This program is an extension of the course AAAS 485.03, Ghana: West African Culture, Society and History to be offered by the Department of African American and African Studies during Spring 2005. In this course, students will explore the history of Ghana through lectures, group discussions, films, and other related activities. Students will critically examine conflicts and struggles arising from West Africa's role in the slave trade and its post-colonial condition. Immediately following Spring Quarter examinations, students will travel to Ghana for three weeks to visit and study sites of social, cultural, and historical importance. The Location
West Africa has long been famous for its rich agricultural lands and minerals, as well as its many historical sites. The history of slavery and the many Atlantic slave trade sites dotting its coastline makes West Africa one of the most essential locations in the study of the early modern world. By focusing on one nationGhanastudents will have a "case study" in their intensive analysis of the historical trends and contemporary realities evident throughout West Africa.

    Name
Upon achieving independence from the United Kingdom , the name "Ghana" was chosen for the new nation—a reference to the Ghana Empire of earlier centuries. This name is mostly symbolic, as the ancient Empire of Ghana was located to the north and west of current-day Ghana. The name was adopted as a reference to the descendants of the ancient Empire of Ghana who migrated south and east and currently reside in Ghana. edit

The Ashanti tribe of the Akan are the largest tribe in Ghana and one of the few matrilineal societies in West Africa. Once renown for the splendour and wealth of their rulers, they are most famous today for their craft work, particularly their hand-carved stools and fertility dolls and their colourful kente cloth. Kente cloth is woven in bright, narrow strips with complex patterns; it's usually made from cotton and is always woven outdoors, exclusively by men.

    Rooted in Ancient Akan Society

Akan, a "pure" heritage, is one of the most ancient cultures in Africa. These African people live predominately in the countries of Ghana and Ivory Coast with many descendants now living in Europe and the USA.
Before the 13th century, the Akan peoples (ancestors of the Asante Tribe) migrated from other parts of Africa into the forest belt of present-day Ghana. Family bands established small states in the hilly country in the neighborhood of modern Kumasi. This early migration was likely related to the opening of trade routes established to move gold throughout the region. It was not until the end of the 17th century, however, that the grand Asante Kingdom emerged in the central forest region of Ghana, when several small states united under the Chief of Kumasi.
Much of what is known about ancient Akan customs was passed on in oral histories, which have survived for several hundred years. Many of the objects that have been recovered through archaeological excavations are still produced in modified form among contemporary Akan peoples. In 1957, after a period of internal self-government, the Gold Coast became the first African colony to achieve independence under the charismatic leadership of Kwame Nkrumah.

Thick soups are the mainstay of Ghanaian cuisine and are usually eaten with potatoes or rice. Another staple meal is Fufu, which consists of cassava, yam, or plantain that has been cooked, pureed, and mashed into a ball. Fufu is a ubiquitous and much-loved staple throughout most of West Africa. It can be topped with a fiery sauce or served as the bland accompaniment to a main dish. Fufu is traditionally made with cassava, but it can be prepared with everything from rice or yams, to instant mashed potatoes. On street stalls you can find plenty of foods to stave off your hunger pangs. A popular dessert is fried plantains seasoned with chilli pepper and ginger. This is usually washed down with a refreshing non-alcoholic drink made of corn called askenkee One of the more common foods served on ceremonial occasions in Ghana is oto . It is used as an initiation meal prior to the events of the day. Oto is always accompanied by hard-boiled eggs. For official ceremonial purposes

Ghana is situated on the southern coast of the West African bulge and is bordered to the east by Togo, to the west by the Ivory Coast, to the south by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and northwest by Burkina Fasso.
The coastline consists mostly of a low sandy, foreshore behind which stretches the coastal plain, except in the west where the forest comes down to the sea. The forest belt, which extends northward from the western coast and then eastward into Ashanti for about 170 miles, is broken up into heavily wooded hills and steep ridges. North of the forest is undulating savanna drained by the Black Volta and White Volta rivers, which join and flow south to the sea through a narrow gap in the hills. Ghana's highest point is 2,9000 feet in a range of hills on the eastern border. Apart from the Volta, only the Pra and the Ankobra rivers permanently pierce the sand dunes, most of the other rivers terminate in brackish lagoons. There are no natural harbours.
