The Program
Since November 9, 1989, when the Berlin Wall was opened, Germany has undergone profound changes. The dissolution of the Eastern Bloc and the subsequent unification of Germany have had far-reaching implications in many areas, ranging from the way Germans perceive themselves and their nation to Germany's role as a member of the European Community and to its international image. To explore the changing cultural landscape of the unified Germany, the NEH Summer Institutes focused on four critical debates currently in the forefront of German public discussion:
  • Present and Past
  • East and West
  • Women and Men
  • Germans and "Foreigners"
Drawing on the rich academic and cultural resources of the Five College Area of western Massachusetts, each Institute provided twenty-five high school teachers the opportunity to work with scholars active in these debates and to study and discuss relevant materials produced in Germany: selected literary texts, film and video, news media, and the internet.
Activities
Conducted entirely in German, the Institute allowed participants to immerse themselves in the German language for four weeks by speaking, hearing, reading, and writing German for over eight hours a day, five days a week. In addition to discussing and writing about their own responses to the lectures and readings, participants will devote part of each week to projects adapting current and authentic materials for classroom use, including the use of new technologies such as the internet. UMass graduate credit and Massachusetts Professional Development Points (PDP's) can be awarded. Previous participants can be contacted to share materials and information with colleagues in their areas.

Your location: Home Pierre Gwa - guitarist: His songs and their sources Written by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Kubik Friday, 19 August 2005
This article is a sequel to my one-hour video/DVD "African Guitar". Audio visual field recordings 1966 – 1993 published by Stefan Grossman’s Guitar Workshop Inc., P.O. Box 802, Sparta, NJ 07871, U.S.A. Although Stefan gave me ample space, no less than 75 pages in the pamphlet, to introduce the seven central and east African historical guitarists seen in the video, Mweda Jean Bosco and Daniel Kachamba among others, there was still not enough space to include some of their song texts! Pierre Gwa is the young man we found on the banks of the Sangha River in the southwestern corner of the Central African Republic in May 1966. One of his pictures is seen on the cover of the video. He was playing an impressive homemade guitar. My colleague and companion on the trip, Maurice Djenda (1948 – 2003) transcribed some of his song texts. These are published here for the first time.

Is German culture against blogging ?
Udo Schroeter comments my interview "blogging means being critical, it means you have to talk about what you think is good and what is bad, so you'll expose yourself in a bad way as far as German culture is concerned. For example, I'm glad that my clients don't read blogs (or even know what blogging is), otherwise I would get some pretty serious fallout - even for simple comments about software platforms and stuff like that! Also important to note: Germany is generally slow when it comes to change (with a few notable exceptions)."
If there are cultural differences, i don't buy that Germany will remain a low blogging Country. I trust this will change soon. Thanks Udo for your comments, I would love to get other perspectives from my German friends on why Germany catches up so slowly ! [apologies again for having said there were no books about blogging in Germany, stupid, I am] Technorati Tags: europe germany June 29, 2005 at 23:34 in

People of Germany Germany consists of people hailing from mixed ethnic backgrounds. The Turkish forms the largest group, while foreign residents make up for nine percent of the population. Besides this, there are also large numbers of refugees from East European Union as well as immigrants from countries like Italy, Spain and Greece. German is the language that is commonly spoken. Arts, Culture and Music of Germany Germany has contributed immensely towards art and culture. However, today German culture remains so merged with that of Europe that it becomes slightly difficult to draw the boundaries. German culture reflects various traces of medieval art and architecture in the form of cathedrals, monasteries, and castles that dot the country. Germany is also known for its love for music and literature. Flag of Germany The flag of Germany consists of three equal horizontal bands - black at the top, red in the middle and gold at the bottom.
Please click here to view the Flag of Germany
Economy of Germany Germany had a flourishing economy, which however, was forced onto a decline curve after the unification of East and West Germany in 1990. It was the differences between the economic systems of the two portions that caused the economy of East Germany to deteriorate. Even today, improving the East Germany's economy amounts to be a costly affair, with annual transfers from west to east working out to roughly $70 billion. This accompanied with the country's ageing population and high rate of unemployment has pushed social security outlays to a level exceeding contributions from workers. In the years 2002 and 2003, the economic growth fell short of 1%. However, corporate restructuring and growing capital markets are laying the foundations to allow Germany to meet the long-term challenges of European economic integration and globalization.

The Amber Room Worth in the excess of 100million US$ and often described as "The Eighth Wonder of The World", the Amber Room is a missing treasure which has fascinated art historians and bounty hunters for generations. It is a room decorated entirely with the light precious stone amber, essentially fossilised tree sap. It was first created in Germany in the 1700s, then was given to Russia before returning to Germany in Nazi times. People have searched for it ever since it disappeared at the end of World War II but to no avail. Many believe that it is cursed, and may have been responsible for the grisly deaths of several people involved with it.

Germany, or the Federal Republic of Germany as it is officially titled, is a parliamentary democracy of about 80 million people. It was created in 1949 at the end of four years of Allied occupation after World War II. In 1990 it was united with East Germany (The German Democratic Republic). The post-unification political system is largely similar to that of pre-unification West Germany. The German Bundestag is the main legislative body. It is currently dominated by the Christian Democratic Union, the Social Democratic Party of Germany, the Free Democratic Party, the Party of Democratic Socialism, and the Greens.

Culture
Unbelievable Multitude First the critical question: What is NOT culture? In the German language, there is a great increase in expressions that include culture: Spare Time Culture, Corporate Culture, Eating Culture, Capital Culture, Everyday Culture, Pop Culture etc. Even the toothbrush has something to do with German culture, as Germans call their toiletry bags "Culture Bags." Let's take a short, cultural trip through time. A slogan of the 1970's was "Culture for Everyone." This concerned among others, the works of Friedrich Schiller and Richard Wagner. In the 1990's, the slogan was changed from "Culture for Everyone" to "Everything is Culture" as a parallel to the postmodern mentality of 'anything goes'. Bruises on green hills "The economy does what works, culture on the other hand, does what is important," was the belief of the German theatre and opera director, August Everding. Is Germany really a great nation of culture? One thing is for sure, the multitude of cultural events in Germany can hardly be beaten. This has one main reason: Federalism. In Germany, the Federal States are in charge of the cultural institutions. This has created an impressive result: There are 240 subsidised theatres, hundreds of symphonic orchestras, thousands of museums and over 25,000 libraries. These cultural opportunities are well appreciated as there are over 91 million people who visit German museums every year. Annually, 20 million go to theatres and operas. Another 3.6 million listen to the great symphonic orchestras.

German Culture
Germans have been the victims of cultural stereotyping since the horrific events that occurred during the Third Reich. Germany is often thought to be a dreary place of all work and no play. Many people perceive Germans to be racist, narrow minded, controlling people who never crack a smile. These perceptions are untrue and unfair. German people are quick to correct these stereotypes that have been bestowed upon them. Germany has a unique, flavorful culture drawn from a rich heritage. More Information:
