The Americanisation of the Culture of Weimar Germany By: Malte Goebel For: Marline Otte Course: HIS 496S, Ethnicity in 20th Century Popular Culture Date: April 7th, 1999
In this essay, I will examine the influence of American thoughts and ideas on the Weimar Republic. I will show how the American cultural influence was a product of their economic presence in economically and emotionally depressed post World War One Germany. The argument is roughly divided into four parts. The first part will examine the German state of mind directly after the First World War and explain why certain parts of the population were so suspectible to American influences. The second part will deal with the American influence itself, in particular with economic issues and the German perception of the rationalisation of economy, Taylorism and Fordism. The third part will be about the cultural influence of America on Germany, first with the perception of American culture in Germany and then with German culture that has been influenced by the American, focussing on Jazz. The fourth part will show the fate of the Comedian Harmonists as an example. When talking about things like the "German mentality" or general "feelings" in Germany, it should not be implied that those feelings or beliefs were shared by the whole German population. It is clear that a population of more than sixty million people is not a homogenous body. Especially during the time of the Weimar Republic, the German population was highly polarized.

Antigypsyism in the Political Culture of the Federal Republic of Germany:A Parallel with Antisemitism?
by Gilad Margalit
Abstract
This article analyses the recent wave of ethnic hatred directed against Romanies (Gypsies), in the political culture of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). This ethnic hatred is designated here as antigypsyism. Differences and similarities between contemporary antigypsyism, antisemitism, and xenophobia will be discussed, with a preliminary survey of antigypsy patterns, and its various manifestations since 1945. Antigypsyism in the political culture of the FRG was mitigated under the influence of the Allies' reeducation policy during their occupation of Germany, just as revelations of antisemitism had been. This enlightened trend progressively gained power in the FRG after 1945. Nevertheless, hostile assertions and actions directed towards Romanies, as well as statements indicating implicit and explicit "understanding" of the motivation for their persecution under the Nazis were observed. Such statements were found not just among extreme Right groups, or in the private sphere (as was also largely the case with postwar antisemitism), but prevailed on the fringes of mainstream circles as well, at least during the 1950s. Antigypsyism played only a marginal role in the political agenda of the contemporary German extreme Right. It is certainly not comparable in its depth or dimensions to the central and profound role played by antisemitism in the German extreme Right Weltanschauung. Nevertheless, traditional antigypsyism, and especially the Nazi persecution of the Romanies, gave this ethnic hatred a unique character different from general xenophobic feelings. Antigypsyism has borrowed traditional as well as post-Holocaust antisemitic patterns, and, surprisingly, even has a certain amount of antisemitic content. Like antisemitism, antigypsyism was delegitimized in the political culture of the FRG, and contemporary public appearances are restricted to extreme Right circles.

Complex World Of Germany: Cultural Heritage
Switch on Deutschland - complexity and exactness are reflected in its name as well as in its sound like in the mirror. Complexity is a peculiarity of German Culture, too. This country has given a number of prominent people to the world: Goethe and Hitler Dietrich and Bismarck Einstein and Honecker. Militancy and arrogance are mingled with fine intellect and graceful beauty. High technologies get on with adherence to old-time traditions , resolute standing to one's colors - with love of fun holidays , overall devotion to beer - with no less devotion to wine . These points define the unique face of German Culture and make it a broad and rich topic for investigation. Like most countries of the world, Germany is perceived with a set of stereotypes formed regarding its past and present. What kind of people are Aryans? Belligerent and superior, or kind and friendly? Do Germans usually walk around in Lederhosen drinking beer? Is the life of German women really tied to the famous four K's:

    The Program
The UW-Eau Claire program in Wittenberg concentrates on building skills in the German language and exploring German culture and history. Courses are taught at the Institut für deutsche Sprache und Kultur, which is affiliated with the venerable Universität Halle-Wittenberg and housed at the former Leucorea Universität, the very building in which Martin Luther taught philosophy. It's 500 years old and yet very modern!
The program is designed for intermediate level students and features small classes, dynamic instruction, and individual attention. Courses are taught by German faculty from the Institut and by the accompanying UW-Eau Claire professor of German. The program includes excursions to cities such as Berlin, Weimar and Leipzig. You will stay with a host family during the program, giving you the opportunity to apply your classroom learning immediately. Many past students report that the informal learning with their family was as important as their classwork to their academic experience.

      Jews in today's German culture
Since the mid-1980s, Sander Gilman, the Henry R. Luce Professor in Germanic Studies, has spent a great deal of time in Germany and Austria pursuing the work that has made him internationally known in the fields of Germanic studies and psychology. During his numerous visits to those countries, Gilman became aware of an interesting change in contemporary German society the reappearance of a significant Jewish culture. "A large number of 'Third Generation' artists born after the Holocaust writers and filmmakers who identified themselves as Jewish and who wrote about Jewish topics were creating a space for Jewish culture in a country that has changed greatly since World War II," Gilman said. "But it was a phenomenon that no one was recognizing. I was one of the first people to say, 'Look, there is something going on here that is more than one or two people writing about being Jewish.' " Gilman recalls that the initial response to his research was less than positive. "When I first began my work in this area, I was met with a great deal of anxiety and animosity," he said. "Many German Jews still felt that the Jewish cultural component had ended in the country in 1933. And many Germans felt that the whole notion of a new Jewish culture which was consciously evocative of the German past was something that they didn't especially want to deal with. For many years I was literally a voice in the wilderness."
