Geography
Ghana is located on West Africa's Gulf of Guinea only a few degrees north of the Equator. Half of the country lies less than 152 meters (500ft) above sea level, and the highest point is 883 meters (2,900ft). The 537 km (334miles) coastline is mostly a low, sandy shore backed by plains and scrub and intersected by several rivers and streams, most of which are navigable only by canoe. A tropical rain forest belt, broken by heavily forested hills and many streams and rivers, extends northward from the shore, near the Cote d'Ivoire frontier. This area, known as the "Ashanti", produces most of the country's cocoa, minerals, and timber. North of this belt, the country varies from 91-396 meters (300-1,300ft) above sea level and is covered by low bush, park-like savannah, and grassy plains.
The climate is tropical. The eastern coastal belt is warm and comparatively dry; the south-west corner, hot and humid; and the north, hot and dry. There are two distinct rainy seasons in the south May-June and August-September; in the north, the rainy seasons tend to merge. A dry, north-easterly wind, the harmattan, blows in January and February. Annual rainfall in the coastal zone averages 83cm (33inches).

Structured around on-site visits, readings and in-field instruction, this course focuses on the geography of health services and economic development in Ghana seeking to understand how underdevelopment impacts health services and health care. Challenges of resource exploitation and environmental pollution, the informal economic sector and economic development policies including structural adjustment are examined through visits to rural and urban markets, a gold mine, tourist facilities, industrial facilities. Visits to indigenous healers, rural clinics, a University Teaching Hospital and a Private Clinic helps to unravel the link between economy, culture, sanitation and health services. In dealing with economy and health care, our goal is to understand WHO gets WHAT, WHERE and WHY? British Isles
This 6 credit-hour course gives students direct experience in applying geographical field techniques in a foreign setting - the British Isles and Ireland. The field school will be centered on five base sites - Plymouth (England), Cork (Ireland), Galway (Ireland), Aberystwyth (Wales) and Edinburgh (Scotland).

The Art of Ancient Mali Geography P resent-day Mali, at nearly twice the size of Texas, is the largest country in West Africa. Mali is bordered by seven other countries: Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Mauritania. Most of the northern half of Mali falls within the largest desert on the planet, the Sahara. The central section of Mali is made up of semi-arid land that is part of a larger region known as the Sahel. Sahel is an Arabic word meaning, “shore,” although, in this case, it can be thought of as the shore of the desert rather than the ocean. The Sahel is nearly 3,000 miles long and from 200 to 700 miles wide in a span across the continent of Africa. It is an area that is gradually being taken over by the southward creep of the Sahara Desert. In the southwestern region of Mali, rainfall and rivers are more plentiful and the climate is slightly more hospitable. Mali's most important geographic feature is the Niger River. The Niger River stretches over 2,500 miles through four countries: Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria. It arches up alongside the Sahara until it turns south towards the sea. Mali sits at the top of this arc, where the river spreads out and opens into an inland delta. Only about 2 percent of Mali is arable. In this dry climate, it is the Niger River that provides the main source of subsistence, providing fish, drinking water, and water for farming. Growing food in this region depends on the annual flooding of the Niger River, which has traditionally provided fertile plains along its banks.

T he republic of Ghana, derives its name from the ancient Ghana Empire in the Western Sudan which fell in the 11th century. Ghana is the first black African colony to gain independence and until independence from the British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, Ghana was known as the Gold Coast. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive and others came later. The remnants of around 30 castles can be seen along the coast of Ghana. The castles bear witness to four centuries of the presence of Europeans trading in ivory, gold, and slaves. At the height of the slave trade, there were more than 60 strongholds along the coast which is a mere 350 miles long. These castles were built by the Dutch, Prussians, French, and British. Many of them changed hands.
The capital of Ghana was moved from Cape Coast to Accra by the British in 1876. See independence square at Accra Ghana.
