Gibraltar's citizens solid as a rock against shaky politicians
By Isambard Wilkinson in Gibraltar November 8 2002 Hook, line and sinker . . . but the people of Gibraltar are not falling for it as the political leaders of Britain and Spain suggest that shared sovereignty is in their interests. Photo: AFP In the shadow of the Rock of Gibraltar the inhabitants of the 300-year-old British colony were in festive mood as they prepared to defy London and Madrid in a referendum on joint sovereignty. Union flags fluttered and posters declared "Do not give Spain hope. Vote no". Peter Caruana, Gibraltar's Chief Minister, predicted that the voters would "reject massively" the principle of joint sovereignty." It was "a dangerous concept with no successful application anywhere in the history of the world". Yesterday's referendum was called by the Gibraltar Government to pre-empt an agreement in principle between London and Madrid. Spain and Britain have enraged Gibraltarians by saying the referendum has no legitimacy.

Photographs may have been altered in order to enhance the stupidity involved, and the facts presented may have been altered for the purposes of satire. People are included on this website because they believe they know better than its residents "What is good for the future of Gibraltar", they are therefore setting themselves up as pompous targets for mirth and ridicule. If you feel any of the material is offensive, please tell us about it before anyone else. Remember, it is not as offensive as the people featured have been to us, and a website is a more civilised protest than throwing custard pies, bricks, petrol bombs or nuclear warheads. Gibraltar wants good, neighbourly, European relations with Spain based on reasonable dialogue and mutual respect. Spain is obliged to respect our EU and other rights, instead of ignoring them and persecuting Gibraltarians for the desire to retain their identity.

National Symbols
Arms of Gibraltar Arms consisting of a triple-towered castle with a golden key dependent from the centre were granted to "The Most Loyal City of Gibraltar" by Ferdinand and Isabella in the year 1502. The original grant on vellum is now in the archives of the Municipality of San Roque.
The words usually found underneath the Arms are "Montis Insignia Calpe" , meaning "Badge of the Rock of Gibraltar" and these words also appear on the Colours of the Suffolk Regiment, which Regiment obtained permission to have the Arms of Gibraltar inscribed on their Colours in recognition of the gallant part they played in the Siege of Gibraltar. The words "Nulli Expugnabilis Hosti" meaning "Conquered By No Enemy" also occasionally appear under the Arms of Gibraltar, having been copied from the Official Seal of the Colony which consists of a picture of the Rock with these words underneath.
In 1869, a Circular despatch was sent to all Colonies requesting that a sketch of the Arms or Badge to be adorned in the centre of the Union Jack used by the Governor should be supplied to the Colonial Office. The sketch which was submitted by this Government on the 1 st January 1870, depicted the triple towered castle with dependent key with the words "Montis Insignia Calpe" underneath. This design was approved by the then Secretary of State and concurred in by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty.

Gibraltar has the same status as Bermuda Falkland Islands etc. They used to be called Crown Colonies but are now United Kingdom Dependent Territories . Gibraltar was never a Dominion. That is an almost obsolete term that used to be used in general for independent countries in the Commonwealth that retained the British monarch as Head of State. I think that only Canada has retained that title as such. The

Numbering range information
January 2003 - 9567 access from Spain extended
Ken Westmoreland writes regarding Spain numbering for Gibraltar: "Spain has made an official decree extending the current use of 9567 as the access code to Gibraltar from Spain. This appeared in the [11 January 2003] weekend's Boletin Official de Estado which had previously set New Year as the cut off time for that code and the introduction of the new 8563 code (soon to be applied to all Cadiz) to Gibraltar with and extra 70 000 numbers. The Resolution by the Ministry of Science and Technology in Madrid recognises that the implementation of the earlier bulletin would have in effect cut off communications since Gibraltar had not made the changes to use these numbers. The 9567 code has been extended indefinitely."
January 2002 - Gibraltar-Spain numbering dispute
The government of Gibraltar continues to battle Spain's treatment of telephone numbering matters. Spain uses a portion of its own numbering plan to access Gibraltar telephone numbers, rather than using the +350 country code. This practice complicates expansion of telephone numbering in Gibraltar, since any new number allocations would need to be accessible from Spain.
