Manning's Heritage Park and Authentic
German Haus Barn Manning, Iowa 51455 In the 17th and 18th centuries, haus barns (house barns) were a common form of dwelling throughout several areas of Germany, This was especially true in Schleswig-Holstein, a state in the Northwest part of Germany, Many of the Manning area families are descendants of immigrants from that area. As a means of "getting in touch" with our heritage the Manning Heritage Foundation (MHF) began searching for an authentic haus barn in Germany. Two years ago a 300-year-old structure became available near Itzehoe. The owner, Claus Hachmann, needed to remove the structure from his land. Through Dr. Carl Johannson, curator of the Mofsee Open Air Museum, south of Kiel, the MHF was able to locate and seek possession of this building. The Molfsee Museum currently has many examples of German Haus Barns preserved for tourists to view, and luckily for Manning, they already have an example of the style of this barn. They were our advocates to the German government to make it possible for Manning to import this particular building for the purposes of establishing the first German Heritage Museum in the United States. The haus barn is a unique structure that consists of living quarters for not only the family, including bedrooms, sitting, dining and cooking areas, but also areas for housing livestock, farm equipment and feed.

These favorite recipes are being shared by members of the German Embassy in Washington as a Christmas greeting to this site's many visitors. Each recipe has been in the family for years, with many now being passed to the third generation. The treats are quite different from one another, according to family tastes, and use delicious flavors often overlooked in the United States. Some of the ingredients, while common in Germany, may be more difficult to find in the United States. G ermany Online Home: Life: Recipes : Recipe Archive Goose with Apple Stuffing
Roast goose is a delicious, seasonal meal, found in Germany from November to January. In the country's Catholic regions, goose is associated with St. Martin's Day (November 11). Legend has it that one night St. Martin, then a Roman soldier, gave half his cloak to a freezing beggar. Later in his life, when called to be bishop of Tours, Martin became afraid and tried to hide in a goose shed, only to be given away by a noisily protesting gander. These scenes play a part in traditional St. Martin's day celebrations. Reminiscent of Halloween, children march at dusk with lanterns and sing at neighbors' doors for candy. As it gets dark, a warming bonfire is lit in the town square with a visit paid by "St. Martin" to once again offer half his cloak. Local restaurants begin offering goose on this day. Serves 6 to 8 Ingredients: 1 ready-to-cook goose (8 to 10 pounds)
2 cups water
1 small onion, sliced

Central Berlin on a Saturday evening around 9 p.m.: Groups of art fans stroll through the narrow streets, moving from one gallery to the next, taking in just a few than 200 in the capital. Over a glass of sparkling or red wine, art lovers discuss the latest trends, pausing every now and again to study a painting or to greet friends and acquaintances.
Deutsches Theater - from traditional to provocative
If contemporary art leaves you cold, walk on a few hundred metres and go to the theatre. The "Theater am Schiffbauerdamm" is right next to the River Spree, and is renowned for outstanding theatre productions. This is where Max Reinhardt staged the legendary production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 1904 and the "Dreigroschenoper" (Threepenny Opera) by Berthold Brecht, with music by Kurt Weill, premiered in 1928.
A presence on international stage and screen
GGermany has a lot of cultural to offer. More than 450 theatres stage over 2500 different works each year. Goethe's "Faust" continues to be a favourite with audiences, but many modern plays are also staged. Hamburg has made a considerable name for itself in recent years for its musicals. After Cannes and Venice, the Berlin film festival is the most important platform for international cinema in Europe.

vii. PERSIA IN GERMAN LITERATURE. See Supplement. viii. GERMAN CULTURAL INFLUENCE IN PERSIA
German culture was and is very highly appreciated in Persia, but its influence on Persian culture is usually overrated. A lasting influence was mainly exercised on Persians who either attended a German school in Persia, had other personal contacts with Germans, studied in Germany, or worked there.
Schools and universities in Persia . During the early phases of the introduction of modern education in Persia, French was the only European language taught at Persian schools and, in certain cases, even the language used for lessons and examination. In 1932, the German colony in Tehran established a German school, which had to be closed during World War II. In 1955, another German school was founded in cooperation with the German embassy. By 1964, it comprised all elementary and secondary classes and was recognized as a German secondary school abroad. By late 1978 it had 1,500 pupils and was the largest German school abroad. The two schools can hardly have contributed to introducing German culture in Persia, since a high percentage of their students consisted of pupils issuing from mixed German-Persian couples or of Persians who had lived and started school in Germany.
After the cancellation of the cultural agreement and the closing down of the Goethe Institute (q.v.) founded in 1958, which had about one thousand students in 1978, imparting the German language and culture to Persians became for a few years the monopoly of the Austrian Cultural Institute. The new German Language Institute established by the German embassy in spring 1995 has not been allowed to engage in any cultural activity, because, in the wake of the Salman Rushdie controversy, the new cultural agreement concluded between Tehran and Bonn on 29 November 1988 has not yet been put in force.

    Greg Nees
Universit?t Regensburg He starts out with a review of modern German history. Nees then turns his attention to the major German cultural themes: order, insider/outsider perception, clarity of thought and expression, private versus public spheres, friends and acquaintances, rationality, and the German sense of duty and obligation. Through it all runs a historically based theme of insecurity and uncertain national identity, feelings that the atrocities of the Third Reich only served to reinforce. In the next chapter, the author illustrates how these cultural characteristics structure German communication patterns. He notes particularly subtle but significant differences between German and American communication styles and outlines ways to avoid misunderstandings. Germany: Unraveling an Enigma will be welcomed by anyone interested in Germany or German culture. It will be especially valuable for students, managers, and others living in Germany, along with anyone else wishing to understand the dynamics of cross-cultural interaction between Germans and Americans.
