Photographic materials have complex physical and chemical structures that present special preservation challenges to the librarian and archivist. Since the birth of photography in the late 1830s, many different photographic processes and materials have been utilized, each subject to deterioration through time and with use. Although deterioration is an ongoing natural process, nevertheless much can be done to slow the rate at which it takes place in photographs. Deteriorated photographs may require specialized conservation treatment by a professional photograph conservator, often a costly, skill-demanding, and time-consuming procedure. For the majority of photographs in research collections, single-item conservation of deteriorated photographs is probably not a feasible or a cost-effective preservation solution. Instead, preventive conservation actions such as and maintenance of a good environment, promoting proper care and handling through staff and user education, and the use of good quality storage housings, will have a more lasting, positive impact on the preservation of a collection.

s with a number of other points concerning the cathedral of Chartres, the romantics, always grasping at historical enigmas, had believed in finding one concerning the lost secret of the " blue of Chartres ". In fact, it appears that this colour, for which its use is justified to lighten the darker vaults of Fulbert's cathedral, had been deliberately abandoned when the question was confronted regarding the influx of light provoked by the architectural daring of the new cathedral constructed beginning in 1194. The glass-makers of the following generations had sufficiently admired these works to insert - not without " restoring " them - the three western windows into the new façade, opening up these first bays that the solid masses of the towers risked to make rather dark, and to give to Notre-Dame of the Beautiful Window a place in the ambulatory south of the choir. But the explosion of light into the huge bays of the Gothic cathedral completely changed the facts of the problem. Without doubt the master glass-makers had at that time simply noted that the bright afternoon light didn't leave much to be seen of the very pale blues if they were misused. The balance of reds and saturated blues that, with all its usual harmony of the range of violet, distinguish the stained-glass windows of the 13th century, was better suited in the brilliant light of Ile-de-France.

This article was originally printed in the Seattle bead journal "About BEADS" in the April 1998 issue. To learn more about this valuable and truly unique glass art publication or to subscribe click on the bead.
As early as 2000 BC, the Egyptians and Romans were creating advanced glass art. Crafting multi-colored glass bowls, beautiful jewelry and decorative wall tiles, they visualized and made masterpieces. Many examples of their work exist today in museums around the world. Among the most interesting glass techniques from that era is something that, just since 1935, has been making a resurgence: Fusing. With 20th century technology, and inexpensive kilns with modern engineering innovations, and a blending of the old processes, glass fusing is much more accessible than in Roman times. Plus, now we can produce a palette of fusible colors of glass ranging across the visible spectrum. Any one of us can explore the full potential of glass. Try this technique, you may fall in love with glass art all over again! This is what happened to me. I'm primarily a glass beadmaker and jewelry designer who has fallen in love with fusing glass! When an acquaintance at my day job offered me a box of discarded stained glass materials in trade for some of my lampworked beads I couldn't resist. I'm never one to turn down a good trade! I figured at the very least I could cut it up into strips and make beads (then, I didn't know about stained glass and compatibility problems).

111. Welcome Carmen Lozar's Gallery
Allegorical glass sculptures make with mould, flamework, fused and kiln cast glass techniques.
http://www.carmenlozar.com
Carmen Lozar was drawn to glass for its purity, fragility, and the innate sense of motion it can bring to a work of art. In each sculpture, Carmen uses cast and flameworked glass to fashion narratives, which are often reflective of her life. Relating and interlacing contemporary ideas into a traditional medium, Carmen creates pieces that are at once eloquent tableaus of her own history and also evocative of the human experience. She infuses each piece with the precious, the forgotten, and the unrealized. Galleries Currently Featuring Works gallery the artist ... contact

The Bridge Studio Profile
A fter 20 years as a partner in Thorn Glass Studio, artist Heather Wood opened her own warm glass studio in Elora, Ontario, in 2004. Heather sandblasts and paints on glass, as well as integrates glass beads in her textile works. "Whether I am working with textiles, glass, wood, or canvas, I am always using intuitive skills in combination with colour, line and form to express myself. Both my sculptural work and functional glass or textile pieces give voice to my visual ideas." Painting, sandblasting, slumping and fusing are some of the techniques Heather utilizes in response to the transparency and fluidity of the glass. Painting, dyeing, and surface embellishment are also the components used in the creation of her textile work. In the sculptural work, glass is used to communicate Heather's thoughts on man’s fragile status in the larger environment. Found objects in combination with painting and sandblasted glass express the relationship between the human body and our natural environment.
