Part I: The Reconstruction of American Society, 1865-1920s Lecture 01
Reconstructing the Nation

America has been split apart by three major wars: in the 1770's the American Revolution; in the 1970's the Vietnam War; and, in the middle of this period, the Civil War. Each war has dramatically changed the generation engaged in battles as well as the generations that followed. Lecture #01 will examine the repercussions of the Civil War, its effects on the American people, and the agreements and disagreements within the nation over the meanings of "Reconstruction."
See Calendar for course outline and lecture topics

Lecture 02

The "New South"
By the late 1860s, some Southerners were already calling for a more diversified economy cotton was no longer "king." Increasingly there was a move from farm to factory, and many people encouraged industrialization in the South and an increased capital investment in the Southern economy from outside sources. This lecture explores the economic transformation and the racial politics of the "New" South after the Civil War.

First Second , before we embark on a readings course, I will need to have a list of the books that you have read in your courses. Working with your list, we can make sensible choices that will both appeal to your intellectual interests and fill the blanks. Once I have your bibliography, we will meet and draw up an individualized readings list. For my purposes (and yours as well), you will be required to submit six, brief (1-2 typed page) papers that reflect on the sort of questions listed above. In other words, you might write on the methodological contribution of a particular book or article or on the strengths and weaknesses of a book or article. You are particularly encouraged, however, to use these papers to make connections among different readings. You need to think about how one book relates to another in terms of historiography, methodology, and general approach. The papers are due at the meeting at which you are discussing the particular readings on which you have written. The timing of the six papers is up to you, but every other week would seem to make sense. The general pattern is to meet every other week. T he first United States tour of sculpture by the American Renaissance sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens will be on view at the Wichita Art Museum April 17, 2005 - June 12, 2005. Organized by the Trust for Museum Exhibitions (TME), Augustus Saint-Gaudens: American Sculptor of the Gilded Age will feature seventy-five of the sculptor's most famous works including reductions of major outdoor commissions, full-sized works cast in bronze, marble and plaster, portrait reliefs, decorative objects and coins an outstanding retrospective of the master's work. The exhibition's Wichita venue is made possible, in part, by the Friends of the Wichita Art Museum, Inc. "Saint-Gaudens is one of those sculptors whose works of art are more famous than his name. For example, the artist's portraits of Diana or Abraham Lincoln are icons of American sculpture that we have seen so frequently that we don't stop to think enough about them," explains Charles K. Steiner, Museum director. "This magnificent exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to become reacquainted with the artist and his contribution to the development of realism in 19th-century American sculpture."

Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) is generally regarded as the foremost American sculptor of the 19th century. Many of his works are landmarks in cities like New York or Boston, his works can be found in the most major museums and, while many might not immediately recognize his name, almost everyone is familiar with at least a few of his works. Although he is usually acclaimed for his monumental works of sculpture, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, from early in his career, created a variety of work in other media and sizes including cameos, mural paintings, decorative panels and stained glass. But, it was his sculptures that firmly established his reputation and his popularity that, in turn, attracted a large number of clients.
