E-Mail This Article Published on Sunday, March 16, 2003 by CommonDreams.org When Democracy Failed: The Warnings of History by Thom Hartmann The 70th anniversary wasn't noticed in the United States, and was barely reported in the corporate media. But the Germans remembered well that fateful day seventy years ago - February 27, 1933. They commemorated the anniversary by joining in demonstrations for peace that mobilized citizens all across the world. It started when the government, in the midst of a worldwide economic crisis, received reports of an imminent terrorist attack. A foreign ideologue had launched feeble attacks on a few famous buildings, but the media largely ignored his relatively small efforts. The intelligence services knew, however, that the odds were he would eventually succeed. (Historians are still arguing whether or not rogue elements in the intelligence service helped the terrorist; the most recent research implies they did not.) But the warnings of investigators were ignored at the highest levels, in part because the government was distracted; the man who claimed to be the nation's leader had not been elected by a majority vote and the majority of citizens claimed he had no right to the powers he coveted. He was a simpleton, some said, a cartoon character of a man who saw things in black-and-white terms and didn't have the intellect to understand the subtleties of running a nation in a complex and internationalist world. His coarse use of language - reflecting his political roots in a southernmost state - and his simplistic and often-inflammatory nationalistic rhetoric offended the aristocrats, foreign leaders, and the well-educated elite in the government and media. And, as a young man, he'd joined a secret society with an occult-sounding name and bizarre initiation rituals that involved skulls and human bones.

113. Germany And Belgium 2001
Photographs and descriptions of travels starting in Wurzburg, germany, proceeding down the Romantic Road and Rhine before ending in Belgium.

Our trip took us to Wurzburg and down the "romantic road" and then over to the middle Rhine area, then the Mosel river including Trier and finally to Ghent and Bruges in Belgium. We both really enjoyed the variety of this trip and we lucked out with excellent weather on the whole. I took a lot of photographs. The ones you see here are not the best I took, they were just the easiest to get online as they came from rolls of film that were scanned by the photo developer I used for the last rolls I sent in. I have written a narrative for my own journal and some of the photos below will have excerpts from that narrative used as a description of the photos.
Cologne (in German this city is called Koeln)Cathedral. One of the most famous cathedrals in Europe. This photo was taken on the first night we were in Europe. Here is a description from our visit the next day to part of the cathedral: The view from the tower of the church was said to be great so the next thing we did was go back and pay to climb the 500+ (yep.that was the highest tower we climbed in Europe this time) steps to the top. The hardest part about climbing all these steps is that it's a spiral stone staircase and one side is very narrow and yet the staircase takes two way traffic. And these places always draw large groups of school children so climbing under such conditions if far from fun. Once on the top we did have a very nice view looking in all directions from a narrow walkway.

The Education System
German public education makes it possible for qualified kids to study up to university level, regardless of their families' financial status. The German education system is different in many ways from the ones in Anglo-Saxon countries, but it produces high- performing students. Although education is a function of the federal states, and there are differences from state to state, some generalizations are possible. Efforts have been made in the postwar years to make the system more democratic, though some feel that the changes don't go far enough. It's nevertheless possible for a child with the right academic ability to study right up to the university level regardless of the financial status of the family.

Cologne Metropolis of arts, music, media and of course the world famous carnival. Agrippina, wife of roman Emperor Claudius, founded in 38BC the "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium" Because of its location on the Rhine river and at a major crossroad of European trade routes, Cologne grew quickly in the 19th century, to the largest city in Germany. Right in the middle of Europe It's really worth making an effort to visit this city, not least for the famous music and club scene. Though almost completely destroyed in WWII, Cologne was quickly rebuilt, and many of its old churches and monuments have been meticulously restored.
