Primates
Once we recovered from the shock of Darwin's suggestion of a common evolutionary path, parallels have been drawn between humans and apes. For a while, we were compared with such species as gorillas or baboons, where a dominant male controls a harem of females. There was also a forlorn attempt to compare humans with the monogamous gibbons, ignoring the fact that gibbons, though forming permanent pair bonds, are solitary creatures. Most recently, genetic evidence has shown a close relationship with the chimpanzee, and confirmed the existence of some common ancestor of both apes and humans. We will therefore concentrate on primates, which comprise some 200 species, and are extremely varied in their size and behaviour. In general, primates, including humans, are tree dwelling, tropical mammals, quadrupedal, with all four feet adapted for grasping. They have good eyesight, and generally have acute hearing, with a brain relative to their body size larger than most other species. Their sense of smell however, apart from the prosimians, seems to be less acute. Nearly all are vegetarians, most species mainly relying on fruit, although sometimes supplemented by insects or meat. The Prosimians are thought to be representative of the earliest primates of some 60 million years ago, very small in size, nocturnal, insect eating creatures. A short while later, the anthropoids appeared - independently, it is thought, in what was to become America and Africa. These were the ancestors of the new world and old world monkeys - an interesting example of parallel evolution.

The white-cheeked gibbon or otherwise known as the black gibbon is a very acrobatic animal living in the treetops of South East Asia. This ape is the smallest of the lesser apes which also includes chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. The gibbon is rather a unique primate. The white-cheeked gibbon belongs to the kingdom Animalia .(1) To be in the kingdom Animalia you must be multicellular, to be multicellular you must have more than one cell. The amoeba is an example of unicellular organism. To be unicellular, you only have one cell. Also to be in the kingdom Animalia, the animal must be heterotrophic. To be heterotrophic you cannot make your own food.(2) Plants on the other hand, make their own food by photosynthesis so they are called autotrophic(2). Photosynthesis is the process by which the plant cells make carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water with the help of chlorophyll and light that combine together.(3) And the final characteristic to be Animalia is to have cell membranes with no cell walls, the thin membrane that forms the outer surface of the living part of the cell.(2) The phylum the white-cheeked gibbon is in is Chordata The gibbon is included in the class Mammalia White-cheeked gibbon are placed in the order of Primates . To be classified as a primate they must have these characteristics: shortened rostrum, a snout or looks like a beak; forwardly directed orbits; a hallux, (the big toe(3)); a pollex, (thumb(3)); highly mobile radius; forelimb; tibia, inner and thickest bone of the leg; fibula, which is the outer and thinner bone in the foreleg in the hind; ulna in the forelimb; have a clavicle, which is the collarbone; first toe with a nail; stomach; incisors (teeth); canines, sometimes present, premolars; hypocone; and arboreal which means away from the mouth.(6)

Order: Primates
Suborder: Haplorhini
Infraorder: Catarrhini
Family: Hylobatidae Physical Description
The 12 species of gibbons are classified, referring to their size, as lesser apes. They exhibit many of the general characteristics of primates: flat faces, stereoscopic vision, enlarged brain size, grasping hands and feet, and opposable digits; and many specific characteristics of apes: broad chest, full shoulder rotation, no tail, and arms longer than legs. Gibbons do not build nests like the great apes. They sleep sitting up with their arms wrapped around their knees and their head tucked into their lap. They have ischial callosities (fleshy, nerveless pads attached to the hip bones, a characteristic otherwise found only in Old World monkeys).

The Plight of the World's Rarest Gibbon
Bawangling National Nature Reserve lies in southwestern Hainan Island, China and is believed to be the last and only refuge in the world for the Hainan gibbon Nomascus nasutus hainanus , an endemic subspecies of the rarest ape in the world, the eastern black-crested gibbon. A complete census was carried out in the humid October 2003 by local reserve staff, with the participation of experts from Hainan Forestry Bureau, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, local institutes and FFI. After six days training in gibbon census techniques provided by Dr. Thomas Geissmann, 37 participants in 15 teams were dispatched into their respective one-square kilometre grids of forest. Each team was required to record gibbon vocalization at the same time each day from the listening post within its grid. Gibbons were located by sound triangulation, and followed whenever possible. The 12-day survey revealed that just 13 confirmed individuals, including two social groups and two solitary males, are now restricted to a small patch of old-growth seasonal rainforest of about 400 ha. The reason for the restricted range of the gibbons is not known. Evidence to date indicates that gibbons regularly give birth to infants, which survive to become sub-adults. However, no gibbon pairs have established new territories in Bawangling since 1987. Illegal hunting and degraded habitat were considered to be two priority threats to the survival of gibbons. Hunting by local Li and Miao (Hmong) minority villagers continues inside the reserve. With the cooperation of local partners, FFI-China is responding with an emergency programme of patrolling, habitat mapping and community awareness building.

gibbons and siamangs
This family contains 1 genus, Hylobates, and approximately 11 species (some authorities recognize a second genus, Symphalangus) . They are found only in the tropical forests of southeastern Asia, including on Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and other islands as well as the mainland. These apes are of medium size (3.9-12.7 kg). They lack tails. Their forearms are remarkably long, and both forefeet and hindfeet are long and thin. The forefeet have a deep cleft between first and second digits. The pelage of these apes is usually black, gray, or brownish, often with white markings on hands, feet, and facial region. Ischial callosities are present. Some gibbons and siamangs have an enlarged throat sac, which inflates and serves as a resonating chamber when the animals call. This structure is enormous in a few species, equalling the size of the animal's head. The skulls of hylobatids resemble those of hominids, with very short rostra, enlarged braincases, and large orbits that face forward. Hylobatds are catarrhine primates; that is, their nostrils are close together and face forward and slightly downward. They lack cheek pouches and their stomach is not sacculated. Their teeth are similar to those of hominids. The molars are bunodont and lack lophs. The upper molars usually have a cingulum, which is sometimes large. The canines are prominent (more so than in most hominids) but not sexually dimorphic. The dental formula is 2/2, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3 = 32.

Most have grasping hands, flat nails (instead of claws), and a large brain. Primate mothers carry their young on their bodies until they are weaned; the ties between mother and baby are very strong. There are about 200 species of primates, including monkeys, lemurs, chimps, humans, and others. Primates are divided into three groups:
  • Tree shrews
    • Tupaiidae: Tree shrews
  • Prosimians
    • Cheirogaleidae: Dwarf lemurs

Body length is 44-63 cm (just under three feet). Average weight is 5.5 kg (14 pounds). Males and females are similar. Color is variable. In Thailand there are two colors, not related to sex- very dark brown (black) or light buff. They all have a pronounced and complete white face ring, white hands and feet. Male song is simple with quaver-hoots, female song is longer, rising to climax, about 18 seconds long. (Populations from N. Sumatra: brown/red/buff, song 17 seconds long.) Fur is extremely dense, providing protection from rain. One square centimeter of skin has over 2,000 individual hairs (13,125 per sq. in.) compared to 900 hairs per sq. cm. for Old World monkeys. Arms are very long , fingers are long and hook-like, and thumbs are thin and somewhat reduced. No tail. Ischial callosities are present.

An unidentified Cambodian holds a recently killed gibbon.
DEY AMBIL, Cambodia (AP) - Within eyesight of a sign urging "Don't sell wildlife", a roadside vendor is peddling four slow lorises - little primates with sad luminous eyes - to be burned alive and churned into purported Chinese medicine. A gibbon, says Sem Sovan, can be ordered for US$200 and delivered while customers wait at his ramshackle hut, squirming with snakes, mynah birds and other illegal "products" from nearby Kirirom National Park. Once an Eden for primates, Cambodia, along with neighbouring Vietnam and Laos, is being rapidly emptied of these creatures by meat poachers, traditional medicine merchants and villagers encroaching on their ranges. Remarkably, not a single species of primates, man's closest relative in the animal kingdom, was lost in the last century. But global extinction is looming, and it is likely to occur first in Indochina, says Frank Momberg of Fauna and Flora International.
