Yellowstone National Park is the most diverse in thermal activity, renowned for the world's largest and most spectacular display of geysers, hot springs, and stem vents. Some 200 to 250 geysers spout off each year, a greater concentration of geysers than anywhere else in the world. The park also has thousands of hot springs and steam vents. Then soak in the Hot Springs while your guide prepares a delicious lunch. more Madison Waterfall These hydrothermal features are located in places where rainwater and snowmelt can easily sink into the ground, becoming superheated by underlying magma to create an eruption on the surface again. That is why most geysers and hot springs are in flat-bottomed valleys between lava flows. Geysers and hot springs work off the transfer of heat from brine, which is salty water, 1.5 to 3 miles deep. When the molten rock heats the overlying brine the hot brine carries heat upward by convection, which heats the overlying, fresh groundwater circulating close to the surface. Highly fractured, porous rocks allow the groundwater to flow easily to the surface, creating hot springs. On the other hand, when there is no release of pressure the deeper groundwater becomes superheated, exceeding the boiling point. When enough pressure builds up, the superheated water overcomes the weight and pressure of cooler groundwater above it, allowing steam and hot water to burst, gushing out of a geyser.

Geyser
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Clepsydra Geyser in Yellowstone A geyser is a type of hot spring that erupts periodically, ejecting a column of hot water and steam into the air (Bryan 1995). The name geyser comes from Geysir , the name of an erupting spring at Haukadalur, Iceland ; that name, in turn, comes from the verb gj³sa , "to gush". The formation of geysers requires a favourable hydrogeology which exists in only a few places on Earth, and so they are fairly rare phenomena. About 1000 exist worldwide, with about half of these in Yellowstone National Park USA Glennon, J.A. ). Geyser eruptive activity may change or cease due to ongoing mineral deposition within the geyser plumbing, exchange of functions with nearby hot springs, earthquake influences, and human intervention (Bryan, T.S. 1995). Erupting fountains of liquefied nitrogen have been observed on Neptune 's moon Triton . These phenomena are also often referred to as geysers . On Triton, the geysers appear to be driven by solar heating instead of geothermal energy. The nitrogen , liquefied by a kind of greenhouse effect

The Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces have been a popular feature in Yellowstone since the early stagecoach routes up the Yellowstone River Valley. The Terraces, first described by the 1871 Hayden Survey, were given the name of White Mountain Hot Spring, even though they were well known and named before then. The step-like terraces form as heated water moves along the Morris-Mammoth Fault. The hot water carries dissolved calcium and bicarbonate to the surface of the terraces where pressure lessens. Carbon dioxide then escapes as gas and the carbonate combines with calcium to precipitate as travertine. The Mammoth Terraces are constantly changing shape and color. Springs which were active one to five years ago may be dry and lifeless now, yet activity may later resume. Along with changes of thermal activity come changes in color. Fresh travertine is bright white in color and as it weathers it changes to gray. Bright colored cyanobacteria and algae mats which were dependent upon a stable temperature and a flow of water also change as the microorganisms die creating a stark, bleak landscape.

Y ellowstone is a country teeming with an estimated 10,000 thermal features. Of these only three percent are geysers. The rest are steaming pools, hissing fumaroles, bubbling mud pots or warm seeps. Most of Yellowstone's geysers are small, and sputter and splash, barely reaching ten feet in height. Only six grand geysers, those which erupt 100 feet or higher on a predictable daily basis, exist. Old Faithful, the most famous of these, erupts once approximately every 45 to 90 minutes. Beneath the thermal basins lie the mechanisms which control these features. The most essential element is magma—underground molten rock. No one knows exactly how close to the surface this body of magma lies. Geologists believe the earth's crust is less than 40 miles thick in Yellowstone compared to 90 miles under most other land areas. Intruded into this thinner crust. like bubbles, are magma intrusions—also known as plutons. These intrusions are typically at a depth of four to ten miles. In most regions of the earth's crust the temperature gradient averages about 1.4°F per 100 feet. A test well drilled at Norris Geyser Basin during the late 1920s revealed a temperature of 401 °F at a depth of 265 feet. Thus the ground temperature gradient at this point is an astonishing 123°F per 100 feet.

Y ellowstone N ational P ark is home to some 10,000 thermal features, over 500 hundred of which are geysers. In fact, Yellowstone contains the majority of the worlds geysers. Within Yellowstone's thermal features can be seen the product of millions of years of geology at work. Much of Yellowstone sits inside an ancient volcanic caldera (the exploded crater of a volcano). The last major caldera forming eruption occurred 600,000 years ago. For hundreds of thousands of years following that, subsequent lava flows slowly filled in most of the caldera. Even now, in some places, nearly molten rock resides as little as 2-5 miles below the surface. Heat from the volcanic activity makes its presence known by heating ground water and creating the thermal features we now see. The four basic types of thermal features present in the Park are

Is there any better reward, after a long hiking day, than to relax in a pool of hot water, softening the muscles and enjoying spectacular panorama ? What if the conscience tells you, you deserve it ? Hot springs and pools have been used for hygienic purposes, but man can also enjoy by looking and listening, even smelling. Since the colonisation of Iceland, bathing in pools has been a tradition, often in a social and political context (naked man is without arms), rather than hygienic. Maybe not surprising, since many natural pools are not very "clean". Sand and algae may stick to the body, specially when bathing with garments on (any serious bathtaker does so naked, when possible).
Still today there are too many people which can´t see warm water without starting to dig, make dams or rolling stones. Therefore we don´t dare describing particular pools or geothermal zones, except for the most known. We´ll try to treat the subject generally; mostly what to avoid, how to behave when in geothermal zones, along with tips and tricks on how to use the presence of natural geothermal sources when hiking and camping. Many of the best known natural pools are made by local farmers, which have been gathering their sheep in the area. Some are simple dams but some are neatly constructed of stone, near the source(s).
