How to Use Postcards From America
Below is a brief description of the various components that make up the Postcards from America website and how you may use these elements in the classroom. THE WEEKLY POSTCARDS
We tour a state a week and send two " Live-at-the-Scene TM " postcards each week. The first postcard features a scenic view, the other a view of native wildlife, such as an animal, bird, fish, insect, or plant that is either unique to that state, or prevalent in that area. Classroom Activity: The scenic photograph and the accompanying photo caption on the postcard, as well as our hand-written personal message on the reverse side, can be used as a launching off point for further classroom discussions. For example, you may ask your class to locate the State-of-the-Week on a map and find clues as to why that area of the country would have that type of scenery and support that kind of wildlife. Tracking Progress, Getting Parents Involved
By Kim Byrum Skinner Nationally, the health of the arts in education remains unclear. In a country of nearly 16,000 school districts and 112,000 schools, national data remains scarce. According to National Education Association (NEA) estimates, just 59 percent of public elementary schools have an art teacher within their buildings. Among high schools, roughly 95 percent to 99 percent offer art programs. Tracking the Arts
According to a 1999 National Art Education Association (NAEA) survey, "The High School Transcript Study," 58 percent of high school graduates had taken visual arts. Furthermore, the number of states demanding a high school arts exit requirement, in some variation, rose from one (Missouri) to 33 since 1983. "That's pretty good growth," says Tom Hatfield, executive director of the NAEA, based in Reston, Va. "That's more than half the states saying they offer it. So if they have those [exit] requirements, then you can make a reasonable conclusion that kids are engaged in the study of art and music at the high school level." The College Board's "Profile of College-Bound Seniors National Report" reveals that national SAT scores in 2000, 2001 and 2002 averaged higher for students involved in the arts than for those without arts coursework.

Teaching our child that it's just as wonderful to give as it is to receive is almost never easy. We have tons of art supplies, but not enough cuddly animals and bags. We are looking for canvas, cloth, or knitted bags to put the art supplies and cuddly animals in. We are also looking for handmade knitted, crocheted, and sewn cuddly animals, dolls, puppets, and other handmade toys. There is no greater way to show you care than to make a cuddly toy or beautiful bag for a sick or needy child. We have collected Knitting and Sewing Patterns for all of you to help. Not all of these patterns are easy, but we have marked off in red patterns that children can do with help of a parent. Read this article in Spanish After more than thirty years of teaching, there is still no experience quite like when a child has "broken the code" Using the Orton-Gillingham approach ensures me of that thrill over and over again. It can take from two to five years for a student to become a proficient reader. Dyslexia is different for everyone. Some students experience an "ah-ha" in the middle of a lesson and become readers after a relatively short time of exposure to the multisensory techniques of the approach. Others become readers in a quieter, less obvious way - one sequential step at a time. Either way, students enter the Resource Room as non-readers and leave as readers. The amount of time it takes is the amount of time it takes. Part of the Orton-Gillingham approach is to go "as fast as you can but as slow as you need to". There is a saying I borrowed from an adult with dyslexia which states "It is not how fast we learn that counts. It is learning that counts." I have adopted this for the Resource Room. I had it printed on my stationery. The Orton-Gillingham approach does more than teach reading, handwriting, spelling and expressive writing. The approach helps children and adults experience the success that has eluded then for so many years. They gain the understanding that they are smart and talented. This realization may take years but it does happen. In my Resource Room there is another sign that says "Mistake is not a bad word." Orton-Gillingham gives students the tools for reading, writing, and spelling. The acquisition of these tools raises the feeling of self worth. Repair of the damage done to the psyche is as important as using the Orton-Gillingham approach. Drop in on one of the message boards where adult dyslexics are talking to each other and you will understand the long lasting devastation of not being taught the way you need to learn.

The dinner honored child care teachers receiving a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education through the T.E.A.C.H. scholarship since 2002. The dinner also recognized center directors who sponsored their staff in the T.E.A.C.H. program. Kaplan Early Learning Company sponsored the venue. "I’d like to take a moment to extend my congratulations to our newest crop of graduates who have earned their degrees in early childhood education through the T.E.A.C.H. initiative," stated Estelle Richman, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. "We all know that T.E.A.C.H. not only helps put teachers through school, it helps keep schools open.
