There is very little national land and not many large land lots held by private individuals. The government has tried to regulate the tribal ownershipthey have a government office managing the communal affairs and then all revenue is distributed to the community which includes all residents of the area, even non-tribal members. Concessions are granted to both logging companies and to some mills. Most are 25 year schedules, some up to 50. The concessions are not decided upon by the local tribes (unlike Fiji where a tribe can completely restrict access to their land), but by the government. While in reality, most companies wanting to log have to get some type of permission from the local people and they need to respect certain areas as "holy" or "private," a company technically could log an area even without the owners' permission if they have been granted the concession by the government.

Mr Barimah was speaking at the inauguration of all the 17 Districts in the Eastern Region into the Sixth European Union/Ghana Government Micro-project Programme in Koforidua on Monday.
The Programme, which comprises community-based projects would impact significantly on poverty reduction, since majority of them were rural focused and therefore, tend to reduce poverty. Under the programme, the European Union (EU) was providing a grant of 25 million Euros to support development projects in 77 districts in six regions including Eastern Region in the country.
