Analyzes current issues and the influences that are related to these issues. Examines how decisions are made concerning policies and issues; integrates and reinforces social studies skills. Government An in-depth study of the American political systems. This course focuses on the foundation, principles, and structure of the American system of government. Examines the role of political parties, social factors as they related to the role of the citizen, and analyzes the decision-making process that is a part of the system of American political behavior. Note: This course meets the state’s Citizenship requirement for graduation. Economics
Pre-requisite: Geog./Civics/U.S. History Economics is a mandated course for graduation. Informed decision-making is the responsibility of each citizen. Most important issues contain economic content and trade offs. (i.e. environment, energy, poverty, resource allocation, etc.) To understand these issues, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of key economic concepts and to use the process of analysis. Individual and group decision-making will be explored.

American Studies Certificate Program
To receive the American Studies Certificate a student must complete 18 credit hours from the listing of classes below. International Exchange Students who are American Studies students at their home university, or who have taken American culture and society classes in the past, may be able to transfer classes from their home universities' to count for credit towards classes that are required for the American Studies Certificate Program. Students will work with the American Studies Certificate advisor to determine transferability of credit. Students will need to submit descriptions of classes taken at their home university for evaluation. International Exchange Students attending NAU for one year will be able to complete the program in one year of study; a typical year of study at full-time equals 24 credit hours. In addition, a student attending NAU for one semester, who is able to transfer sufficient credit towards the American Studies Certificate requirements, may be able to finish the requirements in one semester of study. A minimum number of credits per semester is 12 credits but students may take as many as 18 credit hours per semester. Students whose degree at their home university is American Studies may find many of the courses listed below applicable to meeting their home degree requirements while also fulfilling requirements for the NAU American Studies Certficate.
