Compiled by Jonathan Adams, Environmental Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, USA
An atlas of the ice age Earth
The following ecosystems maps, compiled by Jonathan Adams, are still under development and as-yet unpublished. Their presentation here is intended to provoke comment and criticism which can lead to them being improved. They are based on simple compilations of the available information in the literature, relying heavily on the conclusions given by review papers for each subregion. Dates are given in radiocarbon years; the actual chronology in terms of 'real' years is still being worked out in the literature. Blocks of text are given here to accompany the map for each time slice. The cited references are listed in a separate document. References cited on the QEN pages, including those cited here

162. GTOS :: Global Terrestrial Observing System : Welcome
GTOS mission is to provide policy makers, resource managers and researchers with the data they need to detect, quantify, locate and understand changes (especially reductions) in the capacity of terrestrial ecosystems to support sustainable development.
http://www.fao.org/gtos/
GTOS is a programme for observations, modelling, and analysis of terrestrial ecosystems to support sustainable development.
GTOS facilitates access to information on terrestrial ecosystems so that researchers and policy makers can detect and manage global and regional environmental change.

The GCTE core project has ended, although several areas of research remain active including: Terrestrial Ecosystem Responses to Atmospheric and Climatic Change (TERACC)
The Biosphere-Atmosphere Stable Isotope Network (BASIN)
The meetings page will also continue to be updated with upcoming workshop information. The remainder of this website documents some of the highlights of our work over the past decade. We would like to thank the many scientists who participated in GCTE activities. US Climate Impacts
"An increasing body of observations gives
a collective picture of a warming world
and other changes in the climate system."
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), 2001
This map illustrates the local consequences of global warming. FINGERPRINTS : Direct manifestations of a widespread and long-term trend toward warmer global temperatures
Heat waves and periods of unusually warm weather
Ocean warming, sea-level rise and coastal flooding
Glaciers melting
Arctic and Antarctic warming
HARBINGERS : Events that foreshadow the types of impacts likely to become more frequent and widespread with continued warming.
Spreading disease
Earlier spring arrival
Plant and animal range shifts and population changes
Coral reef bleaching
Downpours, heavy snowfalls, and flooding
Droughts and fires
The map of early warning signs clearly illustrates the global nature of climate changes. In its 2001 assessment, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that, “an increasing body of observations gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system." Although factors other than climate may have intensified the severity of some of the events on the map, scientists predict such problems will increase if emissions of heat-trapping gases are not brought under control.
