E-Mail This Article Published on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 in the San Francisco Examiner Steep Rise In Corporate Power by Tamara Straus Not since the Gilded Age when John D. Rockefeller dominated the oil industry and J. P. Morgan served as America's unofficial central banker has there been so much talk about how big corporations threaten democracy. Al Gore got on the bandwagon this summer; wherever the vice president went he talked about the powerful "big tobacco, big oil, big polluters" versus the powerless people. And of course corporate power and its discontents were at the center of Ralph Nader's run for the presidency. A critic of corporate power will not occupy the White House in January, but it is doubtful he will see the issue go away. According to a September 2000 Business Week/Harris Poll, between 72 percent and 82 percent of Americans believe that "business has gained too much power over too many aspects of American life" and 74 percent to 82 percent believe that big companies have too much influence over "government policy, politicians, and policy-makers in Washington." Adding to this growing consensus is a new study, published by the Institute for Policy Studies, a think tank in Washington, DC. "Top 200: The Rise of Corporate Global Power" argues that the leading economic story of the last five years is one of rapid growth of the world's top 200 corporations and diminishment of government and citizen control.

E-Mail This Article Published on Friday, February 8, 2002 by Common Dreams The New Gilded Age by Marty Jezer For another writing project I am reading about the Gilded Age, that period after the Civil War when corporations first established themselves as the principle engines of economic growth and the United States became the most powerful industrial nation in the world. Reading about this period, between 1865 and 1896, is like reading about Enron, politics and corporate America. “Everywhere there was close alliance between corrupt financiers and corrupt public officials, the historian James Truslow Adams wrote about the Gilded Age. In his 217-page report on Enron’s internal management, William C. Powers, Dean of the University of Texas law school, condemned the senior management of the bankrupt company as well as its lawyers and accountants for “self-enrichment” at the expense of its shareholders, and for “over-reaching in a culture that appears to have encouraged pushing the limits.” Is Enron an exceptional case of corporate greed? Or is it a more generalized example of how corporate managers manipulate the legal system to enrich themselves at the expense of their shareholders and workers even as they run their company into the ground?

Moving Beyond Stereotypes of the Gilded Age

High school and college survey courses in American history often give relatively little attention to the Gilded Age compared with their coverage of other eras in the nation's past. Sandwiched between the Civil War and the Progressive Era, the period is frequently slighted by instructors who don't quite "get to it" or who rush through it to give more coverage to the seemingly more momentous early twentieth century. Unlike such phrases as the "Early National Period" or the "Age of Jackson," the "Gilded Age" is nearly unique as a period label in its connotation of denigration. The name itself evokes notions of crassness, superficiality, pretense, and fraud. As is well known, the term derives from the title of a novel published by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner in 1873. Responding to a dare from their wives, Twain and Warner wrote the book in four months, with the purpose, Twain said, of satirizing an "all-pervading speculativeness" in business and "shameful corruption" in politics ( ). Although the authors wrote in the broadest sort of caricature, twentieth-century scholars adopted their title as a fitting descriptor for the period. This was unfortunate, for the term's insinuation of selfishness and sham has masked the period's enormous complexity and significance, and it has led to a facile dismissal of the era as somehow unworthy of serious study. In reality, of course, the United States experienced a profound transformation during these years, with lasting implications for the century that followed.

    Zeb Vance

North Carolina's Civil War Governor and Gilded Age Political Leader
    by Gordon B. McKinney
    Preface
When I first started working on Zeb Vance as a research topic, I had an opportunity to share some of my ideas with a group of senior citizens at a meeting in Black Mountain, North Carolina. During the discussion period that followed my presentation, one woman made several very insightful comments. After the end of the formal program, she came forward and introduced herself as Mrs. Glenn Tucker, the wife of the best scholarly biographer of Vance. She shared with me some of the challenges that she and her husband had faced in working on Zeb Vance: Champion of Personal Freedom , a work that has stood as the finest study of Vance's life for nearly four decades.[1] Unfortunately, the challenges that the Tuckers faced forced them to neglect the period after the Civil War. Since the publication of Zeb Vance , the amount of scholarship on the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Gilded Age has expanded enormously. Making use of new analytical approaches and ideas, including gender analysis and modernization theory, scholars have developed much different perceptions of topics such as the role that race played in shaping the United States during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The result is the need for a new biography of Zebulon Vance that places him in the context of historians' rapidly changing perceptions of the American South. Many of the interpretations in this study that differ from those offered by the Tuckers were first presented by other scholars in articles and monographs. I have sought to convey the breadth and depth of this exciting new work as accurately as possible. Where I disagree with some scholars on a point, I have tried to explain why in some detail, using primary sources to support my assertions.

In the summer of 1896 William Jennings Bryan delivered his famous "Cross of Gold" speech to the delegates assembled at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In his remarks the Nebraskan accepted his party's nomination to run for the presidency. He also scored the nation's established economic interests, as represented by the onerous gold standard. Like many other Americans who worked with their hands or hailed from rural districts, Bryan believed that American political institutions had turned their back upon farmers and workers. His campaign sought to reorient these institutions toward a more egalitarian course. Bryan's sensational oration placed Chicago, Illinois at the top of the news that day. But the city and state had already become fixtures in the public life of the Gilded Age (1866-1896). In 1871 the Great Chicago Fire reminded Americans that large cities were becoming important parts of their society, and faced their own dangers.
