Low plains stretch across the southern part of the country. To their north lie three regionsthe Ashanti Uplands, the Akwapim-Togo Ranges, and the Volta Basin. The fifth region, the high plains, occupies the northern and northwestern sector of the country. Like most West African countries, Ghana has no natural harbors. Because strong surf pounds the shoreline, two artificial harbors were built at Takoradi and Tema (the latter completed in 1961) to accommodate Ghana's shipping needs.

http://www.geographia.com/ghana/
Exploring Ghana Exploring Ghana Africa Homepage Geographia Home M uch of the attraction of Ghana is based upon its legacy as the center of the gold, ivory, and slave trade during the 17th and 18th centuries, when the mighty Ashanti empire held sway here. However, Ghana also possesses one of the best game reserves in West Africa, a multitude of good beaches, and plenty of hospitality. Ghana is one of the five African nations along the northern coastline of the Gulf of Guinea. It is bordered on the west by Cote d'Ivoire, on the north by Burkina Faso, and on the east by Togo. The country consists mostly of low-lying savannah regions, with a central belt of forest. Ghana's distinguishing geographic feature is the Volta River, on which was built the Akosombo dam in 1964. The damming of the Volta created the enormous Lake Volta, which occupies a sizeable portion of Ghana's southeastern territory. Lake Volta is also the site of Kujani National Park, though Ghana's best-known park is Mole, located in the north. Unfortunately, neither Lake Volta nor the river itself have yet been developed for touringalthough lake cruises are offered, the great majority of water traffic consists of cargo ships.

Ghana - Geography and environment
Photo: Toby Adamson/Oxfam Lake Volta, which dominates Ghana’s south-eastern territory, is the world’s largest artificial lake. It was created when the Akosombo hydro-electric dam was built in 1964. The north of the country differs greatly in climate from the south. Southern Ghana is much wetter, has high temperatures all year round, and has a very short dry season; lush forests and all kind of crops grow throughout the year. The climate gets harsher the further north one goes, and drought is a big problem. People rely on raising hardy breeds of animals which feed on the savannah grasses, and growing "drought resistant" crops that can survive on little water such as sorghum and millet.
Environment
Photo: Toby Adamson/Oxfam The southern region of Ghana is covered with dense rainforest, partially cleared to plant cocoa, coffee, banana, and oil palm trees. Wide savannah grasslands extend to the north. The soil is rich in gold, diamonds, manganese, and bauxite. The main environmental problems are fertile land turning to desert in the north-west, and widespread deforestation in the south.
