Country Information on Ghana
Terrain
Ghana is a relatively flat country except for two ranges of hills, one on the eastern boundary and the other in the west. The coast is sandy and merges into the coastal plain, which is dissected by several rivers. These rivers are generally not navigable, except for canoes. In the west the terrain consists of densely wooded hills and is dissected by a network of rivers.
In the north there is savannah, which is drained by the Black and the White Volta. Both rivers meet and become the Volta, which flows south between the two hilly areas towards the sea. The Akosombo Dam located in the country's east is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. The country's highest elevation is Mount Afadjato (884 m) located in the eastern hills.

See How to Edit and Style and How-to for help, or this article's talk page Here are some aspects of the culture of Ghana. [weak first paragraph] Perhaps the most visible (and most marketable) cultural contribution from modern Ghana is Kente cloth, which is widely recognized and valued for its colors and symbolism. Kente cloth is made by skilled Ghanaian weavers, and the major weaving centers in and around Kumasi (Bonwire is known as the home of Kente, though areas of Volta Region also lay claim to the title) are full of weavers throwing their shuttles back and forth as they make long strips of Kente. These strips can then be sewn together to form the larger wraps which are worn by some Ghanaian chiefs and are purchased by tourists in Accra and Kumasi. The colors and patterns of the Kente are carefully chosen by the weaver and the wearer. Kente is one of the symbols of the Ghanaian chieftaincy , which remains strong throughout the country, particularly in the areas populated by members of the culturally- and politically-dominant Ashanti tribe. The Ashanti's chief, known as the Asantehene, is perhaps the most revered individual in the country. Like other Ghanaian chiefs, he wears bright Kente, gold bracelets, rings and amulets, and is always accompanied by numerous ornate umbrellas (which are also a symbol of the chieftaincy itself). The most sacred symbol of the Ashanti people is the Golden Stool, a small golden throne in which the spirit of the people is said to reside. It is kept in safekeeping in Kumasi, the cultural capital of the Ashanti people and the seat of the Asantehene's palace. Though the chieftaincy across Ghana has been weakened by allegations of corruption and cooperation with colonial oppression, it remains a very vital institution in Ghana.

Its origin is traced to the Asante people of Ghana and the Gyaman people of Cote' d'lvoire (Ivory Coast). However, the production and use of Adinkra have come to be more associated with the Asante people than any other group of people. Around the 19th Century, the Asante people developed their unique art of adinkra printing. Adinkra cloths were made and used exclusively by the royalty and spiritual leaders for very important sacred ceremonies and rituals. In modern times, however, adinkra cloths are used for a wide range of social activities. In addition to its sacred usage, it is also used to make clothing for such special occasions as festivals, church-going, weddings, naming ceremonies and initiation rites. Today, designers use adinkra symbols in creating a wide range of products including clothing accessories, interior decoration, packages and book covers. Each of the motifs that make up the corpus of adinkra symbolism has a name and meaning derived either from a proverb, a historical event, human attitude, animal behavior, plant life, forms and shapes of inanimate and man-made objects. These are graphically rendered in stylized geometric shapes. Meanings of motifs may be categorized as follows: Aesthetics, Ethics, Human Relations and Religious concepts. In its totality, adinkra symbolism is a visual representation of social thought relating to the history, philosophy and religious beliefs of the Akan peoples of Ghana and Cote' d'lvoire.

T he republic of Ghana, derives its name from the ancient Ghana Empire in the Western Sudan which fell in the 11th century. Ghana is the first black African colony to gain independence and until independence from the British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, Ghana was known as the Gold Coast. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive and others came later. The remnants of around 30 castles can be seen along the coast of Ghana. The castles bear witness to four centuries of the presence of Europeans trading in ivory, gold, and slaves. At the height of the slave trade, there were more than 60 strongholds along the coast which is a mere 350 miles long. These castles were built by the Dutch, Prussians, French, and British. Many of them changed hands.
The capital of Ghana was moved from Cape Coast to Accra by the British in 1876. See independence square at Accra Ghana.

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. The Ashanti people of Ghana established one of the wealthiest, most advanced kingdoms in West Africa. When the first Europeans arrived in the area 500 years ago, they marveled at the elaborate Ashanti gold artwork and jewelry, naming the area the Gold Coast. Despite long periods of European influence and colonization, Ghana has maintained a strong sense of identity, as evidenced by the variety of traditional and modern art, dance, and music that flourishes throughout the country.

The Institute of Aquatic Biology will test improved pond tilapia culture systems. Project support will enable the Institute of Aquatic Biology (IAB) to develop the capacity to produce and culture all-male (sex-reversed) tilapias on a field pilot scale, and to develop propagation of Clarias catfishes to be cultured in combination with tilapias. Improved tilapia culture systems will be compared to those presently in use, on an experimental station and in farmers' ponds, and results will be disseminated to farmers. Fish farmers, farmers with sites favorable for pond culture, and fish consumers will benefit. The project is one of a series of African aquaculture projects funded by IDRC and linked through network activities.

Religion
Although no exact figures on religious distribution have been provided since the 1960 census, experts believe that about 41 percent of the population adheres to Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, or independent Christian faiths; 20 percent to Islam; and most of the remainder to traditional African religions. Most Protestants belong to Methodist, Presbyterian, or Anglican denominations. A growing number of Christians belong to independent African churches that are usually organized as spiritual or Pentecostal churches. Most Ghanaian Muslims are orthodox Sunnis, and a small percentage are members of the Ahmadiyya sect. The main characteristics of traditional religion in Ghana include expressed belief in the power of a Supreme Being, family ancestors, lesser gods, witches, and a host of spiritual beings.
