It is not studied jointly with any other Principal subject but is a complete Honours course in itself. Keele has one of the largest and most diverse American Studies programmes in the country, which provides unparalleled scope for developing knowledge and understanding across a wide range of subjects and disciplines. The United States occupies a pivotal position in the global community. The influence of its popular culture can be seen everywhere, from rock and roll and jazz music to Hollywood films, to MacDonald's and Coca Cola. Further, as the only remaining superpower and the largest industrialised economy, the United States plays a key role in both international politics and the world economy. America's pre-eminent position in the world today inspires both intense admiration and anger. No matter what your opinions of the U.S., if you want to understand current events and culture, you must understand America.

In addition course objectives include improvement in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and study skills. American Government This college preparatory course in American government is a study of the American political process. The primary goal is to present basic information that young citizens need for an understanding of their government - how it operates and their relationship to it. Recognizing that a knowledge of fact is not sufficient to guarantee good citizenship, an emphasis is placed on the need for patriotism, civic-mindedness, loyalty to nation and community, and respect for the law. To achieve this far-reaching goal the students will learn the importance of carrying out the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. They will be encouraged to develop positive attitudes toward their responsibilities as members of many groups - family, school, community, state, and nation.
