William Morris Biography
William Morris was born in Carmel, California in 1957, and received his degrees from California State University at Chico and Central Washington University. He is considered to be one of the most gifted and innovative glass artists in America today. He lives in Seattle where he originally worked as Dale Chihuly's gaffer (master glassblower) in the early 1980's, and has since maintained his own studio. Morris' work has been strongly influenced by his interest in archeology and ancient pagan cultures, and addresses the timeless relationship between humans and their enviroment. His work evokes images from a time when man was more in tune with nature, and is subliminally suggestive of ritual signifigance. Various works such as the Stonehenge Series, Artifact Vessels, Suspended Artifacts, and Rhyton Vessels illustrate symbolical, mythological influences. He also acknowledges the influence of Italian artists who have shared their knowledge of techniques for crafting glass, so essential to the realization of Morris' ideas into form. Another unique aspect of Morris' work is his treatment of surface texture, achieved by various techniques such as sprinkling powdered glass and minerals onto a blown surface, etching, and acid washing to achieve "ancient" and textural diversity.

Working together blowing bowls and bottles with the renowned Boyd Sugiki, the students –from Turkey, UK, US and Japan- collaborated to created fire circles of frienship to float in the Golden Horn. Each circle represents one of the five continents. The installation is made from 500 recycled bottles, reaffirming a respect for all the uses of glass from simple functionality to a highly complex medium of artistic expression.

Mosaic Techniques
Mosaic Technique and Construction The method by which mosaics are made hasn’t changed much since ancient times. Advancements in tools and materials have made the process easier, quicker, and the results more varied and visually appealing, but over all the process is the same. There are few written records of early mosaic techniques. The most comprehensive information regarding the creation of mosaic art was written around 77 A.D. by Pliny the Elder, a roman officer and encyclopedist. In the 36th volume of his Natural History series Pliny describes the technique for the proper preparation of mosaic ground. According to Pliny the preparation of mosaic ground began with a layer called the statumen. The statumen was a layer of tightly packed pebbles and rocks between three and five inches (8 to 12 cm) thick. On top of this layer was a ten inches (25 cm) of rough mortar called rudus. The rudus was comprised of three parts gravel and fragments of terracotta and one part lime. The rudus was to be covered with a layer of mortar called the nucleus which was also about three to five inches thick. The mortar used in the nucleus was made of three parts sand mixed with smashed tiles and bricks and one part lime. The mortar used in the nucleus was of a finer grade than that used in the rudus. The design was inscribed into the nucleus and the mosaic tiles were affixed to the top with a layer of mortar created from fine sand and lime. The lime was often colored so that the lime between the mosaic tiles would match the color of the mosaic surface.

  • CHANDELIERS ~ ABOUT RED FERN GLASS ~ The Studio GENERAL Red Fern Glass is the small hot glass studio of Ed Pennebaker. Ed makes Art Glass Lighting, Sculptural Pieces and Christmas Ornaments using traditional offhand glassblowing techniques. All the glass is made by Ed in his Arkansas backwoods studio. His wife Trish provides moral support and occasional advice. Her daughter Katie has taken on the wrapping, packing, shipping job along with other miscellaneous duties. They all believe in working incessantly, cultivating concepts, discrimination and technique. STUDIO The studio is in the woods near Osage, Arkansas. It started as a pottery studio built by Newt Lale of Osage Clayworks. In 1990 Newt bought the old Stamps Historical Store, a three story native stone building built in 1901. Newt moved to downtown Osage. And I moved way out in the woods. I remodeled the studio and closed in the "kiln shed" for a hot glass shop. I have built my own furnaces, glory holes and annealers and some tools I use in glassmaking. For a number of years I melted my glass from the raw materials even using Arkansas sand. But because of the dust, time and storage space factors involved in "batching" my own glass I have switched to melting most of my colors from Spruce Pine Batch,a premixed batch formula, adding my own colorants like cobalt, iron, copper, and nickel. Some colors are melted from "cullet", previously melted glass with the colorants already in the glass.

If you have questions or comments regarding the source material, please contact the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art directly through either this phone number or web address: September 17 - November 21, 2004 O opens September 17 at the Loretto Museum and will remain on view until November 21, 2004. In total, the exhibition features 30 complex works of art. A brief history of glass art Despite the feverish attention and intrigue among glass art, the genre itself is not a necessarily new one. Louis Comfort Tiffany, Frank Lloyd Wright and the company, Steuben Glass, were among the most notable early champions for glass art in the nation's history. The buzz created by those pioneers would eventually lead to the American studio glass movement, an event in American art that would change the glass art medium and push its possibilities and limitations. In 1962, Harvey Littleton, a ceramics professor, and Dominick Labino, a chemist and engineer, held workshops at the Toledo Museum of Art, where they unveiled a new structure of glass, characterized by a low melting point that would enable artists to use ceramic kilns as de facto glass furnaces. Prior to this, glassmaking required expensive equipment and technical skill, neither of which were available to the common artist or sculptor. The Littleton and Labino creation was a groundbreaking one for glass art, as artists now could work with the medium in their own studios. The innovation sparked such a surge in American glass art that it resulted in an official movement. Within two years, university courses were being offered in the art, and, by the '70s, approximately 100 university glass art programs had been instituted.

Realism within an Art Form allows us to celebrate the wonders of our physical world or the magic and mystery of our metaphysical selves within our world. A great challenge for me is merging elements of Realism and Organic Abstract forms together in such a manner that allows the works to take on a life of its own. The Millennium Eco System Report states that 15-20% of the Worlds Coral Reefs have been lost. One of my many passions is to inspire people to appreciate and realise "its the small creatures which make up our wonderful bio-diversity that sustains us all". My portrayal of wildlife is to give voice to those who can't speak as we do. Since December 2004 I have had about 3,500 people visit this site. Question Is anyone else working on a comparable level to my work in the world If anyone knows could you send me a quick e-mail or a web site?
