Beaded Beads
...
Dynamic Cuffs
I discovered beading in 1994. It was just at the beginning of what has turned out to be the beading renaissance of the 1990ies when The New Beadwork by Moss and Scherer was published and Bead and Button Magazine had just started publication. I enjoy the process of design and invention as much as wearing or displaying the product. I have learned a lot about using color in beads which is the hardest part of learning to bead. Colors in glass do not act the same way as they do in paint, fiber, or fabric. This website is a way to share the joy of beading with my cyber beading friends. A lot learning and teaching goes on between cyber beaders. I don't know if the current bead renaissance would have happened without the Internet.

As many people know, the Glass Bead Game is a term coined by Herman Hesse, in his book Magister Ludi, The Glass Bead Game (Available Through Seeker's Sanctum, OTHER ITEMS). Hesse explains the game as developing out of musicology and mathematics into a futuristic game woven as a symphony of knowledge and ideas. The game is more or less left to the reader’s imagination with a few hints at sources and influences but with no explanation of how it really works. We see the Glass Bead Game as a metaphor for a tradition of esoteric philosophical cosmology which has existed throughout every culture known to man. This philosophical cosmology is an expression of the fundamental system of order existent in the universe. These systems of cosmology are usually expressed in symbolic forms such as sacred geometry, alchemy, hieroglyphics, mythology, harmonics, arithmetic, astronomy, magic, and the like, but what they all have in common is a unified vision of the process of manifestation of the universe from the absolute to the relative. The Glass Bead Game is the artistic, philosophical or cosmological manipulation of the symbolic forms which express these systems of knowledge. These symbolic forms, or what we would call the Glass Beads represent a system of language unknown to all but a few who have searched for or been initiated into this rare and most valuable wisdom. Schwaller de Lubicz called this form of expression "symbolique", or the "Language of the Gods", or the "Language of the Birds". He explains it as a language that uses symbols as letters in an alphabet expressing a unknown language. When one is able to read this language, one can read Egyptian hieroglyphics, Medieval alchemical texts or Gothic cathedrals, and realize that they all say the same thing. He also informs us that there is no way to study "symbolique", but at the same time recommends sacred geometry as the best place to start.

http://www.haro-online.com/movies/shattered_glass.html
Shattered Glass In journalism, integrity is everything. How can people trust what a paper or magazine prints if said publication has a history of printing half-truths, or even lies? The issue of integrity is so important that when a publication's integrity is called into question, other publications take notice, but the general public doesn't seem to care that much. A few years ago, newspapers jumped all over the Los Angeles Times for the breakdown of the traditional wall between editorial and marketing in its coverage of the opening of "the" Staples Center. Earlier this year, the venerable New York Times came under fire (and later had a mini editorial housecleaning) after it was discovered that reporter Jayson Blair had fabricated many of the facts in his stories. This is eerily similar to Stephen Glass, the subject of Shattered Glass . Glass wrote for The New Republic , an influential political magazine. Glass fabricated a number of facts and stories and brought about his own downfall. Aside from all the ethical ramifications

    ROMAN GLASS
    Reflections on Cultural Change
    11 September 1999 - 9 January 2000
    INTRODUCTION
ROMAN GLASS: Reflections on Cultural Change is a traveling exhibition organized by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology that illustrates how the craft of glassmaking was influenced by historical events and changing social values in the Roman World.
SQUAT AMBER JUG with a trefoil mouth, thick turquoise handle,
and turquoise-colored coils applied beneath the rim and as a base ring.
4th century AD, possibly from Aleppo (Syria). 12.3 cm high.
Color combinations of turquoise on amber (as here) and dark blue on colorless
were particularly popular at that time. Glass, a material developed in the eastern Mediterranean region, largely came to Rome with its makers, Syrian and Judaean craftsmen, many of whom were slaves. Between the mid-first century BC and the early seventh century AD, Roman glassmaking was influenced not only by the changing values and tastes of the Roman world, but also by historical events. Many new techniques of glassmaking were introduced along the way. Each glass vessel, in its shape and decoration, is therefore a record of the times in which it was made.
    THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition breaks with the tradition of treating Roman glassware as an exceptional art form. Instead, it addresses how glass, in its mass production and mimicry of luxury items, held a relatively lowly position in the hierarchy of Roman material goods. As the glassmaking industry developed, glass like pottery came to be used in everyday life for all manner of domestic storage vessels and tableware, and for the small bottles that held the medicines, perfumes, and spices which were so much a part of the Roman affluent life.

Glass, Louis (1864 - 1936)
Louis Glass is one of the most important Danish composers of the late romantic period. He was a contemporary of Carl Nielsen, but there is a certain opposition between their musical styles due to the influence on Glass of Cesar Franck and Anton Bruckner. Besides Louis Glass was an outstanding pianist and teacher. Recommended Recording Sonata Nos. 1 and 2 / Fantasy
