Proseminar
The Proseminar, offered each fall semester, provides incoming students with a concise and comparative introduction to critical concepts in the study of German literature and culture. It deals with the past, present (and future) state of Germanistik in Germany and the field's transformation in the United States. The Proseminar also familiarizes students with literary theory, methodologies of close textual analysis, and important institutional aspects of the profession. Literary and Cultural History (German 201 Series)
Our department is committed to the entire range of cultural production which includes not only literature but also non-fictional texts and films from German-speaking countries dating back to the early Middle Ages. Our faculty, which boasts well-known specialists in all periods of German literature, believes that the power of a text depends on the analytical ability of the reader: older texts are no less exciting than contemporary ones if read in new ways. We have therefore devised a set of five period courses that introduces students to the classical works of German literature from the beginnings to the present.

GERMAN LITERATURE. This chequered course, however, renders the grouping of German literature and the task of the historian the easier. The first and simplest classification is that afforded by the various stages of linguistic development. In accordance with the three divisions in the history of the High German language, there is an Old High German, a Middle High German and a New High German or Modern High German literary epoch. It is obvious, however, that the last of these divisions covers too enormous a period of literary history to be regarded as analogous to the first two. The present survey is consequently divided into six main sections: I. The Old High German Period, including the literature of the Old Saxon dialect, from the earliest times to the middle of the 11th century. II. The Middle High German Period, from the middle of the 11th to the middle of the 14th century. III. The Transition Period, from the middle of the I4th century to the Reformation in the 16th century. IV. The Period of Renaissance and Pseudo-classicism, from the end of the 16th century to the middle of the 18th.

Modern German Literature
Christa Wolf "For most of the past decade, contemporary German literature has been under a cloud. After the demise of communism, prominent GDR authors such as Christa Wolf were stigmatized as apologists for the regime. Next to fall from favour were the generation of '68. This was followed up with a wholesale attack on the contemporary literary scene: German writers had lost the art of story-telling, their work was by international standards spineless, feeble stuff. The controversies raging over the past ten years can certainly be said to have been entertaining. Two new groups were proclaimed: the generation of '78 with their rejection of grand political themes and the generation of '89 with their playfully cynical cult of youth. But for all the sparring and jousting - or because of it indeed - German literature is now clearly thriving. Despite the prophets of doom, German writers are being eagerly read. In an American-dominated market they are well able to hold their own - perhaps precisely because they are familiar with it and can put across what they want to communicate.

Mobile German Literature Gets Bad Rap Abroad German book stores are full of foreign titles While the International Literature Festival is under way in Berlin, with up to 120 international writers attending the event; DW- WORLD looks at how contemporary German fiction is fairing abroad.
While foreign books enjoy a good reputation in Germany, the same cannot be said of German literature abroad. A recent study on translation and publishing licenses compiled by the Association of German Publishers and Booksellers shows that on the whole contemporary German fiction is not fairing too well outside the country. The ratio of imported and exported books is 3 to 1, meaning fewer foreign audiences read German authors than vice versa. However, as experts point out, the German book trade has experienced major changes in the last several years.

The revolutionary spirit that animates the culture of the Germans has been alive for at least twelve centuries, far longer than the dramatically fragmented and reshaped political entity known as Germany. German culture has been central to Europe, and it has contributed the transforming spirit of Lutheran religion, the technology of printing as a medium of democracy, the soulfulness of Romantic philosophy, the structure of higher education, and the tradition of liberal socialism to the essential character of modern American life. In this book leading scholars and critics capture the spirit of this culture in some 200 original essays on events in German literary history. Rather than offering a single continuous narrative, the entries focus on a particular literary work, an event in the life of an author, a historical moment, a piece of music, a technological invention, even a theatrical or cinematic premiere. Together they give the reader a surprisingly unified sense of what it is that has allowed Meister Eckhart, Hildegard of Bingen, Luther, Kant, Goethe, Beethoven, Benjamin, Wittgenstein, Jelinek, and Sebald to provoke and enchant their readers. From the earliest magical charms and mythical sagas to the brilliance and desolation of 20th-century fiction, poetry, and film, this illuminating reference book invites readers to experience the full range of German literary culture and to investigate for themselves its disparate and unifying themes.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Thomas Mann (1875-1955) "Regarded as a whole, Mann's career is a striking example of the "repeated puberty" which Goethe thought characteristic of the genius, In technique as well as in thought, he experienced far more daringly than is generally realized. In Buddenbrooks he wrote one of the last of the great "old-fashioned" novels, a patient, thorough tracing of the fortunes of a family." (from Thomas Mann by Henry Hatfield, 1962) Simplicissimus . Mann's first book, DER KLEINE HERR FRIEDMANN, was published in 1898. During these years Mann became immersed in the writings of the philosophers Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche as well as in the music of composer Richard Wagner. In Buddenbrooks, Mann's early masterpiece, he used the technique of the leitmotif , which he adapted from Wagner. Mann had started the book in 1897 as a small story about one member of the family. During the writing process the "protracted finger practice with no ulterior advantages" enlarged into a saga of a wealthy Hanseatic family, which declines from strength to decadence. The last Buddenbrook, the young Hanno, becomes a decadent artist. "A man lives not only his personal life, as an individual, but also, consciously or unconsciously, the life of his epoch and his contemporaries."
