Despite Kyoto Measures

European Environment Agency, June 21 2005
This report is the annual submission of the greenhouse gas inventory of the European Community to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It presents greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2003 by individual Member State and by economic sector. The report shows that, between 2002 and 2003, emissions in the 15 old member states increased by 53 million tonnes, or 1.3% and total EU emissions increased by 1.5%.

The map of early warning signs clearly illustrates the global nature of climate changes. In its 2001 assessment, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that, “an increasing body of observations gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system." Although factors other than climate may have intensified the severity of some of the events on the map, scientists predict such problems will increase if emissions of heat-trapping gases are not brought under control.

Environment
In many ways, America's environment has improved dramatically since the first Earth Day in 1970. The quality of the nation's air has improved substantially with respect to many pollutants, particularly lead after it was phased out as a gasoline additive several years ago. Water pollution from "point sources" like industrial facilities and wastewater treatment plants has seen similar improvement, though pollution from "nonpoint" sources principally urban, suburban and agriculture runoff has proved an intractable problem of ongoing concern. While these and other domestic environmental issues draw continued attention, however, many environmentalists are now placing international issues at the top of their list of priorities. Issues like global warming, population growth, deforestation, and the continued loss of many species of plants and animals have reached increasing prominence on the environmental agenda. These issues are not without controversy. While few people consider themselves anti-environment, many environmental policies draw considerable opposition from those who are adversely affected economically. Domestically, industries complain of a heavy regulatory burden and question the benefits of new environmental proposals. Property owners complain that their rights are being infringed. There is also significant conflict in the international arena, where poor, developing nations argue that they can not afford new environmental restrictions and that rich, industrialized nations, who have until recently been the world's primary polluters, should shoulder most of the burden.

US Climate Impacts
The impact of global warming in North America
Click on the numbered icons below for more information.
The vast North American continent ranges from the lush sub-tropical climate of Florida to the frozen ice and tundra of the Arctic. Within these extremes are two wealthy industrialized countries with diverse ecosystems at risk. Yet the United States and Canada are two of the largest global emitters of the greenhouse gases that contribute to a warming climate. Examples of all 10 of the "hotspot" categories can be found in this region, including changes such as polar warming in Alaska, coral reef bleaching in Florida, animal range shifts in California, glaciers melting in Montana, and marsh loss in the Chesapeake Bay. For North America we have many more hotspots than for some other regions of the world, although impact studies have been emerging in larger numbers in recent years from previously under-studied regions. This higher density of early warning signs in the US and Canada is due in part to the fact that these regions have more readily accessible climatic data and more comprehensive programs to monitor and study environmental change, in part to the disproportionate warming that has been observed over the mid-to-high-latitude continents compared to other regions during the last century, and in part to capture the attention of North Americans who need to take action now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
