Although the Earth system is constantly changing, ozone depletion, increases in atmospheric greenhouse gases, large-scale pollution and changing patterns of natural resource use demonstrate that human activities are altering the Earth system at an accelerated pace. Awareness of this has led to an evolving international consensus on the importance of both increasing our scientific understanding of global change and linking scientific findings to policy decisions.
The Role of the Arctic
The Arctic is characterized by one of the most extreme environments on the planet, with limited sunlight, extreme temperatures, and a short growing season. Sea ice, snow cover, glaciers, tundra, permafrost, boreal forests, and peatlands are all sensitive indicators of change, susceptible to subtle variations in sunlight, surface temperature, ocean heat transport, air and ocean chemistry, and the particulate loading of the atmosphere.

Global Climate Change Links This page provides links to web pages that we at CDIAC feel do a responsible job of presenting information and discussion pertinent to the science behind the global climate change ("global warming") debate. These sites include those on both sides of the debate; some asserting that global warming is a clear and present danger, and others that might be labeled global warming "skeptics." Some of these sites don't take a position per se; they exist to offer the public objective scientific information and results on our present understanding of the climate system. The list is not intended to be comprehensive, by any means. We hope it will be especially helpful for those who may be just beginning their research into global climate change issues. These links will take you outside of CDIAC's web server. Many will lead you to other valuable links pages. Please feel free to email Dale Kaiser at CDIAC regarding any broken links on this page , or with the addresses of quality links you think might improve this list (although we intend to keep the list manageable in size). Thank you.

PERSONNEL REPORTS RESEARCH ... CONTACT The Center for Global Change Science CGCS ) at MIT was established in January, 1990, to address long-standing scientific problems that impede our ability to accurately predict changes in the global environment. The CGCS is interdisciplinary , involving both research and education , and builds on the long-established programs in meteorology oceanography hydrology chemistry , and satellite remote sensing carried out in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT. In addition, the CGCS , along with the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research CEEPR ), is a parent organization of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change , which involves significant cross-discipline interaction
The long-term goal of the CGCS is to utilize theory and observations to understand the basic processes and mechanisms controlling the global environment, and thereby to accurately predict environmental changes. Initial objectives involve a sustained program of basic scientific research focused on five fundamental processes in the global climate machine:
  • Convection, Atmospheric Water Vapor, and Cloud Formation

    http://web.mit.edu/globalchange/www/
The MIT JOINT PROGRAM ON THE SCIENCE AND POLICY OF GLOBAL CHANGE was founded in 1991 as an interdisciplinary organization that conducts research, independent policy analysis, and public communication on issues of global environmental change. It is not a degree-granting entity.
The Joint Program combines the capabilities of two pre-existing MIT research centers: the CENTER FOR GLOBAL CHANGE SCIENCE and the CENTER FOR ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY RESEARCH . It brings together an interactive group of faculty, staff and student researchers. Resources of the parent centers are strengthened by links to the MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY'S ECOSYSTEMS CENTER in Woods Hole, Mass., to the MIT CLIMATE MODELING INITIATIVE , and other MIT environmental programs.
The Program's work is focused on the integration of natural and social science aspects of the climate issue, to produce analyses relevant to ongoing national and international discussions. Cooperative efforts engage the Program with leading research institutions and non-profit organizations worldwide. Financial support is provided by an international group of sponsors from government organizations, foundations, and industry.

    Welcome
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research ( BER ) has established the Global Change Education Program (GCEP) to promote undergraduate and graduate training in support of the Department's global change research activities. Global change research encompasses a wide variety of study areas, including atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climatology, and terrestrial processes. Global change research is supported by BER through the Atmospheric Science Program ( ASP ), the Environmental Meteorology Program (EMP), the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement ( ARM ) Program, the Terrestrial Carbon Processes ( TCP ) effort, the Program for Ecosystem Research ( PER ), and studies carried out under the direction of the National Institute for Global Environmental Change ( NIGEC ). Other studies address integrated assessments, predictions, and policy, as well as paleoclimatology and earth system processes. The two components of GCEP are the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience ( SURE ) and the Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships ( GREF ). A major goal of GCEP is to involve undergraduate students at the end of their sophomore or junior year in BER-supported global change research, then continue this experience during subsequent undergraduate summers. SURE is designed to support individual undergraduate students during multiple years. To further improve the quality of emerging scientists in disciplines related to global change research, SURE students will be encouraged to apply for GREF graduate fellowships and postdoctoral study programs.
