Germany prepares for Sunday's crucial election
In this story:
September 26, 1998
Web posted at: 9:38 a.m. EDT (1338 GMT) BONN, Germany (CNN ) German voters were getting ready for Sunday's parliamentary election, which could mark a turning point in the country's post-war history as the balloting may spell the end of Chancellor Helmut Kohl's 16 years of conservative-oriented government. An opinion poll taken on Friday, the last day of campaigning, showed the standing of the front-runners unchanged, with Kohl's Christian Democrats trailing the opposition Social Democrats of Gerhard Schroeder by 38 to 42 votes. Since the four-percent difference is well within the statistical margin of error of the poll, the vote is seen as a cliffhanger. However, it is widely expected to lead to a coalition government since neither of the two main parties Kohl's CDU/CSU and Schroeder's SPD are likely to win a majority of votes.

Germany bans 'pro-Hamas' charity
AACHEN, Germany (CNN) Germany has shut down a charity it says supported the radical Islamic group Hamas and sent money to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers. German Interior Minister Otto Schilly announced the closure of the offices of Al-Aqsa in the city of Aachen on Monday, and the freezing of the group's assets. "The Al-Aqsa supports violence as a means to push through politics. It supports an organisation outside Germany which is responsible for many murder attacks, and it is against the idea of understanding among nations," Schilly said. "Under the cover of legal humanitarian aims, the Al-Aqsa supports violence and terror in the Middle East. "It has promised so-called 'martyr families' in Palestine, especially the families of suicide bombers, financial support. This is aimed at taking away financial worries from suicide bombers regarding their families. "At times, the charity has sent money via other innocent seeming organisations to the terror organisation Hamas," Schilly said.

St. Boniface and the Conversion of Germany
The conversion of Germany to Christianity took place in a number of stages. Some of the later ones, in which Charlemagne forcibly baptized whole peoples were violent. Earlier, however, Anglo-Saxon monks, working in close association with the papacy, spread Christianity. Among them was St. Boniface (ca. 680-755), from Devon, who played a major part in the conversion of Germany. These three documents illustrate aspects of the both the work of conversion and activism of the popes
Letter of Pope Gregory II to Boniface, 719
Gregory, Servant of the Servants of God, to the Devout Priest Boniface Knowing that thou hast from childhood been devoted to sacred letters, and that thou hast labored to reveal to unbelieving people the mystery of faith, . . - we decree in the name of the indivisible Trinity, through the unshaken authority of Peter, chief of the apostles, whose doctrine it is our charge to teach, and whose holy see is in our keeping, that, since thou seemest to glow with the salvation-bringing fire which our Lord came to send upon the earth, thou shalt hasten to whatsoever tribes are lingering in the error of unbelief, and shalt institute the rites of the kingdom of God.... And we desire thee to establish the discipline of the sacraments, according to the observance of our holy apostolic see.
Oath of Boniface to the Papacy, 722

The compensation bill is still incalculable
As Germany's flood waters reach historic peaks, the country's authorities are scrambling to cope with the economic effects of the crisis. Germany's finance ministry announced that it was considering a range of tax breaks for flood victims - a move that would see current government aid commitments of 385m euros (£246m; $378m) multiplied many times over. At the same time, the labour ministry said it was drafting in some 5,000 of the country's 4 million unemployed to help in affected areas, so far mainly in the east and south of the country. But economists predict that the German economy, a sluggish performer so far this year, could in fact be modestly boosted by the reconstruction effort. There is also speculation that the European Union may allow the country some leeway in the budget deficit limits agreed for the eurozone. 'Billions of euros' Estimates on the likely cost of the German floods are still vague.

This has been the case, however, only since the reunification of Germany in 1990. Before that, responsibility lay with the Party (SED) of the German Democratic Republic. Sorbian is also popularly referred to as Wendish and is divided into written Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian. It is from the Indo-European (Indo-Germanic) language family, belonging to the Western branch of the Slavic subgroup. Because of the German-speaking environment, numerous Germanisms have entered Sorbian vocabulary and syntax. The main dialects are the Bautzen, Kamenz and Cottbus dialects. The language is written in the Roman alphabet and diacritical marks are used in the spelling. The alphabet can be divided into Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian. According to random surveys in nine villages in the Sorbian-speaking area in 1987 and subsequent projections, it may be assumed that some 15 000 of the total of 489 000 Sorbs are now using Sorbian on a daily basis. This means that the number of Sorbian speakers has fallen by some 15 000 to 20 000 over the past 20 to 30 years.

    May Day skirmishes in Germany
German neo-Nazis clash with police outside a train station in Frankfurt BERLIN, Germany Trouble spilled over into May Day protests across the country after violent clashes left two people hospitalised in Berlin the night before. An estimated 5,000 police officers were on the streets in Frankfurt trying to marshall marches by far right and leftists on Wednesday. Scuffles broke out between officers and neo-Nazis who were gathering for a rally after the demonstrators refused to subject themselves to body checks en route to the march, The Associated Press reported. Police said they used truncheons to subdue the marchers, who shouted "We are the people" and anti-U.S. slogans. Counter-demonstrators tried to block Frankfurt streets with burning tyres.  QUICKVOTE Do street protests do more harm than good?
