Description
. Males and females are strikingly different in appearance with males almost completely black, but sometimes with white or buff cheeks, and females a golden or buff colour with variable black patches, including a black streak on the head . The common name of this species comes from the tuft of longer fur on the crown of the head . A variety of calls are produced, which are amplified with the aid of a throat sac below the chin; males and females engage in duets, in which males grunt, squeal and whistle whilst females sing rising notes and twitter

42. Benny Gibbon

Nobody seems to enjoy their run ins with the health care industry these days. A trip to the hospital can be frustrating and scary. Throw a painful injury, shifting facilities, and a specialist into the mix and anybody would be rattled. But Benny Gibbon managed to keep in the swing of things recently.
It seemed like a regular day in Tropic World Asia . But keepers thought something was amiss as they watched the white-cheeked gibbons . Benny, the oldest male of the group was moving around from tree to tree, but he was favoring his right arm.
Gibbons are small apes native to Southeast Asia, where they can be seen swinging gracefully from treetop to treetop in the rainforest canopy. Gibbons have long arms and hands that are slightly hook-shaped. They stretch their arms out and swoop from branch to branch, a type of movement called “brachiation.” Gibbons can cover more than 20 feet-and sometimes more than 30 feet-in a single swing. They can move faster through the trees than any other primate in the world. Knowing this, Benny’s behavior struck keepers as very unusual. Though they had not seen anything happen on exhibit or in holding, they began monitoring him closely and called in zoo veterinarians to consult.
Brookfield Zoo Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Tom Meehan noticed that, “the arm looked normal, but it wasn’t being used.” Sharing the keepers’ concern, vets brought Benny to the zoo’s Animal Hospital where the problem was quickly diagnosed. X-rays showed that Benny had broken his left radius, one of two long bones in the forearm.

Common Name: White-handed gibbon Scientific Name: Hylobates lar See gibbons on the islands of the Primate Expedition Cruise Description: These lesser apes weigh between 6 and 8 kg. Coat colors vary from a light buff color to black with all colors having white hands and feet. Thumbs are not connected to the palm but originate freely from the wrist providing great flexibility. The thumbs are rarely used during swinging. The hand is used much more like a hook. The method is good as gibbons are the most agile of all living primates. They move about by the hand over hand swinging method known as brachiation. Casual leaps in excess of 3 meters are common during movement and great leaps of 9 meters or more have been reported. On the ground or on wide branches, gibbons typically walk upright with the hands over the head. Melodic calls are made regularly. The whooping songs are typically heard in the morning hours although there is variation in this. Range: Thailand, Malaysian peninsula, and northern Sumatra.

Gibbon Taxonomy to be Utilized by Breeding Facilities
Alan Mootnick Abstract Introduction Gibbons ( Hylobates ) are small, arboreal apes, inhabiting the tropical and semi-deciduous forests of Asia. They are distributed from Assam and Bangladesh in the northwest, eastward to Yunnan, Indochina, Thailand and the Malaysian Peninsula, and southward to the Indonesian and Malaysian islands. Adult gibbons weigh 5-15 kg and have long arms relative to their body size. Gibbons' pelage colors may vary within and between species, ranging from black to browns, grays, and buffs. With the exception of the siamang ( Hylobates syndactylus ), there is little sexual dimorphism in size, but some species do exhibit sex-specific color patterns. Gibbon systematics traditionally have been controversial and confusing. One of the purposes of zoos or other captive facilities is to breed gibbons so that species and subspecies diversity is retained. But the accurate identification of an individual gibbon may be complicated by 1) the variety of coat colors within some gibbon species, 2) the existence of different colors for the two sexes in some gibbon species, 3) the occurrence of coat color changes at sexual maturity for some gibbon species, 4) the impact of malnutrition and housing (e.g. indoors only or in full sunlight) on coloration, 5) the ease with which some gibbon species' songs are confused, 6) the difficulty with which some gibbon subspecies are distinguished, 7) and a dearth of information on the individual gibbon's origins who were confiscated. Given these problems, it is not surprising that zoos and other breeding facilities may encounter difficulties in the identification of gibbons.

Abstract
This paper describes the foraging environmental enrichment programs designed to stimulate natural behavior of gorillas, chimpanzees and fat-tailed lemurs in Taipei Zoo. These experiments have resulted in the extension of their feeding time and increase their social interaction.
Introduction
Environment enrichment is an important and adopted zoo management tool for the captive primates in modern zoos. In order to promote animal conservation education, we invited Dr Hunthius, the conservation and science director of the American Zoo Association, with his group of animal behavior researchers to conduct a workshop ‘The application of behavior study in animal management’ in 1992. A series of programs were initiated to enrich the animal behavior. With the operation of some key elements within the captive environment, including foraging and management design, the natural behavior of the animals was stimulated to reduce the occurrence of abnormal behavior. This report is the study results of primates.

Prusiner et al. JMB 258813-261996 Variations in the PrP gene sequences of apes Variations in the PrP gene sequences of old-world monkeys For the seven new-world monkey species studied, 34 to 39 nucleotide exchanges were found resulting in seven to ten amino acid substitutions compared to humans (Table 1). Within this group, the PrP gene of the spider monkey showed the greatest sequence identity with human PrP when the deletions were not considered. It is noteworthy that fewer exchanges were present around the first putative helical region than in old-world monkeys, with the important exception of position 112 (M : V). Group specific variations were seen at codon 170, where the marmoset, tamarin and spider monkeys have an S : N substitution that is identical with that found in three subspecies of hamsters. At codon 182, the squirrel monkey has an I : V substitution that lies within the third putative a-helical region; at codon 205, the Aotes monkey has an M : I substitution that lies within the fourth putative a-helical region and is the same as that found in sheep. Variations in octarepeat structures Clustering of non-human primate variations in the PrP gene Phylogenetic relationships deduced from PrP sequences Distribution of variant amino acids Approximately one third of the residues in PrP were found to vary among mammals (Table 2). The distribution of variant amino acids was examined for different regions of PrP. Within the primates, most of the variation in the PrP sequence (18%) is within the N-terminal region (codons 1 to 90) while the variation in the C-terminal region (codons 221 to 253) was considerably lower (3%). In contrast, variations in the N and C-terminal regions for all species were 38% and 36%, respectively. The variation in the central region of PrP (codons 91 to 220) was 12% for residues in primates and 22% for all species. Combining the data for all species, 52% of the residues varied within the N-terminal (codons 1 to 22) and the C-terminal (codons 232 to 253) peptides that are cleaved off as mature PrP C is formed. The same peptides in primates varied at only 7% of the residues.

Reconstruction of chromosomal rearrangements during New World monkey (Platyrrhini) karyotype evolution
By conclusion, New World monkeys appear to be of monophyletic origin since they share several derived chromosome forms. The ancestral karyotype could be reconstructed and major phylogenetic landmarks are now known. Cebinae and some Pithecinae retained chromosome forms similar to the ancestral Platyrrhini karyotype whereas Callithrichinae and Atelinae chromosome forms are clearly derived. Significant contributions could be made concerning the clarification of controversial taxonomic classification of several species.

Scientists warn that our closest relatives, the great apes, could be extinct in 20 years' time. The commercial bushmeat trade, human population growth, the tropical hardwood industry, war, deforestation and habitat loss all threaten their survival. There are probably fewer than 100,000 gorillas in world. The most endangered are the eastern or mountain gorillas. There are around 670 left, a slight increase from 620 in 1989, thanks to conservation efforts. Two isolated mountain gorilla populations remain, one in the Bwindi National Park, south-west Uganda, and the other situated near the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda. Following the Rwandan civil war, a million refugees settled in camps on the edge of the Virunga National Park. Besides being a disaster for the people involved, this crisis put considerable pressure on natural resources and disrupted wildlife. Gorilla conservation programmes focus on rural development activities that promote the sound use of natural resources. Gorilla-based tourism, for example, provides a valuable source of revenue and is carefully monitored.

Carolus Linnaeus used the name, meaning 'chiefs', in 1758. The majority of primates are adapted for life in trees, but many are ground dwelling. Some principally feed on leaves, fruits and different vegetable matter, while others are insectivorous; many eat fruits and leaves but also hunt live prey. Primates range in size from about 30 cm in marmosets, weighing less than a kilogram, to gorillas, which stand almost 200 cm high, and may weigh as much as 350 kg. Hylobates hoolock ), is found in the forests of Sylhet, Chittagong, and the Chittagong Hill Tracts. This species is also found in Assam in India. Of the 180 or so known species of recent primates, 25 are found in South Asia. Bangladesh has 10 species in 4 families. Some of them are threatened. Slow Loris Nycticebus coucang A member of the family Loridae. Face resembles that of lemur. Body dark ashy-grey or grey-brown with a darker band down the middle of the back; beneath lighter grey. Eyes owl-like, circled with dark patches. Head rounded, ear and tail very small. Head-body length 26-40 cm; bulky, weight 1000-1600 g; generally solitary, nocturnal and arboreal. Movements slow, climbs readily with firm grips. Spends days curled in tree hollows. Feeds on leaves and shoots of trees, fruits, insects, bird eggs and young birds. A single young is born after a gestation period of c. 3 months. Occurs in the mixed evergreen forests of the country and also in deciduous forests of northern hilly areas.
