The Office is situated in the Rond Point Schuman, at the very heart of EU Brussels. The Office is charged with keeping the Government informed, on a timely basis, of all EU legislative and policy initiatives which have an impact in Gibraltar. To this effect, the Office produces regular monitoring reports for Government's attention, has established close links with the Community institutions and a close working relationship with the United Kingdom Permanent Representation to the EU. The Office is run by Michael Llamas who, in his capacity as a barrister, is also charged with ensuring that the Office provides Government with legal advice on a wide variety of European Community matters. In this manner, the Office served as the platform for Gibraltar's successful challenge in the European Court of Human Rights against its exclusion from electoral rights to the European Parliament. Gibraltar. Who should decide our future? The British Government are proposing to do a sovereignty deal with Spain against the wishes of the Gibraltarians.

GIBRALTAR SEEKS YOUR SUPPORT
NO DEALS WITH SPAIN AGAINST THE WISHES OF THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR
18th March 2002, Practically the whole population of Gibraltar demonstrates. Why?
ANSWER: The British Government proposes to strike a deal with Spain affecting Gibraltar's sovereignty and political rights against the wishes of the Government and people of Gibraltar, WHICH EVEN IF REJECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR IN REFERENDUM WILL STAY ON THE TABLE, TO THE POLITICAL PREJUDICE OF GIBRALTAR, AS THE AGREED POSITION BETWEEN THE UK AND SPAIN. What is Gibraltar?
  • British since 1704 ! Homeland of the people of Gibraltar Financially self-sufficient - costing the UK tax payer nothing A strategic British military base free of charge to the UK taxpayer Self-governing; secure; politically stable; economically prosperous and part of the EU Seven million visitors a year Strategic commercial ship repair facility Biggest ship bunkering port in Mediterranean A successful international finance centre regulated to UK and EU standards A loyal friend to Britain in good and bad times, in peace and war, for 300 years.

  • THE KEY POINTS
    • The people of Gibraltar, like all colonial peoples before them, enjoy the inalienable right to self-determination, that is, the right to decide their own future.
Bilateral Anglo-Spanish agreements about the principles applicable to Gibraltar’s future, sovereignty and status, entered into against the wishes of the people of Gibraltar betrays Gibraltarians’ right to self-determination.
Spain has failed to accept, and refuses to accept, the principle of consent in respect of the future of Gibraltar (unlike the Republic of Ireland in the case of Northern Ireland).
As the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons has recognised and lamented in a comprehensive report, Spain is allowed by HMG and the EU to get away with impunity with systematic breaches of Gibraltar’s EU rights and her own EU obligations in her behaviour towards Gibraltar. Now these very long-standing breaches are being offered as reasons to justify a sovereignty deal that the people of Gibraltar do not want. The future of Gibraltar is secure, stable and prosperous without the need for a sovereignty deal with Spain against our wishes.
