24"H x 16"W x 9"D The use of glass as art is a tradition that can be traced back at least to Roman times. But over the past 30 years, the studio art-glass movement has become a revolution, liberating the medium of glass, the means of expression, and the artisan from the factory and its utilitarian focus. The American studio art-glass movement began in Wisconsin in 1962 under the guidance of Harvey Littleton . Littleton is a teacher and mentor, a legend among artist-craftsmen whose palette is fire. His influence has been felt throughout America and, through his students, throughout the world. One student, Dale Chihuly , creator of sweeping forms of dazzling blown glass, is not only one of America's best known living glass artists, but also the person most responsible for the surging attention being given to the studio art-glass movement. Harvey Littleton and Dale Chihuly's influence and inspiration quickly produced fruit in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In Santa Fe, the art-glass movement began in 1968 with the opening of

Art Review: 'Matter' is more proof that glass art matters Saturday, August 23, 2003 By Mary Thomas, Post-Gazette Art Critic With her engaging exhibition "Matter," Brooklyn artist Jill Reynolds not only shakes up standard expectations of what glass art looks like, but also throws into question isolate readings of scientific precepts. This glass skeleton by Jill Reynolds, titled "Gnomon" the word for the column on a sundial that casts the shadow adds a reminder of mortality to the passing of time. In the background, "Beauty," from 2000, comprises mirrored glass letters that tempt the viewer, in vain, to look for his reflection.

Reynolds was artist-in-residence earlier this year at the Pittsburgh Glass Center in Friendship, which has already reconfigured the face of glass for local audiences although it hasn't yet reached its second anniversary. Intent upon putting Pittsburgh on the map as a nationally and internationally important site for studio glass education and creation, the center also has in its mission the support of glass artists and the education of the public about contemporary glass through exhibitions and talks.

Art Preview: Glass Center's goal to foster creativity reflected in new installation Wednesday, May 15, 2002 By John Hayes, Post-Gazette Staff Writer Just a touch sets "The River" in motion. A wisp of breeze nudging the suspended mobile of oddly cut, hand-blown glass plates creates a ripple that grows to waves of light and shadow projected and reflected onto the walls, ceiling and floor of the Pittsburgh Glass Center gallery. As artist Robin Stanaway became familiar with Pittsburgh, she defined the city as a place that is "about motion and fluidity." With that idea in mind, she created "The River," a mobile of oddly cut, hand-blown glass plates. (Lake Fong, Post-Gazette) The installation by artist-in-residence Robin Stanaway, which opens to the public on Friday, is as much about light, glass and the physics of fluidity as it is about Stanaway's perception of her temporary Pittsburgh home.

    http://www.glass.co.nz/tarsitano.html
    Debbie Tarsitano, Master Glass Artist
A Brief History of The Tarsitano Studio.
Debbie Tarsitano has been developing encased flamework sculptural art for the last 25 years, and has become a world leader in the art of fine encased design. But Debbie did not start out as a glass artist. Her father, Delmo, was a fine art painter, and at an early age Debbie was attracted to art, greatly influenced by visits with her parents to the Metropolitian Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She studied painting throughout her childhood and later as an adult at Hofstra University, as a student of Art and Journalism. Debbie went on to study privately mastering oriental brush painting studying with Shigeo Ishi of Japan and Mrs. Sun Lee of MIT. In her early 20's Debbie and her father Delmo Tarsitao developed a passion for collecting glass and exploring it as an artistic medium. The two started Tarsitano Studio in the mid 1970s to pursue their love of glass art. Starting from scratch with a small torch and a card table in a room built onto their garage, the father-daughter team embarked on a journey to master the complexities of working with glass. At that time all glass artists learned as they worked, creating art by experimental trial and error because schools and universities did not yet teach flame work in their art programs. Glass artists also had difficulty finding the materials and equipment they needed to work; Debbie and Delmo overcame their share of such hardships. Delmo hand-fashioned most of the tools used in the studio. The two sought out glass supplies wherever they could find them, often from leftover stocks of failed glass factories. The early studio was a hodgepodge of some store-bought equipment and mostly hand-made tools not a pretty sight. Persistence, patience and most importantly, creativity and quality of design ruled the earliest years of their studio.

Even at that early stage Garry Nash was recognised by art glass collectors These took the glass art world by storm, with exhibitions in the USA, Japan,
    http://www.glass.co.nz/nash.htm
Garry Nash: New Zealand Glass Today
There is no long history of glass making traditions in New Zealand. During the nineteenth century several efforts were made to start a glassworks here, but all of them failed after only a short time. There was not even a successful bottle factory until the early part of the 20th century. Studio glass works, like Garry Nash's Auckland studio pictured above, sprang up in the mid to late 1970's, inspired by major artists from overseas.
Today's New Zealand glass artists enjoy a freedom from concepts and constraints tied to the past. As Garry Nash himself put it, "Working in the relative isolation of New Zealand unencumbered by rigid parochial European traditions of glass style and technique has allowed me the freedom to develop a unique style reflecting the New Zealand environment". Garry's work has always been innovative, exciting, and challenging. Over the past twenty five years, since he first committed himself fully to glass in 1979, Garry's work has been easy to recognise for his distinctive statements about modern life expressed in the brilliantly versatile medium of glass. Even before he owned his own furnace, Garry was making significant sculptural pieces from segments of glass combined together. Left above: "Moonrise over Ponsonby" Garry Nash, 1993.
