Since that memorable day at Wembley, it took England until Euro 2000 to beat Germany in a competitive match again. Indeed in 15 post-1966 meetings, England have triumphed only three times. But English fans would hand back those victories and a thousand more in return for the two defeats which have prevented them reaching two major football finals during the 1990s.

PEOPLE HAVE DWELLED for thousands of years in the territory now occupied by the Federal Republic of Germany. The first significant written account of this area's inhabitants is Germania , written about A.D. 98 by the Roman historian Tacitus. The Germanic tribes he describes are believed to have come from Scandinavia to Germany about 100 B.C., perhaps induced to migrate by overpopulation. The Germanic tribes living to the west of the Rhine River and south of the Main River were soon subdued by the Romans and incorporated into the Roman Empire. Tribes living to the east and north of these rivers remained free but had more or less friendly relations with the Romans for several centuries. Beginning in the fourth century A.D., new westward migrations of eastern peoples caused the Germanic tribes to move into the Roman Empire, which by the late fifth century ceased to exist. One of the largest Germanic tribes, the Franks, came to control the territory that was to become France and much of what is now western Germany and Italy. In A.D. 800 their ruler, Charlemagne, was crowned in Rome by the pope as emperor of all of this territory. Because of its vastness, Charlemagne's empire split into three kingdoms within two generations, the inhabitants of the West Frankish Kingdom speaking an early form of French and those in the East Frankish Kingdom speaking an early form of German. The tribes of the eastern kingdomFranconians, Saxons, Bavarians, Swabians, and several otherswere ruled by descendants of Charlemagne until 911, when they elected a Franconian, Conrad I, to be their king. Some historians regard Conrad's election as the beginning of what can properly be considered German history.

The olympic organization in Germany was one of the first which came into being after the revival of the Olympic Games of the antiquity by Baron de Coubertin at the end of the last century. Eighteen months after the constitution of the International Olympic Committee on 23rd June 1894 in Paris the Committee for the Participation of Germany in the Olympic Games 1896 in Athens had been founded on 13th December 1895 in Berlin by the chemist Dr. Willibald

    History
Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, extended the Frankish Empire from 768 and was the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 800 to 814, which included what is now modern-day Germany. In 1871 Otto von Bismarck founded the German Empire and became its first chancellor. From 1815 Germany had been split into small individual states after the fall of the first German Empire. After the end of the First World War (1914-1918), the empire was followed by the Weimar Republic, the first German democracy. Under the auspices of France, Britain and the USA, the Federal Republic of Germany was founded on the 23rd of May 1949 in the three western zones. The new FRG was a parliamentary democracy with a written constitution known as the Basic Law ("Grundgesetz"). As the first federal chancellor, Konrad Adenauer had an enormous influence on the founding years of the FRG. A flood of East German refugees since August 1989 and the so-called "Monday Demonstrations" for democratic reform in East Germany culminated in the fall of the Berlin Wall on the 9th of November 1989. The first free elections in the GDR took place in March 1990. Monetary, Economic and Social Union was established between East and West Germany on the 2nd of July 1990 and, on the 3rd of October 1990, Germany was reunited. Chancellor Helmut Kohl played a substantial role in the reunification of Germany and the growing together of Europe. National Anthem

National Anthem The lyricist Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798-1874) wrote the "Lied der Deutschen" (Song of the Germans) in August 1841. The melody is based on a composition from Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) written in 1796. On 11 August 1922, the first social democratic government officially introduced the "Lied der Deutschen" as the national anthem. Today, the third verse is sung at official occasions.
