    Glass Art - Associates Degree
Salem Community College’s new glass art program provides the two-year degree-seeking student with a solid foundation in using glass as a sculptural material. The program stresses the importance of technical ability and critical thinking as the basic tenets for object-making.
The curriculum is structured such that serious students who wish to further their education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in glass will have the necessary credits, in most instances, to transfer to a four-year art school.
SCC is unique, as it is one of a small number of community colleges that offers instruction in glass, is one of a few higher education institutions that provides comprehensive classes in flameworking and kiln-casting, and is the only school that offers a degree with a focus on such processes. In addition to flameworking, the glass art curriculum introduces students to basic kiln-working techniques and cold-working processes; students also have the opportunity to take elective courses in kiln-casting and pate de verre and advanced flameworking techniques. Students begin their degree with foundation courses in three-dimensional design and drawing. The general degree is augmented by a basic liberal arts curriculum. Independent study is available to second year students who wish to further their individual explorations and researchwith a faculty mentor. As well, a variety of scholarship and internship opportunities give select motivated students invaluable off-campus experience.

A Murano Legacy: The Venetian Aesthetic in Contemporary American Glass from the Pacific Northwest
    by Tina Oldknow
    Glass in the Pacific Northwest
In a recent survey, it was estimated that over three hundred artists working in glass are living in the Pacific Northwest region between Portland, Oregon (just south of the Oregon-Washington border) and Bellingham, Washington (near the U.S.-Canada border). The center of this substantial activity is the city of Seattle and ninety kilometers to the north, Stanwood, where Pilchuck Glass School operates. Visitors to the Seattle area are constantly surprised by the volume of glassmaking going on, since it is an activity that most Americans regard as fairly unusual, even for artists.
"Seattle," Los Angeles artist Therman Statom once declared, "is the Venice of the West." But not just because glassmakers live there. Statom was also referring to the strong attraction of Pacific Northwest glass artists to the Venetian style, and particularly to the traditional glassworking techniques practiced on the Venetian island of Murano. Characteristics of the Venetian style in glass include the use of soda-lime glass, the preference for blown, classically proportioned forms and intense colors, and a flawless technique that may or may not involve complex internal or applied decoration. Less-tangible, but equally distinctive, is the feeling of the glass: a liquidity, delicacy, and a joie de vivre that is effortlessly elegant, spontaneous, and upbeat.

Like any musician, Milon Townsend understands the need for continuous repetition in order to master a technique. This tuba player turned flameworker inherited his discipline of practice from his early days as a musician, and used that discipline to master the art of flameworking.
Growing up, the young Townsend was also involved in theater and writing until he set his sights on flameworking. With a firm foothold in glass, he has begun to revisit his other passions; he’s teaching, writing two books and performing on audio cassette. His Body Language series requires the building of miniature “sets”, which resemble stage sets. He uses live models and is himself a model for some of his glass sculpture.
His first exposure to flameworking came in high school. He was fascinated with the material and process. At 18, Townsend traveled 30 countries, hitchhiking from France to Pakistan. He was heavily influenced by a French artisan with whom he lived, an entrepreneur who made shoes, jewelry, and other items to sell at market. When he returned home, he naturally and easily slipped into a similar pattern of making things and going to market. “It was a way of making a living outside of the 9 to 5 paycheck reality, which never really appealed to me”, Townsend says.

Let’s say you’re interested in fusing or kilnwork. Imagine if you could take a course that presented an overview of various techniques and processes, which enabled you to realize your goals in kilnformed glass. It wouldn’t matter if you were a beginning student or advanced. You would learn to make and use pattern bars. You would experiment with airbrushing. You would also get to work with micas, precious metal lusters, photo resist, Paradise paints, metal foils, even Potassa Sulfrata! You would prepare stainless steel molds for slumping, create bas relief's, and sandblast iridized glass to create design images. Daily slide shows of historical and contemporary work would inspire and guide you.
This might seem taunting and cruel if not for the fact that Brock Craig and Avery Anderson have developed such a course, and are now teaching sold-out workshops nationwide.
